As an ex-Sunni I never gave much thought to this particular debate, I'd always assumed my side was right(what a coincidence), but reading the hadith which recounts the incident and the "choosing" of Ali, I can understand why the Shia side make the arguments that they make. But I am still ignorant on the subject for the most part. I can only reiterate the saying "why choose to be ambiguous when you should be unequivocally clear", for one simple hadith 15 percent of your flock may have followed the wrong road.

@@KomenCents Well, whatever he said, clearly it wasn't enough to establish it in everyone's mind, unless we want ascribe absolute malice to the early caliphs, which would be actually the Shiaa's main strategy. By confirming his choice multiple times, he would not only have decreased the chances of misunduerstanding, but also given the Shiaa more evidence to support their claim.

The majority of laymen are sheep who just sway with whoever is in power at the moment, thats why Islamic history full of fighting, because Sunnis did not accept the clear cut leadership and made up their own leaders.

I've watched this years ago when I was very into the ex muslim movement (I'm still an ex-muslim atheist, I just don't consume entertainment based around it much. Comedy is my main thing now, it's better for my mind). It was hilarious then and the funny thing is, i came back now because of watching The Ayatollah Khomeini Song sung by NTNON. It's stuck in my head for days now because it's so stupidly good and for whatever reason, my brain remembered Armin and Veedu having a debate about shia vs sunni (or ex-shia vs ex-sunni). NTNON = Not The Nine O'clock News was a legendary comedy sketch show in the 1980s starring Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, Griff Rhys Jones and Pamela Stephenson. The great Billy Connolly by the way played Khomeini in the Ayatollah Khomeini Song sketch. Give it a watch if you haven't. It was a brilliant show way ahead of it's time. The humor was free range grass fed. There's nothing they didn't make fun of.

with due respect.on that note, I feel that you need TO know more about the matter lol.... In fact Ali and many other companions who remained loyal to the last will of prophet of ALLAH swt denied to pay allegiance to abu baker...that's the reason why umer attacked the house of Ali and injured Fatima daughter of Prophet Muhammad saw who consequently died..Ali was dragged to abu baker and warned him of consequences if he didn't pay allegiance...ALI didn't pay allegiance for six months after the abu baker grabbed the power. he withdrew from his right to lead the ummah only when he saw munafiqeen and non muslims attacking Islam and muslims harder then what they used to do during prophet's time. the divine leader is supposed to be the protector of the word of ALLAH and that's what Ali did....
