Nas was 17/18 in the Pre Illmatic era on a higher degree of lyricism than todays dudes in their 20s. He is a prodigy, a savant, the Golden Child

The original was incorrectly labeled as part of his pre Illmatic demo but it’s really after Illmatic. In the original he raps “Peace to my seed n thanks for her birth, Destiny that’s her name”. His daughter Destiny was born summer of 94, months after Illmatic dropped in April of that year. In 93/93 Nas was not yet a father. And frankly his flow here was more nimble than on Illmatic. He sounds more experienced, more like how he ended up sounding on It Was Written.

@@SyySteezy wrong. His demo didn’t leak til after Illmatic’s release and the only songs on it were I’m A Villain, Once Upon A Time In The Projects, Number One With A Bullet, and Nas Will Prevail (re done as It Ain’t sharks To Tell). Nas wasn’t as sharp in those songs as he was on Illmatic. This song was done after Illmatic and you can here Nas got even better. And his daughter was born by this time. She wasn’t even conceived until towards the end of him completing Illmatic. He did a bunch of unreleased stuff in 95, this song being one of them. I’m an old head and I was around for all of this. I remember the J Live Best of Nas mixtape that had his demo stuff, his 95 stuff and his remixes.

@@williemakeit2346 nah b you tripping. Illmatic was in the streets years before it came out. Everyone knows this. That’s why it only went Gold. Nas says in the new version with Gibbs and Cordae “ This original recording hit the street ’round ’93 Was just a leak, the verse was incomplete, reconstructed the beat So we can fuck up the street” stop fucking cappin

Remember my first time hearing this, like summer, 98, might have been, on a mixtape, I was like 19, and shit was totally different, no KZbin, sounds can, or whatever, when hip hop was, still, pure, when Jordans only dropped once a year, just different colors same silhouette,, I'm honestly glad I lived through that, got to see, both pac and big, drop albums, while alive, when you actually had to be dope to get a deal, or even be mentioned, when lyrics, accounted for something, yes lady's and gents, the golden age of hip hop

1:00 Crazy history behind this line. Ethiopia was the only major African nation to not be conquered by European colonizers. Italy tried in 1895-96 and failed. They tried again, with a war ready force. Ethiopia with Selassie leading defended the last attack by colonizing forces. The idea of Selassie sipping asti spumante after victory(Italian champagne) just always made me proud to hear positive African history.

It would have been cool if he used the beginning vocals from the original (this version) and then came with new vocals at the end like he's talking to his younger self(similar to the concept of "No Tears" from Magic 3). I wish the remix was just him as this record has a lot of history and could have had an "Old Nas vs Young Nas" old head talking to a young buck theme.

Wish they would’ve kept the Easy Mo Bee production.
