I am 10 days out from total left knee replacement.l have quad damage due to a prior injury.To activate my left quads are extremely painful and extremely stiff.Your approaches and extensive vocabulary speak to my current situation,thank you.

And here I am with the opposite problem. I have a history of muscle spasms, especially in the right leg. Just had my right knee done February 20 and post-surgery the quad and IT band were “activated” (as I call it). Hyperactive to the point of spasms which limited my sleep to about 20 minutes at a time. Found some articles including one from NIH which came with recommended medications. Those have been helping and I’m now up to an hour and a half of sleep at a time before the spasms start. It’s been rough.

Despite weeks of quad strengthening exercises prior to RTKR on 06/13/24 it was 15 days post op before I could lift my operated leg even 1 inch off the bed. Makes for an even tougher start to the rehab process.

After 5 months of knee arthroscopy, I still cannot lift up my right leg at all when straightened. I have been doing Gym exercises and stationary bike but still can’t activate it at all. I used TENS-EMS as well, nothing works. Neither can I straighten my leg when bend. Thus I can’t use stairs at all especially coming down the stairs, cos I can’t reach the lower stairs. My physiotherapist can’t help me much 😢

My PT noticed my quad isn’t firing when I’m walking but it does when I do my quad exercises. I’m 7 weeks po and getting ready for other knee in few weeks TKR.

I was never informed this would happen when I had my surgery. So when my leg was "dead weight" I paniced thinking they botched my surgery. My surgeon never communicated a single thing to me before my surgery. So when this happened, besides crying I was thrown into panic attacks and depression. I'm 2 months post-op and if the surgeon said 10 words to me before and after surgery I'll be surprised. Even after surgery it took 3 weeks for the surgical assistant to tell me to start out patient PT. No one told me what to do when I was discharged. This whole thing was/is a nightmare for me. I most times wish I never had the surgery to begin with.

This is very upsetting to hear. No one should ever feel this way! I am so sorry you had to go through this. The knee replacement surgery can be the best thing you’ve ever done to get your life back. You just need the right guidance!

@@dr.samanthasmith Thank you. When I hear of people talking about how their Dr was involved in their pre and post surgery care I'm happy for them, but sad and angry at how my surgeon was/is with me. I've joined your FB page to connect with others that may be able to help me, help myself get through this. I am doing PT now 3 times a week. I'm not sure if I over did it or I did something wrong but this past week has been very painful. BOTH knees are now in pain. To add some icing to my already horrible experience, my lower back is giving me pains that are sometimes worse than the surgery. Getting up to walk is nearly unbearable. I've sent an email to my therapist and one to the surgical assistant asking for help. Then I found your page here and thought maybe, just maybe someone who specializes in this field might be able to shed some light on this dark time for me.

I have a question no one seems to be able to answer. I am 4 months out from surgery and I still have pain and swelling behind my knee. What muscle is on the backside of my knee and what exercise can I do to work on it?
@dr.samanthasmith7 ай бұрын
Swelling is very normal for 6-9 months. Unfortunately I’m unable to make exercise recommendations without a full evaluation.
@blitz_zen7 ай бұрын
I am 7 months out from my second knee. I still have swelling but it is slowly going away. My job requires I stand all day…wrapping my knee with an ace bandage helps. Walking also helps. Like the doctor says it take 9 months to heal and I bet as you get closer to the 9 month mark you will have less swelling. I had pain behind my knee from what seemed like a bakers cyst. It was just a pocket of fluid (from swelling) that went away with time and also massaging it. Massaging the knee helps. Recovering takes basically a year. It takes time for you body to adjust to the new knee and alignment. :) don’t worry!
