Jay’s “daily eating” video was always one of my favorites. The sheer weariness and contempt in his eyes and voice when he said the eating was the hardest part is so candid. Working out to failure! Repitively hard, but at the same time easy. Eating thousands upon thousands of calories each, and every day? Oh hell no, don't touch me with that. I struggle eating just a thousand! Eating sucks! I mean I am terminally ill, so yeah you can cry me a river as I'm to weak myself, but who cares that is besides the point. Even in my prime I hated eating like 4k a day. Seeing what the elite athletes eat I am like yeah screw that. I think it would make me food adversed having to stuff my gullet so often. So hearing Jay be like, "ugh.. More food." Is nice to hear. I'd be depressed too. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a 2,000 calorie pill? I think so. Fun fact! Studies have shown the best for hydration is actually... (Ashkually) skim milk! Crazy wild I know?! Who would have thought. Than the list went skim, Pedialyte, sports drinks(not Prime), coanut water, watermelon juice, other fresh juices with some bottled, and then water. Turns out your body uses or excretes a lot more than just electrolytes, and water. The metabolism seems to need more macros and micros than we think. Anyway Google if you don't believe me.

16:00 Regarding Cutler's seemingly random approach. I started doing this a couple years ago. I'm not a bodybuilder, just a lifter. I used to track every exercise, every rep. It wore me out. After a while I realized that my ability to recover varied SIGNIFICANTLY week to week due to being 44 years old and a stressful life and thus I stopped tracking. I started listening to my body and how I felt during the sets, between the sets, and during my recovery day(s). That one change TRULY made a massive difference and now I know so much more about getting a proper stimulus and I enjoy my exercises so much more.

I don't buy that. You can't know if you are even building muscle if you are fat. More mass on that gigantic mass will radically decrease your skin quality. You would even hurt your chances to get ready for a show in time. I don't think many elite bodybuilders do/did huge bulks. At least not nearly as often as we seem to think. From what I see they get their bodyfat to healthy levels in the off season to function and train properly. Of course that might mean 30 pounds of fat and so much eating the week after competing, also absorbing a lot of water and getting back on water retaining drugs etc. So they sometimes look obese/bloated with clothes on and due to bad lighting, but they don't really go on stupid bulks.

This aspect of hydration was crucial when I was in the military and moving long distances with a heavy load (i.e., 80 lb loaded rucksacks and water). We would carry sodium packets that we could add to our water consumption which prevented debilitating cramping with the excessive physical exertion that was required. You and Kris Gethin are my two favorite bodybuilding influencers! Love the humor you add to your videos.

That was probably the best sold "in-content-ad" i have ever seen

I used to train at that Gold's on Flamingo in Vegas and Jay was there a lot. Super nice guy and seeing him train was awesome.

Jay Cutler has a lot of training videos on his KZbin channel and with other athletes and he absolutely does 4 sets on squats with 30 seconds of rest. He swears up and down that reps are the key to growth

Adding on to the LMNT ad. I discovered LMNT for a 100km ultra trail as one half of my hydration strategy. Love the taste and salt selection. It was one of the more expensive options but was worth it. Other go to hydration salts that I use are gastrolyte and hydrolyte tablets. They are cheaper and more easily found in pharmacies.

Finally somebody with a larger platform mentions it. Probably once a month we have a highschooler or local college athlete come in with confusion, lethargy, crampy, and sometimes even seizing because they have been chugging water during their 3-4 practices a day and make themselves hyponatremic.

I don’t think people realize how big jay was in his prime. Saw him once his forearm was as big as my leg. Just a monster

To focus on internal cues in the squat I found that turning around and NOT facing a mirror worked wonders for me. My squat became so much better and I could focus more. Just a tip for you folks if you are not already doing it.

When I was learning about body building as a teenager and young man, Jay's statements and workout guides made sense, which shouldn't be surprising, but in an era when everyone was trying to sell junk, he seemed intelligent and reasonable.

Read all the books out there OR hang out with Doc Mike occasionally. Simply the best.

It’s still commonly believed atleast by the majority that you need to train to failure or close to it with something near your max. However there’s another game plan that probably has just as much support this one is less heavy but still intense it’s called volume is king. Plenty of people get jacked without ever trying to max out or risk injury they just use high reps or high sets and frequent workouts.

After about 4-5 years I started training instinctively vs having a written structured program. Worked well for me 22 years ago, and still works well.

I'm glad you finally got around to this critique, I use Jay Cutler's ebooks for my workout schedule and they work better than anything I've tried in the past... FYI I've never tried yours because I can't afford it but hey results speak for themselves... I always enjoy your content.

Jay is awesome on so many levels!🙌 I’m proud to be an affiliate of @cutlernutrition! Awesome supps, workout advice and super nice guy. I give him mad props for still being in phenomenal shape even after retiring from bodybuilding!💪

I like that, even though it was an ad read for a product, Mike makes a point that the powder stuff has extra stuff, but you can honestly just put salt in water if you really need hydration

Even as he does the ad placement, he is generous and accommodating. This or something similar, he said. Thanks, doc.

I've been shifting my focus lately to internal muscle feel. It's crazy how much you can alter a lift with really subtle changes that are basically invisible to an observer.

Jay once came in and trained in my gym when I was in college. I remember watching him and I'll never forget how not intense it was. Nothing like his videos- going through the motions. Was strange

Dude, i would love to see you compare the physiques of every olympia winner and talk about the progression of bodybuilding. i know this is the most insane request ever because of the amount of work it would take, but here we are and i love hearing your opinions of gym culture and workouts so, DO IT!!!

Enjoyed the rehydrating section. I lowered my salt intake temporarily and I was drastically dehydrated even drinking 200 ounces of water. I added the salt back in my diet and I’m rehydrated much more easily.
