great video. I subscribed. what type of grease did you put on the impeller? Also, whay type of grease do you use on the other moving parts (where the turning connection points, etc, are)?

Hello, do you know what the size of the carburator is in mm? I now have the same engine but then the 5 horse I’ve already deristricted the inlet manifold tot 20mm but just figured I could ask you if you know that There’s even any difference in the 2 carburetors

Thank you for this very usefull video... . I have exactly the same engine . Do you remember how many rounds did you count for fhe High- low regulator screw (at 4:21 )

That new impeller looks like the vanes are not as curved as the old one. The new one also has a brass colored reinforcement for the shaft keyway. Do you remember what year that outboard was? Thanks. Great video.

99% of the impellers are with a brass center sleeve.The new impellers are with straight fins. This motor is from late 80s. Thanks for the good comments!

Great video, I tried to rebuild my carb, but the small tube was split and I couldn't find a replacement. I see you are using some generic yellow tube. How is it called or what is the diameter of it?

Does the carby diaphragm run the idle side of the carby.. my engine won’t idle unless I block half the carby off

The carburetor does not have diaphragm. You closing the choke to keep idle the motor...The carburetor is clogged and need to be cleaned. Please watch the video to see how to do it.

I have learned quite a bit by watching your work. I have a 1999 Evinrude 6RL4EEM 99, 6 hp, 4 stroke. The carb has an accelerator pump on the bottom, which water flows through. Have you ever seen a carb like that? There are no parts available for the accelerator pump, but the carb kit is available. The engine bogs upon acceleration but otherwise starts and runs good. I haven't rebuilt the carb, but took the carb off the motor and took the float bowl off and it's very clean inside. Is there any sense in rebuilding the carb since I can't fix the accelerator pump? Also, the motor uses a very rare fuel pump. No rebuild kit available and a replacement fuel pump is $166.00. It's a good little motor used on a sailboat. When docking, sometimes you need a little rev and that's when the motor bogs and sometimes dies. Not sure what to do. Thanks

I don't have experience with this carburetor. The water flow thru the carburetor is for fuel preheating. Do you have fuel filter? You can try this. Start the motor switch to forward gear and rev the motor. When the motor reach high RPM pull the choke for 1-2 seconds. This is going to create strong vacuum and it may clean the carburetor. You can repeat this several times, but be careful you can flood the motor with fuel too.

@@BoatMotors Thanks for the quick reply. I changed the fuel filter before doing anything else. It didn't make a difference. I have a shop manual and it says this type of fuel pump does not have an internal filter, that's why they put in line filter before the fuel pump. I know it can still have gunk inside, but I really don't want to touch the fuel pump at this time, since I can't get parts. Do you know if my fuel pump 0445078 is interchangeable with any modern fuel pumps? Thanks for the tip on using the choke during revs, I will try that when I get everything back together. I also noticed that someone previously has stripped the drain plug in the float bowl. Bowl is plastic. I can fix this. I suppose it could be leaking air. I checked the needle seat and it's clean. I'll spray carb cleaner as much as I can and reassemble and test. If I still have a problem, I'll take apart the rest of the carb and clean. Thanks again

I'm adjusting the floats because sometimes the needle is not closing. If I don't, the gas level will be very high and the engine will flood.

Is it normal for it to be leaking a little fuel around the float bowl gasket? Might be a dumb question but it does have that little screen on the side for something. Thanks

The carburetor should not leak from the gasket. The fuel level may be high or the gasket may be old and cracked. The small screen is an air jet. No fuel should flow from their unless the outboard is removed from the boat and laid on its side with a full carburetor.

Will my engine not run if the propeller isn't working and the engine runs until it's hot then doesn't start? I just noticed I didn't fix the propeller right and it's not running water thru the tell tale. I am going to replace the water pump with the correct size but wondering if that would effect it from being able to run? If it's hot to the touch?

@@SkinE-Vadee-Veechee If the impeller doesn't pump water to the engine, you risk causing serious damage to the motor. After replacing the impeller, if it still doesn't pump water, you need to identify the problem

When you remove the impeller did you have a missing pieces from the fins? Did you do the the hose test to check for blockages? Did you do lower unit impeller test with the electric drill?

Thanks for the quick reply. I did have missing impeller fins. I did the drill test and the water squirt wasnt that powerfull. But when assumed theres a blockage in the upperpart of the outboard. Where to look?

Water cooling outlet holes come from the engine. Disconnect the hose from the elbow, remove the elbow and start the engine. Hopefully water should spit out the missing fins. Install the elbow and get a new hose and don"t install the end hose restrictor. Another place to look for missing fins is the thermostat. Remove the thermostat and start the engine and let it spit water and then put it back together. I hope this will help.

​@@BoatMotors Hello , i checked the thermostat , and head gasket canals even checked the watercircuut where the water restirictor is connected. Blew everyrhing through. Now it only pumps water for 10 secs and it stops. When its getting hot it stops? It will start pumping after it cooled off.. whats wrong with it? Bad thermostat ?

He did not make the compression test... At your knowledge, what is the compression for the Johnson 8 HP year 1987 ????? --- 75 or 80 or 85 psi, or something else ?????

The compression must be over 80 psi and equal for both cylinders

@@sergenaud731 Don't forget this is a cold test! 80 psi (for cold motor) is lowest pressure for usable motor. When the motor reach the working temperature it will seal and increase the pressure. The oil in the gas will also seal the rings. At working temperature the motor will get around 95 psi. Most of the new motors are losing 25 psi in the first year of usage. The reasons of this is a bad break in period. My recommendation is to buy a brand new outboard motor, take good care of it and use it for a long time.
