The first ever Porsche- P1, built in 1898 was electric. There's no reason why by the 1960s, there couldn't have been an electric "option". Every car maker in the world today can convert anything to electric. They are just stalling.

I would have wanted that motor rotated--- so that the wire connections are not hanging down to snag things. Nice build for sure. The batter is much smaller than I would have expected.... One thing that I wonder, and maybe you guys could test it: So if you are going up a long hill--- is it more efficient to run in a lower gear and keep the RPM's up-- or would it be more efficient to shift into a higher gear and lug the motor down a bit more?? I just wonder if one way saves battery better than the other--- or is it just changing the torque and RPM curves, while still sucking the same battery either way.. ?? If there was a good, long 5 mile hill somewhere that could be ran in each gear and maybe even give the battery full charge each time for consistency. I'm really curious to know the science behind the answer--- I think this would make a good video and pretty easy to make; because I've heard other people ask this same question.

Depends on the motor and the operating point. Typically electric motors are inefficient at high speeds with low torque demand and low speeds with high torque demand.
@calholli
@calholli 3 жыл бұрын
@@felixwe9 Right.. but where is that line drawn? so would 2nd gear be better? or 4th gear? ..... Also, how much would we save if only doing 50mph (in a 65)-- while going up a hill... ect. I just want to fully wrap my brain around the science and all the variables in the different ways that it can be driven-- what is best?

@@calholli fair enough :D Personally I wouldn't want to lug around more batteries, what kinda range/weight increase do you have in mind?
@calholli
@calholli 3 жыл бұрын
@@CasualGearheads idk.. I just thought they could definitely fit some more tesla modules in that front trunk, with a more custom box. I understand why they did it the way they did--- for simplicity: just a square box... and Sure, 100 mile range will be fine 99% of the time.............. but if there was anything: "what else could you ask for" --- it would be more range, for sure.
@CasualGearheads
@CasualGearheads 3 жыл бұрын
@@calholli fair enough, lightweight won't help if you can't make it to some nice driving roads, floor it and make it back. And for pootling around town, doubling the battery weight would do little to hamper performance.
