I suspect that the specular lighting was done (or left untouched) to increase readability. The characters and enemies would probably be completely lost in the dark backgrounds otherwise.

no, that's a common thing with baked lightning which applies only to static meshes, leaving dynamic meshes out, with raytracing or lumen that goes away, because dark scenes are lit with more bounces that comes from global illumination and is applied to static and dynamic meshes.

Unreal supports probes that properly sample baked environments and allow dynamic assets to blend correctly between them - this is not something that only lumen / raytracing fixes. From seeing the game, it's clearly an intended effect.

@@Luhiner it's the Gameplay, not nostalgia, it focuses mainly on gameplay(the main reason why most people play games) not forcing an open world for no reason or adding a bunch of unnecessary things to pan out the game, no long tedious cutscenes and slow dragged out segments, those things work in some games, but not all games need it.

Had a lot of fun with this one. It's like a old-school PS3/360 era game. As someone who can't stand open world games anymore, this is exactly what I needed. And it works great on Steam Deck. Got pretty much locked 60fps, with my optimized settings.

Flying Wild Hogs transition to Unreal Engine 4 can definitely be felt and seen in Shadow Warrior 3, and Evil West. I hope they can find their footing with the new tools for the next title.

The quality and performance mode configurations are weird considering that the game runs pretty well on PC. With the help of FSR 2.x (if implemented, considering the game already supports DLSS 2), the consoles can definitely do 1440p/60fps, 4K/30-40fps, or even more.

I tried on an outdated PC, GTX 1660 Super with i5 10400, 16gb ram, Nvme. I thought it was amazingly well optimised, despite the small level design. Don't like it enough to purchase on my ps5 at full rip which I main, but yeah, settings high, FSR at 80% of 4k ran really well. And I really spent time trying to get a sharp image because I'd just platinumed god of war Ragnarok. I've really taken for granted the clarity on ps5 for the money. Surprised that it runs at 1080p on console! I'm still a bit drunk, is it 1080p on all consoles? Can't sit through the vid again.

Works great on SteamDeck too, locked 45fps. Very pretty game if you consider it's AA - the quality is great, the viuals are often beautiful and great animation quality. It's essentially God of War meets Gears of War, where guns are more like skills. It's way more fun than I was expecting. Really great we have a AA market now being this strong.

The quality of the combat, style and visuals revolves around being able to see your character kick the crap out of grotesque monsters. In first person, covering the whole screen with the monster and not seeing anything other than your fists sounds lackluster in this case. The game is awesome in 3rd person. But hey, have fun modding.

I could immediately notice the improper frame pacing in your footage earlier in the game showing off the graphical look. I do think this game looks gorgeous, but improper frame pacing is such a killer problem for me. It really makes me not want to keep playing a game as it makes me feel ill.

Love the combat, the theme and the varied environments. And every enemy is well thought out with unique attacks and style. Just wished it looked sharper in both modes. A sharp 1440p/60 fps would have been perfect.

I don't know if the reviewer player the whole game but i 100% know that around after mission 10 the game suffers heavy fps dips down to low 40s in performance mode on PS5, i recorded various encounters where it's heavy visible and my LG TV has a fps counter, so i have no idea why the video says there are no dips.

Auto HDR is an option on PC especially as windows 11 now has an HDR calibration app that saves an icc profile for HDR. Doesn't xbox series x have auto HDR as well 🤷🏼.

For what this game is, it is really good. A nice old school throwback popcorn shooter form the 360/ps3 era. Straight forward, you have played this before but it's still a lot of fun. Even though the formula is old and you can clearly see where the game was inspired from it's actually really fresh right now in a market oversaturated with games that are sticking to the quota of trying to give you 150 hours for a single playthrough. It's not perfect, and it needs a patch or two to iron out a few things. But overall, an easy 8/10. Little sleeper game this turned out to be.

I'm a little surprised by the 60fps mode being limited to 1080p on Series X and PS5. I'm running it at 4K with all epic settings on PC at over 100fps. Decent rig, but certainly not elite level or anything. The game runs quite similar to the recently released Uncharted Legacy collection at native 4K. And that has a high res 4K 60fps mode on PS5. I'm wondering if a patch could help.

Uncharted Legacy on PS5 is not 4k@60. It runs native 4k@30, 1440p@60 and 1080p@120.

@@D-NastyNoise I'd still expect this title to at least push the same 60fps mode as Uncharted Legacy. They could also add an option to disable motion blur as they have on the PC-side. I get that the PS5/Series X are now on the lower end given the recent NV launch and 13th gen from Intel/New Ryzen from AMD. I just don't quite see where the bottleneck with this title is on console. No RTX stuff (which is where we're seeing huge CPU limitations besides the GPU hit). Fairly small level design, with linear corridors connecting small to mid-sized boxy arenas. Seems like more can be done on the console side to get better performance. Using AMD's upscaling for example.

Yeah I use PC and consoles and for me there's no substitute for smoothness over res. The game itself was pretty good, but spanners like the tool above me judging a game by it's graphics is laughable. Gameplay? Apparently small pee pee energy only cares about how it looks, not how it plays. Having a high end PC doesn't translate to having a personality lol. Kids man, as a dad I gotta say they're embarrassing and shouldn't be allowed on public forums haha.

Could also be a gameplay thing. It's a tps/brawler hybrid, and I'd imagine it would be rather annoying for characters and enemies to be obscured by ultra realistic lighting trickery. Exaggerated rim lighting is a visually pleasing way to make things stand out. This isn't Metro Exodus.

The game wouldn't benefit from a fps mode at all as you're constantly being attacked from all angles and melee is a big part of it. Complaining a 3rd person shooter doesn't let you play in first person is a stupid complaint. Being on PC also has nothing to do with the need for a 1st person mode. What a stupid complaint to have.

You can honestly do whatever you want settings wise. For me it depends, good per object motion blur is usually left on. Camera based motion blur tends to perform pretty awful & is just distracting.

This video was interesting to watch considering that I just saw the GMan Lives review yesterday. I agree more with his video on Evil West though because my tastes tend to mirror his own. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more developers ship at 1080p or 1440p for more consistent frame rate and frame pacing in general. The fetish for 4k never sat well with me because Series X and PS5 still struggle to deliver that performance target while maintaining consistent frame rate. Throw in raytracing and it becomes a clown show of compromises and shortcuts to hit a decent performance metric. Dude, just give me 1440p and AT LEAST a locked 60FPS. If we're talking 120FPS then 1080p is a good compromise for that level of performance. 4K AND raytracing especially on console, at a consistent frame rate is the industry putting the cart before the horse. That is, except for those PC cool kids running a 4090. Master race indeed.

It may sound like an exaggeration or outright lie but it's not. I sold my 4k Tv and bought a 1080p (55 inch) for my ps5. I observed all my games that used to have aliasing including ps4 pro enhanced games don't have them anymore. I actually prefer the look of my ps5 games on the 1080p tv than the former 50 inch 4k tv. I despise any form if upscaling with a passion.

If we contact the devs on Twitter and ask in general for a patch with some upgrade in "resolution" (at least a 1440p) for the Performance mode on PS5/Series X, maybe they will listen, because 1080p is so blurry... And the impossibility to desactivate the "motion blur" is a complete nonesense !

Seriously great game! The combat is an absolute blast. Despite the below-average target resolution it's a must-buy for those who want an old-school, complete, single player experience with no microtransactions. Personally I picked the 30fps mode as I find it perfectly acceptable and it looks pretty decent. Although the 1080p is odd considering the recommended PC specs...

@@vandammage1747 I was gonna say the exact same thing man. Gears 5 on the One X ran like a dream at 60fps, dynamic 4k on a machine that's half as powerful. Same UE4 engine too. Sure, they have a much bigger dev team and access to people at Microsoft to optimise everything as much as possible, but it still doesn't add up. This is probably the worst optimised game I've seen this generation so far, by quite a wide margin.

GOW feels inconsistent with what generation its at, from a production value perspective it is sky high I wont question that but it's heavily reliance on content sensitivity for traversal is very telling.

Even though DF points out the visual performance has issues and the targeted specs themselves were disappointing, I'm very happy that Flying Wild Hog opted to give us the performance and quality options. I'm not thrilled with the recent games not letting us choose. I think they are setting unacceptable standards for "next gen" gaming.

UE4 doesn't provide a built-in way to eliminate this stutter, but that still doesn't excuse developers who ignore the problem and do nothing to fix it. The fact is, it IS possible to eliminate stutters in UE4 games if you just care enough to do so. It took the Sackboy devs a week after the game's launch only! Developers have no one to blame but themselves whenever this issue happens.

I'm a little disappointed at how much flak this game is getting for not being modern or "pushing the boundaries of the medium". It's a throwback game in the mold of a classic xbox 360 action title but with a fresh coat of paint. No online or microtransactions. Personally, I really enjoyed it.

Playing on steam deck of anybody is interested in that..overall satisfied with it but there are some fore sure issues. Have to turn resolution scale up to almost max (200%) and put on low quality or else it looks very blurry. Basically unplayable at lower resolutions for me even with high quality. Then I think I used FSR to balanced. Get about 45 fps but there are absolutely some dips. Not the best but still a decent experience.

I am one of very many that passed on this game once I learned that I need to drop my resolution to 1080p in order to achieve 60fps. Holding out and waiting for them to drop a patch that enables at LEAST 1440p 60fps.

Strange design choices on consoles. This game runs well over 100fps at 1080p and over 60fps at 1440p epic settings on an rx 6700 (rough equivalent to XSX and PS5). Likewise, it runs well above 60fps at 1080p epic settings on an rx 5700 (rough equivalent to XSS). Is there some other hardware limitation that forced the devs to choose such low targets for framerate and resolution?

Yep, It should be able to run at a stable 60fps 1440p on both Series X and PS5, with a touch of tweaking here and there. However, your estimation of the consoles is a touch overly ambitious and a bit out of whack. A Series X performance is roughly between that of a 2080 and 2080 Super. Although it can punch as high as a 3060ti or even the 6700XT on the rare occasion. Whilst a PS5 usually performs in the same ballpark to a 6600XT, 2070 super or 5700XT. The Series S on the other-hand has a perfomance level, roughly midway between a GTX 1660 and RX 590 (The RX 5700 puts out around 40% more performance).

6700XT is a galaxy above the PS/Xbox GPUs… the console-gpus are more a RX5750XTX (if it would exist) kind of GPU.

As someone who doesn't have a powerful rig, A game like this is a blessing to get, on a pc with an old I5 2400, 12gb ddr3 ram and a GTX 1050ti, i'm playing this game at 1080p, custom settings between Ultra, High and medium(with medium being relegated to shadows, Foliage and viewing distance) textures high and everything else on Epic/Ultra, resolution 100%, cas on 0.8, i'm playing this well above 60fps, it often goes above 70fps. And it's a really good game, old school action adventure, hack n slash.

Agreed, the game itself rules. That said, this shows how godawful the console optimisation is. If you can get 60fps on an older setup like that at high settings, the game should have absolutely no issue running at 1440p/60 or higher on the current gen machines. Bit disappointing but oh well.

It could possibly be due to the AMD gpus in the consoles, i've some people say it doesn't play as good on AMD, but that's just hearsay and speculation on my part, since i have no way to test it out, but it does appear that the dev did more to optimize for PC and threw the easiest settings on the consoles. But the could do better.

One of the best 7.5/10 games I've played in some time. Very enjoyable, weighty combat and I would personally love to see FWH's ambitions (and higher budget) come thru in a sequel. But I couldn't help but feel like VISUALLY I was playing a PS4 remaster of a PS3 title that honestly shoulda/coulda turned out a LOT better given the next-gen hardware thats out now. 1440p-60 w/HDR would do WONDERS for this game.

@@akkibajaj705 I feel like the larger BIGGER companies are the lazy ones. Flying Wild Hog's been holding steady in the AA market for some time now. I've often wondered what Evil West COULD be if it had a fraction of the budget of God of War Ragnarok and time for example. Sometimes I dont think the argument is as cut & dry as "game devs are lazy". For AA devs I feel like there's more factors AGAINST them such as time, money, and resources. Im sure making this game with a truncated budget on an older Unreal build is a tough task for anyone. Especially now we're in the post-Covid era. So for me I'll take with (very) good with the bad and rejoice that the key feature of Evil West-THE GAMEPLAY, is the true standout.
