Sad that he has allowed a Medical situation to incapacitate him to just lying in bed as his quality of life must be terrible and bless the Heart of his Filipino wife Melanie who I'm not sure the UK government will cover her going as they would likely cover him and assess it against his passport. His $500k ($8896 usd) deposit is probably 1/2 of what he needs not counting the prostrate surgery. He definitely should return as life will continue to deteriorate, as he sounds like another Ken as we only hope it isn't too late for him. I only hope the Q crew can help and outreach to those in UK and Ireland embassies and social services in assisting him. Derek & Ai now getting the reputation as Brit expat Savior... And amazed he can live on $711 a month ($40k peso) with no backup plan.. You know I'll chip in just like i did for Ken

40,000 pesos is a good income for Filipinos. I'm not sure what the point would be of going back to the UK. Yes medical is covered, but he needs to survive there while waiting and he has a wife back in PH to support. Many Filipinos have to make this same choice everyday. Medical or food. Many do not get medical treatments to heal properly.

I am married to a Filipina for 25+ years, and did 30+ years in Saudi Arabia. As much as the Philippines remains tempting for low cost of living in comparison to life in the UK, I would never live there if I did not own a house, have medical insurance and a substantial income. Because things can go wrong very quickly! Not just with you, but with your family and all close relatives as they will look to you for help. I would never give up work and "rent" a shack in the Philippines assuming I'm going to live the life of a king!! Because one serious medical incident will wipe you out. I feel sorry for the guy, but medical assistance in the Philippines weighs heavily on people's mind and wallet and I would strongly advise any foreigner to seriously consider that aspect before "upping sticks". Say what you like about the UK, but he would not be living like that here. NHS would sort the leg free of charge, free medication and he would have a decent roof over his head, likely with additional financial benefits. And he is not the only foreigner in the Philippines that has found themselves in this type of situation. There, but for the grace of God, go I 🙏

Entitlement to NHS Hospital Treatment for Non-Resident UK Citizens. UK state pensioners who have lived in the UK for ten continuous years at some point in the past are entitled to ‘treatment the need for which arises during a visit to the UK’ free of charge. Some UK state pensioners living part time in the EEA are fully entitled to free hospital treatment during the period they live here. They must prove they live in the UK for at least six months each year and in another EEA member state for the remainder of the year (& not be registered with a member state). Gov.UK also states if he can prove he has returned to live in the UK he can use the NHS. There is no defined waiting period. He can't afford £6,700 (500,000 pesos) for his operation, so it's unlikely he can afford a plane ticket and place of residence to return to the UK even if he wanted to. But since he apparently has no wish to return to the UK, it's academic anyways. A sad state of affairs, but a life lesson for anyone contemplating such a move.

Especially if some have been to war, some dont have the means to eat healthy, some are just genetics of bad bones, health etc. Instead, have a little compassion. Not everyone can exercise even a little. Yes there are people in their 80s & 90s who are very healthy . Then there are some who just weren’t made that way. I also know that British gov is giving their citizens notice if they need help or medical assistance to any part of the world especially the pensioners. It was a surprised when hubby was about to get his pension, the UK gov was the one who informed Hubby to get in touch with them about his pension. Maybe try to contact UK embassy if he wants to go to UK to arrange the operation. But from our experience, just a simple treatment was very difficult. As a tourist wife of the British, when I want my covid injection, I was sent to different clinic for injection. They do not have enough knowledge about how to treat me. I was denied for Covid injection by several clinics. Not sure if the priority was local, but during that time was pandemic, so even you are refugee or what, everybody should have injection. So what I did, I search the website and found out the answer that no matter what your status was, you are not denied of covid injection. So I made appointment and when I visited the clinic, the receptionist asked my NHS no.which obvious do not have, again wants to refuse me, so what I did, I showed the Gov UK website from my phone stating that nobody is denied access Covid injection, no matter what your status are. When the receptionist saw that, then she let me in to wait for my Covid injection. But of course if other medical problem you have to pay if you are tourist. Even my British Husband cannot easily get simple consultation. With all the waiting and going back and forth, he was pointing to different clinics. Out of frustration, my husband told me that NHS in UK, was no longer the best medical services used to be! So if I am Pond, better get treatment here. My mom had knee replacement at PGH, for about P200k, I think year 2015, some of it shared by Philippine Charity Sweepstakes somebody have to assist you for a fee, the operation was ok, but have to spend a lot of money for follow up check up, transportation, the carers, food, etc. It was long process of recovery. So the patient will really rely from family, so I think the best place for operation is here in the Philippines. That was long time ago. If you are in UK, with that condition, you need family support and of course money. To bring your wife to UK is a difficult option, consider visa, tickets, money. Spouse Visa is not easy. Need to pay visa fee, non refundable if refused, need to pay health insurance for about 12k pounds but it is refundable, bank statement to show you really can afford as a tourist, Just find the reliable hospital and doctor here in the Philippines, that is the best option. Just my opinion from my own experience

This is a very difficult situation and I hope Ian gets help soon. Thank you, Derek & Ai for your compassion. Can I ask how does his monthly pension of 40,000 PHP compare with his neighbours? From what I read in the internet, the average monthly salaries in a city like Cebu are: Retail (17K), Teacher (28K), Policeman & Nurse (30K), Doctor (40K), Surgeon (50K). Can anyone clarify how accurate these figures are?

Our police friends make 60,000 per month. Doctors and surgeons make much more, but still way less than the states. A foreign friend just suffered a bad accident where he had to get his calve surgically reattached. It was a Sunday in a private hospital on a 2 hr procedure, the surgeon's professional fee was 50 000 after a 30% mark up for Sunday service

Derek, Ian won't have an issue going back to the U.K but he will have problems with the health service. The U.K government closed the door on ex pats returning to get immediate health care and services. However, as a pensioner, there may be a caveat for him in terms of getting treatment. His wife may be allowed a visitors visa for 6 months max after which Ian should either arrange care by social services or other means, but his wife will not be allowed to stay further after UNLESS there are very exceptional circumstances. It is not usually granted. If he intends on returning to the Philippines after, there shouldn't be problems.

Retiring in the Philippines and in any country where Healthcare, or hospital and seeing doctors is not free, should be Discouraged. Foreigners should discourage their fellow foreigners and by those who have gone through extremely unfortunate experience of being sick and unable to cover for their recovery. It cannot be stressed enough, that even being aware of this fact, and going ahead anyway to retire in the Philippines and same countries, it is solely On the foreigners alone. It is never on the chosen country of retirement. Unless, you have savings of thousands of dollars to set aside for your medical care, then it might be fine to retire in the Philippines. It is heartbreaking to see foreign expatriates who are in the same conditions as this one. It is also good to be aware that giving money to girlfriends or families of wives is something expats SHOULD NOT EVER START FROM THE BEGINNING, or it might be next to impossible to undo it as always. If girlfriends (or wives) don't want you because you seem stingy, there is the red flag and it is on you to disconnect quickly. No one is going to give you a threat if you don't give money. There are many cases of foreigners blaming the culture or the entire country for their bad experience without acknowledging that they started the problem. They themselves decided to help or give money.

It would be good to have more details because its a big difference if he needs the operation or just a special shoe. In short they accused you of being exploitative. And I was one of those who vocally defended you back then, gave you the benefit of the doubt, argued that your heart was in the right place. Now I'm honestly not sure it is. Yes I'm sure this is how he presented to you given it's so hot and he's clearly not 100 percent right in the head. You didn't make him like this, you didn't ask him to appear in just an adult diaper. BUT you must know how humiliating this is to put out to the world on KZbin. You must no how upsetting it will be for family or friends to see. You could have forcefully pushed him to put on a t shirt and shorts or at least a towel around his waist. And while you'll claim he didn't want that I worry that you were thinking about views, about how much more clicks you'd get putting him on screen this way. Sorry but I can no longer defend you. This IS wrong. This IS exploitative. KZbin is forever you know that. Would YOU want 10's of thousands maybe 100's of thousands to see you in nappies?

When you get to his age and his condition I seriously doubt he cares about how he appears. Also he reached out to him and knew he was coming yet he didn't put on any clothes probably because he is very comfortable that way. You worry about little unimportant things and accuse this good man of exploiting the man for views which is obviously not the case. He is only trying to help someone in a bad situation. Most people wouldn't go that far.

We just have to take one tablet per day for life. The prostate starts growing after you reach 40. Sometimes due to diet it can annoy the prostate. So i avoid caffeine and diary now. Removing the prostate is not that dangerous an operation but they only remove it if its cancer. I know a few guys his age who had their prostate removed and all are fine. Of course his age can go against him.

Great interview Derek and please ignore the negative comments particularly regarding the man being interviewed in an adult diaper , these people obviously are unaware or do not think that there may be a reason for wearing the diaper it could be that the condition of both of his legs would result on it being a very painful exercise not only putting pants on but also visiting the toilet and also removing the pants at night time when going to bed and lets not forget the heat outside underneath that tin roof. I fail to understand why anyone needs to leave any negative comments they should only be positive , we "ALL" veer off the highway called Life and take detours , most end up back on the highway and others get bogged or breakdown of simply run out of fuel and this is where Derek the mechanic comes along and gets you back on the highway. Cheers

For a handle like "Smart Azz" you are the most understanding and precise with the reasoning. It's a production for him to get dressed, it was hot, and his home his choice. But I still bear the responsibility of my oversight as a content creator

@@qadventures the story about the SMART AZZ is that my ex-wife bought me personal car registration plates for my 40th birthday and yes they were SMART AZZ and the nick name has stuck with me for over 25 years now. Thoroughly enjoy your vlogs and not often I feel the need to comment but some of these comments are obviously from people that do so without thought , I am sure that Ian would prefer to be injury free and also to lead a normal life and be dressed appropriately but alas life for some is not full or sweet smelling roses and warm fuzzy feeling in the stomach. I also forgot to praise Ian`s wife and family for supporting him , this cannot be easy for all of them and some would have chosen the easy path and deserted him , so yes respect to them all and I hope Ian can get some help via your channel and I will be following his story. cheers Willie

Thailand is much cheaper compared to the west. Not so sure compared to the Philippines. But medical care would be top notch. As a comparison. I am 77 and live in the Philippines. I do have a fair amount of issues medically. Right now, my shoulder joints are falling apart. I had surgery on the right one in the US. The actual bill was a total of $86,000. But I have medicare and a supplement that covered the unpaid balance. Now the left one gave out and also requires major surgery. I was in the US during June/July. I could not even get an appt with the surgeon that did my right until mid Sept. So left without the surgery. I went to Thailand for a 2nd opinion from what I got here in the Philippines. Also an estimate. The “all in” total cost is estimated at $13,100, My other insurance will cover 75% and I will foot the balance. But you see the difference between $86k on previous surgery v/s and 13.1k in Thailand. So I think it might be a good option for him to keep open to. Just my 2 cents.
