Our Hero tries to explain what he finds helpful about the story of Jesus and how atheists can apply the morals of the New Testament to mimic the hero of the story.
How do you view the story of Jesus? In what ways do you find yourself "sleeping"?

My boyfriend and I just came across your channel and can’t wait to binge! I’m an exmo myself and my boyfriend is a nevermo. 😊 I love how well spoken you are and how unbiased this came across. It’s hard navigating life after being a Mormon and listening to this helps so much! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions! 👏🏻🤙🏻

Hands down, you are the most balanced and helpful exmo content creator out there. You consistently put great ideas into concise English words and I’m constantly nodding my head in agreement when I watch your videos. These are ideas I’ve played with in my mind since leaving the church more than ten years ago, and I have taken that long to come to some of these same conclusions. It’s so easy to leave the church and get sucked into some other cult-like ideologies, or run so far to the other end of the spectrum. You find the middle path, and you explain it in a way that is digestible to people. I do and always will recommend your videos to anyone seeking answers to questions like “what now?”

Wow! Thank you so much for saying all of that. I really needed to read this today. (Even though you said it 6 months ago and I somehow missed it).

Thank you for sharing. It's so easy to set yourself up as the underdog armed with truth trying to expose the faults of the church. The righteous mind is a really eye opening book that applies to us all. I also really like "The anatomy of peace". A book that reminds us that sometimes we treat others like objects instead of people.

Wow I really liked that! Especially the cross thing. I like the living in the moment idea of Buddhism but it seems to be so pessimistic about suffering. Where the idea that life is worth the suffering resonates better. The stubborn optimist accepting and making the best of their limits is the best of humanity. Thank you!

That delineation between "is" and "ought" is so crucial and insightful. If religion is a social product of a species needing to band together to survive, then scripture and religious mythology is the moral or ethical code by which the band must operate to work effectively. The trouble comes when that moral code turns rigid. Mormonism (though certainly not just Mormonism) struggles so heavily with interpreting things so literally that everything becomes a contradiction. For me the bottom line is a lot of religious folks could benefit from learning how to approach a text from multiple angles (and learn how to be okay with it). If you only ever read a scriptural story as a literal event, you may miss out on some truly valuable insights. But if you're willing to take a step back, learn about and incorporate historical contexts, treat your religious text as if you might treat one you don't believe in, you can potentially learn a lot from it. Maybe it leads you out of your religion, maybe it just enriches it; either way, I think you really have a lot to gain when you learn to take things less seriously.

when i been listening to Rabies on the way the Tannakh is laid out there are four major ways you can read it first there is the historical context such as David or the destruction of Israel for example. then there is the moral ideas and the understanding of the human condition and there is the spiritual aspect of what as related to you and the interaction with God. the last one is through the messianic prophecies, all these concepts are written all through the text even how each book is placed and reading them in their entreaty helps the reader see which is which. like when you look at the book of judges you are supposed to in a way critic their actions, as this is a book showing that these people created their own morality like in the story of samson. as we know he was given superhuman strength then he became arrogant and went on a rampage, Delia in the story emasculates him and this is seen as a punishment to Samson. all this leads to a concept that no single person should have full control and there should be a Knesset (government) of people who govern the law fairly. this is why the Jewish Tannakh ends with the prophets its a rebuke saying you not been living the law all the burnt offerings and rituals mean nothing as you have not looked after the widow or the poor like you where commanded to and you treat the venerable with contempt you clothed yourself in gold and this is why God strengthen Israel's enemies and sending you into exile. but if you repent and turn away from your evil was and stop worshiping the retches of the world and say sorry and make restitution God will forgive you. in a way i would say within that context its about each individual changing themselves and a person at a time making the world better as you take responsibility for your own actions

I think the parallels drawn maybe compare themes, but they don't answer the question. Was Jesus a real person and the new testament represent an accurate account of who he was? BTW, Tyler didn't use acid it was lye.

The purpose of this video was explicitly to avoid answering that question about Jesus as I think there is value in the story of the atonement no matter who he was. You’ll have to draw your own conclusions there my friend.
