Just a note, the reason that front brakes are ALWAYS stronger in ALL vehicles, even if the front and rear brake discs are identical of size and type, is because as you decelerate, weight shifts towards the front (Thats why a car tips forward as you slow down). Thus the vast majority of the weight of the entire vehicle is put on the front tire, adding friction, friction slows you down. Its not because the front brake disc is larger, its because of physics. Now, on motorcycles they ALSO make the front brake disc larger, for this exact reason, because its by far the most effective location to put all your braking force in. My point is just to correct what he said. Front brake is best because of physics, not BECAUSE the brake disc is larger. But the brake disc is made larger, BECAUSE front braking is best due to physics. Even if you had the largest brake disc in the world on your rear tire, and only used your rear brake, that rear tire would have almost no friction, since all the weight would be on the front. Imagine the difference of braking on tarmac versus ice. Or imagine the rear tire slightly lifting off from the ground as you brake, even if you brake WITH the rear tire. Your rear tire is ice compared to your front, during deceleration. During acceleration, its the opposite, which is why braking INTO turns is so important, it makes sure your front tire wont skid.
@Rhyme9052 жыл бұрын
braking into turns??? rear brake or front? ppl always have diff advice i was told always accelerate through turns never brake or u will fall
@stevenmaschek75542 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify your obscure statements. (Friction is generated by the grip level available). So the misleading statement that friction is generated by extra weight on the front is not true as if you put an extra 200 pounds of weight on the front forks, that would not necessarily cause the bike to slow down without applying brakes, except for the fact that the bike would be unrideable. In Braking the grip/friction only occurs when the brakes are applied, and the laws of physics will try and keep the same velocity/momentum and the brakes are creating an opposite force to slow the tire rotation. the next part of the physics is the weight transfer to the front, which will give extra down force on the road therefore extra grip, therefore can effectively use more brake force before locking up. The back tire with less down force will have a much reduced grip level therefore less effective braking capacity. If you did not have a larger brake at the front you would be unable to have sufficient brake force to be effective, that is why the size and quality of the front brake does significantly effect the ability to brake strongly This is why all Motor bikes and all cars have much bigger braking on the front then on the back, not only because it saves money on the brakes cost but it would actually be dangerous to have the same sized brakes front and rear. Even with ABS to stop the lockups this just reduces the Braking effectiveness so lockups don't occur. As for Braking into corners the reason is that it largely helps to stabilise the Bike, stops the front from being pushed through the corner and allows the rider to setup for the corner and accelerate out again for stability, which also answers the next persons question. This also works same with cars, although is a little more complicated in front and all wheel drive models. Please if you are going to try and explain Physics do it properly!
@stevenmaschek75542 жыл бұрын
@@Rhyme905 you should not brake thru the corner as this can cause issues with grip and stability, as you are creating 2 different kinds of competing forces (Turning and braking), can cause loss of traction

I'll be honest this has been good for me because I was never a motorcycle guy I was always more of a car guy personally. If I ever did look at bikes it was mostly cruisers like harleys & stuff. I was always unsure of the sports bikes like this because of the clips of these bikes going so fast when steering to where the knees are barely an inch from touching the ground. That for as simple as it may sound deterred me away from these for most of my life. So this has been good for me because even though I've thought about learning about motorcycles I was never sure of myself if whether or not I'd be able to handle this kind of thing.

What a fantastic tutorial series 👏 this is, 5 stars & hat tip to you sir for putting this together! I've already been through this stuff in my learning process, but man I wish I had seen this before the first time on a bike - incredibly valuable information for any new rider! It was a bit easier for me to learn to ride a bike due to already having clutch work from riding 4 wheelers & manual transmission cars & trucks - yet I still picked up some valuable tips from this series, especially episode 5. Admittedly traffic & intersections intimidated the shit out of me & I avoided them if I could, until I felt confident enough to be there. Some advice - don't be a jackhole & try stuff you're not ready for, this is not a video game, there is no "reset" button when you eff up... Get home to your family - don't commit accidental suicide or land in hospital bed because you were to cool to be bothered with the basics. Chase ive just watched some of episode 2 and 3 and was very stunned that the instructions given in the video took 2 x 20 minutes video to explain and how that could make for content. Then i thought of something. Is it a general thing that you dont have lessons at a drive/riding school to get your licens? In that case I completely get it, you are basically the youtube version of driver licens schools in europe. Where you have theoretical lessons and multiple choice tests you have to pass - for 4-6 weeks - also in those 6 weeks 3-4 times a week an hour of riding with your schools instructor in a car behind 3-5 licens takers. There is a "MC Kindergarten" before we are allowed on the streets - where you learn emergency braking, clutchwork, slallom tracks, wet surface braking and countersteering, riding with a passager working against you and where you want to put the weight. In the end there is a THEORY exam, and a practical exam. Both needs to be passed with minimum threshhold of error to pass. Then and ONLY then you are legally allowed to drive a car or ride a motorcycle on the road.
@Damiv3 жыл бұрын
There is a class you can pay to take in the U.S., but it's optional and most people don't bother. All you have to do is pass a pathetically easy multiple choice test, and do a almost as easy five minute parking lot skills test. Once that's done, you can immediately go out and ride any bike you want no questions asked. I was riding for almost a year before I even bothered going to get my motorcycle license, it's not required to buy a bike.

Hi. Thanks for your videos. I'm a subscriber. I never really looked into it not sure if I've been doing it wrong but I've never been a fan of downshifting or staying in first gear at a stop. Ive been putting it in neutral and letting it roll to the stop in neutral. So like if I'm going like 60 MPH in 4th gear I don't down the shift to 3rd and 2nd, then first; I just put it into neutral from 4th and let it roll all the way to the stop sign staying in neutral to a complete stop. Then i put it back into first gear before accelerating again to leave the stop sign. I've always thought that I don't have to hold the clutch the whole time in first gear at a stop, but prefer rolling to a stop in Neutral cuz I've always felt that downshifting wears out the clutch prematurely. I've always thought downshifting and using the clutch in that way was mainly when you're racing so that your maximizing speed but I could be wrong. Would I be okay to just go from 4th gear into neutral and let it roll to the stop rather than downshift and hold the clutch at the stop in first gear ? Thanks. Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.

I've driven manual for years. My scooter is basically automatic. I'm taking motorcycle lessons next week and my biggest question mark is shifting on a motorcycle. I would have liked to see more video of the foot work as that's what I'm most concerned with. I also wanted to know why you had to move the bike to shift all the way down while stopped. On a car I'd usually just stop it in gear then throw into neutral while waiting at the light. I noticed you didn't have to rev match while shifting down? Some of the stuff here just seemed counterintuitive to me to maintain the clutch.

So, legit question: What if you don't have large parking lots that are easily accessible? All the big lots in my area are either too far away for a newbie to get to without trailering (and I don't have a vehicle that will trailer anything easily) or they are gated and locked when they are not being used (don't want any trespass charges). You'd think a church would have open access parking lot. Most around here, if they have more than about 20 paved parking spaces are gated.

That depends on the engine/motorcycle. Some will easily drive in first gear with no throttle or clutch. Most will 'jerk', 'buck', or shudder right at the point of stalling, as they do NOT like being there with no extra fuel added. Some will just stall immediately. That's on a flat.
