Something tells me that if God exists, He wouldn't pick a guy who deceived people out of their money as a treasure digger, cheated on his wife, believed the racist Mound Builder myth, and received revelation through a magic rock. No offense, Joe.

I would love if fanny Alger kept a detailed diary of her life and it was found someday. Like, it would be an epic miniseries that would make so many members upset. "Joseph did what? With her? And he didn't have a revelation until after? And then he kicked out a bunch of people who confronted him?"

@@randydouglass8872 1) Kirkland bank scandal. Google it. 2) when he took money on something like 15 times doing treasure digging when he used his seerstone in a hat to find them lost treasures only to have the treasure magically move. This is documented in many locations including the gospel topics essays and correspondence with his family and the court documents.

If you understand translating language at all this is a non issue. You have to remember that the book of Mormon has gone through 3-4 different languages before it reached us so there is definitely going to be some "awkwardness of our hands" going on.

So why would God not just make Joseph be able to read "reformed Egyptian"....and just read The Plates???

Why would God write something in reformed Egyptian which literally doesn't exist except when Joseph smith is talking about it? Made up language essentially.

@@Anhero1 but did God have to make Joseph Smith use a rock in a hat to translate when he used the same method to take money in exchange for treasure digging? That was a very weird route since it was a pagan system used commonly to con people. Like, if I did temple work through finding my ancestors on a ouija board, is that cool? Or if I funded a mission by robbing the elderly from their social security checks? Is that kosher now if the end result is cool?

I was always taught that the person doing the engraving can't change mistakes so it was the engraver that made the mistake and not Joseph. Nephi mentions he makes alot of mistakes and wishes he could speak rather than write because his writing is full of mistakes.

Seems like an apologist way of viewing errors. The problem is that the words appeared on the rock to Joseph, according to him. So the words he saw were written.

If the engraver wrote the word chariots and meant something else, that is a bit of a stretch.

This is good evidence of composition on the fly if you’ve already decided the Book of Mormon is not historical for other better reasons. This type of contradictory backtrack of a few words happens in several other places. Pretty interesting. Unfortunately this would never convince a believer of anything. Too many possible scenarios one could imagine. And if you are not bound by what is more likely, than anything goes. 1. The emendation was actually on the plates and he just translated it. 2. He misread it on the stone and the thing about it double checking his work is made up by David Whitmer. 3. It was a inspired composition where just the thoughts and impressions of what the text is was given and he had to come up with the words and just made a slight error 4. It’s not an error at all and there is a deeper meaning that god wanted to convey. You can poke holes in those and then the rebuttal would gone on for as long as you like. Super frustrating. I guess that’s why people in general have realized that the burden of proof is on the one making the claim. 100% proving a negative will drive you to insanity.

Here’s what would have happened if Joseph had really made a mistake: Joseph: “they buried their weapons of peace-” Oliver: “Peace? Don’t you mean weapons of war?” Joseph: “Huh? Oh, yeah, stumbled over my words a bit there, strike that out and write weapons of war.” Oliver: “don’t worry about it, happens all the time, you’ve been dictating 14 pages a day for a month straight after all.” Joseph: “thanks. Anyhoo, moving on, ‘they buried their weapons of war for peace’…”

LOL do better. This is just Mormon fixing an oopsie while transcribing on metal plates the record of Alma. This sort of fix occurs in several places in the BOM. You haven't discovered anything new. Joseph's translation (a phrase at a time, not necessarily one word at a time) simply maintains the correction as Mormon scratched it in the plates. No editing on the fly.

I still don't understand how he'd be able to make all this up though. This man had a 3rd grade education and was unable to read and write.. so how would he be able to articulate something as complex as the book of Mormon.
@ubermormon9611
@ubermormon9611 9 ай бұрын
I don’t think human imagination is the limiting factor here. Also, Joe was raised with two teachers in the family and then joined forces with Sydney Rigdon, another tutor. Schooling wasn’t an issue either.
@Mustardmanor
@Mustardmanor 9 ай бұрын
The book is not all that complex either. Had he written a book which was then verified with archaeological evidence or DNA or something, I'd say "woah. He really was a prophet. His stories align with other evidence" but they don't. The book is written in the same format as a school book published at the same time which uses words like ... And it came to pass. Hyrum smith went to a university to study for a time. Joseph was intelligent and a charmer. Doesn't matter his grade level.
@Anhero1
@Anhero1 9 ай бұрын
Facts. Joseph Smith only had a third grade education and was able to make up and write all that? Also, two people that Joseph Smith worked with to translate it later left the church, but even after leaving the church they always said that the Book of Mormon is *not* fake!
@Mustardmanor

@@Anhero1 Joseph smith had been telling stories about native American tribes for years. This is from his mother's own writing. And yes, no proof that they denied their testimonies of the book of Mormon but David whitmer was very vocal about Joseph smith being a fallen prophet. Martin Harris admitted to his wife that he planned on using the church to make a lot of money. Oliver Cowdery spoke out against polygamy and also spoke about Joseph smith's character quite vocally. Nothing in the book of Mormon fits archaeology, DNA or linguistics. There is no proof of it beyond individual testimonies. It expands on the already believed mound builders myth. Not saying you cannot believe it but one shouldn't act like the book fits everything historically either.
