Good unboxing/first impressions review. Like you, I've been using the Rage 5s for years. With a decent blade the cuts are clean and accurate. Alas, the sliding table on mine is terrible, with far too much play to be reliable for accurate cuts. I, too, purchased an expensive mitre guide only to discover the slots were too shallow to accept the unit. Oh well, it will fit the replacement. Personally, I'd pay extra for the soft start: it's like a gunshot every time. Although I thought I'd use it, I found the stand just took up too much space in my small workshop, so I ended up just binning it. I only paid £220 for the saw - an absolute bargain - so can't really grumble as it has served me well. If press, I'd have preferred a better throat plate, but that is easily remedied. By far the worst aspect of the saw has to be dust collection. It is like using my very old circular saw; zero dust collection, it just ends up everywhere. I'll be interested to see more on this new upgrade; particularly, the soft start models. Thanks for taking the time to share. 👍
@Smallbarnworkshop5 ай бұрын
Hi. This saw doesn't have soft start - apparently. Compared to the start of the R5 it is very soft. Evolution have put some great work in for this. I said a few time the R5 is too big for many small shops - which is one of the reasons I wheel it outside. The R255 is a much better size. Regards JP

As a professional tradesman. I would never recommend anything from this brand. But cheap buy twice. Much better budget brands or second hand. Thanks David.
@leifbeaton82865 ай бұрын
If I was a professional tradesman like you I would wholeheartedly agree, but as a hobbyist the picture is different. I very much like the Evolution range, and own many of their tools. I had one handheld circular saw burn out on me a few years back on day one, but they replaced it in store without question. Other than that it has been smooth sailing for me - YMMW. In terms of bang-for-buck I think these are compelling tools for the hobbyist. I _clearly_ would make different choices if this was my profession.
@brandonhoffman47125 ай бұрын
I argue as to whether woodworking is really a hobby if you sink this low. At some point it's best to bow out. These tools are a waste of money in my opinion. Unusable for professionals and only serve to provide headaches to those who don't know better. I've heard far too many horror stories and I can visibly see the cheapness in the tools through their website. Their skill saws had no skill put into them whatsoever. I can't beleive the owner of the company considers themselves an engineer. I have no engineering degree and can pick out failure points based off photographs on their site. This whole company needs to go back to school.
@lex5005 ай бұрын
@@brandonhoffman4712 a couple of questions for you if you have a moment! First, what are the failure points you can see on the products right away? Is there any particular one that your experience can pull out on this saw? It would be really valuable to know. Apart from the cheapo plastic of course! I do have the older version of this saw and because it addresses all the problems with that saw it got me excited, but always useful to hear from the very experienced! Bear in mind I am interested from the point of a hobby with a v limited budget, rather than pro.
@brandonhoffman47125 ай бұрын
@lex500 I have heard horror stories of their track saw tracks not being uniform, that you can't even lay the track on your marks to get an accurate cut. I've heard horror stories about their motors crapping out on table saws, tracks saws, and skill saws. I can clearly see that the baseplate on their skill saws are trash and will easily bend as they have 0 lateral reinforcement. As far as this saw in this video goes. I haven't really seen it. It's not listed on their site yet, and after looking into the company as a whole, I'm not interested in watching any video on evolution power tools until they graduate beyond harbor freight quality and attract enough brand recognition off their quality to get me to circle back around for a 2nd opinion. For now it's worse than a rigid vacuum. Which has a motor that runs on plastic bushings as far as I'm aware... I used to kill 1 a year, now I have a festool vacuum. It's been with me for 5 years and is sucking like day 1. It's paid for itself and is now saving me money as well as cleaning my jobs better and keeping my lungs cleaner.

Having not taken the plunge but keeping an eye on the market (because I want a table saw) all the reviews I've looked at point to one or more of the same 2 primary issues: 1 - fence locking out of sqaure , 2 - mitre slots not industry standard. These seem like pretty fundamental and easily avoidable ****-ups to me. Secondary issues are table flatness and dust extraction. I must say from the video it looks like the dust 'extraction' was reasonable even without suction. Evolution are obviously taking that point seriously as the larger saws are showing above and below extraction which is something I don't think I've ever seen on a portable. It's also lighter (despite being bigger-tabled) than the baby DeWalt. That sliding bed is a great touch a la Festool portable. Have Evolution actually managed to nail it on with this saw? I think it may have just gone straight to the top of my very short list. Thank you very much for the review in plain Yorshireman English.

The 1 think I didn't like about the rage5s was the blade bore and the blade guard went in the bin it was less than useless. Having to use bore reducers to put 3rd party blades on it was not the best thing. The rage blades are over priced but these days sextons in the U.K do blades with the 25.4 mm bore although living in France (Post Brexit) means I had to get them sent to family in the u.k and pick them up when visiting. I sold it after 5 yrs of use, I'm not sure if I'll need another table saw as I have retired from furniture making. This new model looks to be much better built I do like the look of it apart from 25.4 mm blade bore.

Anyway I just found it on the evolution website, available on pre order for April 8th delivery BUT £400 for the R255TBL 😂. Easily the best review of this saw I have seen, very pleased that you kept the crown guard on, this is certainly down to the fact that you are NOT a hobbyist and are very aware of the regulations in respect of using circular saws. I am sure the regs in France are very similar to the UK. It seems that what may have been referred to as a budget saw a few years ago Evolution are definitely moving in the right direction with this saw to match the likes of Bosch, Dewalt and Milwaukee etc. There does not seem to be a facility to slide the fence backwards or attach an auxiliary fence for when ripping solid timber as opposed sheet material, I guess it would not be too difficult to modify for this type of operation. The Makita 2704N does have this facility likewise has a rear extension pull out which is very important for cutting lengths, but as you say the more expensive in the range does have this. I really like the sliding table on these saws and think more manufactures should include this feature. I am sure the ‘mitre gauge’ is poor as most are, probably down to the fact that a chop saw is a better option for this process and the manufacturers are aware of this so put little effort into this.

Thanks for the review, although I'm still giving Evolution power tools a pass for now. I had a really rough time with my Rage 5-S: the sliding table tray was welded up so badly out of square it didn't fit, some of the nuts weren't threaded, and the blade was out of parallel from the factory. They replaced the table tray and nuts immediately, and I calibrated the blade to be parallel to the fence (their video tutorial remarks how unlikely it it you'd ever have to do the procedure!). It's decent to use now, but I don't want to entrust my safety to power tools with such poor QA in the future.

The factor blade was pretty poor on my DeWalt though. Regards JP

If so, DeWalt must have dropped the ball big time over trademarks etc ? Regards JP

@Smallbarnworkshop I have an SCA combination machine. However many years ago I bought an evolution mitre saw that was incapable of cutting a true 90, badly made and looser than Katie prices morals. The cheap Chinese table saws are terrible and dangerous as the fence won't remain true and will move during a cut, causing binding/pinching mid cut. It's your body you are risking so crack on. Mybadvise take it back for a refund but you do you!

@riley165 Katie Prices morals 😂 I do like a combo machine. My dad had a Startrite he bought 40 odd years ago. My Evolution was gifted so I definitely won’t be taking it back. Regards JP

@@Smallbarnworkshop I'm saying you should buy a Dewalt instead of that pos.

I've given evolution every possible chance I could give them.....but they consistently disappoint to the point where I now consider them complete rubbish. I had circular saws, a table saw , mitre saws , a multi tool , a zaw zaw and the final nail in the coffin was an utterly ridiculous and useless extendable pole drywall sander. Every single item seemed cheaply manafactured and badly engineered. The motors are constantly sparking and arcing, and they are not in the least bit user friendly. Cheap , tacky plastic is used. The drywall sander neatly got smashed into bits....it was that annoying to use. Got rid of them all and bough better brands ( except for the sander....but a round pad on an extendable pole was still 100 times better).

I agree. I got the Track Saw a few months ago and the 2 sections don't line up straight when butted up to each other so the cut is way off being straight. I need to set a few mm gap on one side and use another straight edge for it to work effectively and cut straight.

@@Eric-DS9 I agree i bought the track saw and the track was cut so roughly that it cut my finger and needed lots of fling and smoothing to make it reasonable. Horrible manufacturing quality

Wtf is this company... I just went to their site. The 1st two tools I saw were clearly trash based on the picture I saw.

Of course they’re cheap tools. They have to cover the cost of sending loads of free units to KZbinrs 😂
@deepmystic67395 ай бұрын
Same, this guy is on the Evolution Pay book otherwise doesn't take pride in his work. These tools don't last, they also have shitty tolerances, sent back a mitre saw that got repaired 3 times on Warranty, after collaboration and some work it would go out of whack and require a repair Had my DeWalt mitre saw since and not even calibrated it once in 2 years and still cutting straight
