An R1 is not an ideal starter bike, but the point of the video is that you can teach anyone to ride anything, as long as you follow the correct process and take it nice and slow. In this first part, we tackle the basic controls, use of the clutch and balancing. In the next video, we will take things a step further and work on improving riding skills such as leaning/turning, gearing, and emergency stops.

My first bike was a 2008 CBR 1000RR( people say, I was crazy), but I loved itlove it(no drops no falls)! I took the Falcon Fury motorcycle class to get my license at the end of July 2021. I just started riding Aug 2021. A couple of friends had Suzuki 600 and 750 and I rode them both. I work for the Yamaha company and I’m buying the 2022 R1 next.

Make sure you find a space where it’s flat. Drag your feet until you go a bit faster, then place your feet on the pegs. Remember, the bike becomes more stable the faster you go. I recommend practicing moving your feet up while parked and bike turned off, so you get an idea where your feet placement is.

@@abslenchar2347 honestly gang from what i been told it’s more about respecting the bike. if you’re scared be scared, that’ll force you to make mistakes that you learn to not make anymore but as far as balance with a bike that heavy i say do squats with something over your shoulders so you can learn where your natural balance is

It’s plainly obvious that you care for your niece. Kudos for your taking the time to walk her through the basics in a safe environment. But…I have to question the choice of an R1 as a ‘beginner’ bike. You seem to know your stuff, doesn’t that give you pause? I can’t ever imagine a bike like that as a forgiving learning tool. Keep an eye on that young lady, keep her safe, long may she run.

Good instructions in this video. The thing with the feet being flat foot when sitting on the bike is dependent on the experience of the rider. Im short, 5'6 actually. However, ive had 3 R1 motorcycles and a KTM superduke R and im on my tip toes on all of them, and im fine. In saying that, my first bike was a ninja 250, then a CBR 400. I was flat foot on those bikes for about one year, or two. Then i moved up. I now love extremely high seat hights, and if a bike is low i actually dont like it, it feels like a cruiser if its low. I prefer the aggressive high seat. Basically what im getting at, being on your tip toes is not necessarily a negative if you have the knowledge and experience. Beautiful looking yamaha R1 by the way. Very neat and tidy 👌

Probably the most likely thing to happen to a beginner is they drop the bike at slow speed. That means a 200kg machine landing on your leg/ankle/foot. £100 on decent boots with support at the ankle could save you months of recovery. Overall great job though, I’ve got an R1 that I love. Stay safe!

Ultimately she needs a smaller bike. It’s super sketchy for her to get on the road for the first time with that much power in her hand. She needs a smaller bike she can grow into and get bored and not respect the power and then move up. It’s the corners and throttle control that leave no room for error on a bike like that.
@MotoMaximus
@MotoMaximus 2 жыл бұрын
Right on. We just did a quick vid to show that you can learn on anything as long as you are taking your time learning fundamentals. She just turned 15, so quite some time before she will be able to hit the road. Another thing to note is that some bikes, like this R1 have adjustable modes. I had her in B mode, which makes the bike run like a 600cc which is way more manageable. Cheers, and be safe out there. 🤙🤙

@@MotoMaximus Well then a happy birthday, and good to know because although a quick leaner and will probably put many miles on her future bike. From the video it’s obvious she is far from road ready yet. It’ll take some time, but already with her throttle control awareness and will to be taught she’ll be out on the road in no time. Shit maybe even a track😄

@MotoMaximus

Could you? Yes The problem is the logistics of getting the bike to where you are at and preferably in a large open lot. The folks that I’ve taught on R6s and R1s - I’ve ridden the bikes to the locations where they could meet and get their first rides in a comfortable, open area. Once they got the basics, it was more of a repeat for their second day, but with some road time in a quiet area with little traffic. 3rd rides in, I would typically ride along with them in regular traffic for support. After that, they were on their own. So, it’s not impossible to lean on a bigger bike, it’s just has to be approached the right way.

Take your time on parking lot clutch work. Get comfortable with turns, acceleration, and more importantly braking. Your forearms will hurt as they adjust to clutch work. Make sure you take breaks. Only go out on roads when it’s quiet and light outside, never during rush hour or in the late hours when the visibility is poor. Gradually increase your comfort with speed, not only on straight lines, but also on curves/turns. If you stall the bike (it will happen) do not feel rushed. Cars can drive around you if needed. Take your time, restart and properly disengage the clutch. Good luck and be safe.

The R1 14b is heavy to move around manually and take of the stand, the newer R1 are so much lighter they feel like old 600s. I'm surprised he taught a new rider on that R1 especially if it was set to A mode a slight twitch of the throttle gives you a thump of acceleration. It took me 5 track days and 2 years to get to grips with mine, straight plane engines are more controllable at lower revs than that cross plane.

I learned the basics on a carburated xjr1200. I bet it's a lot easier on that piss rocket of an r1 on a low power mode.

Putting all good intentions to the side, if one looked up “better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow” in the dictionary, I’m pretty sure there would be a link to this video. Feathering the clutch, not giving it any throttle, not changing gears and putting in a straight line at 3 mph isn’t really riding and probably isn’t teaching you anything, it’s definitely teaching you less than say… belting around on a Yamaha 90cc. But hey: she rode an R1! YEAH!

The reason you start on a smaller bike is because it is harder to gauge your speed on a larger bike. At some point you have to stop. That's where novices get into trouble.
@MotoMaximus
@MotoMaximus 2 жыл бұрын
You can get into as much trouble on a 250 as you can on a 1000. You can hurt yourself equally crashing at 30 or more mph on a 250 vs 1000. The point of this video was to showcase that you can learn on and ride anything, just as long as you take a proper approach, go slow, and have respect for the bike. When it comes to stopping, a novice should always do emergency stop drills, no matter which bike they start on. 🤙🤙

@@MotoMaximus It's not just the power of the vehicle, it's the weight. A 1000cc R1, although light for it's size, is going to weigh far more than a 125. That bike was too tall for her. If she dabs the brakes in a panic while not completely straight, she is most likely going over. In the UK, a novice rider is limited to 125cc and 12bhp. Although you demonstrated it is possible, why take the risk?
@MotoMaximus
@MotoMaximus 2 жыл бұрын
@@yankeedoodledandy11 if it’s too tall, adjust the height.. if it’s too heavy, learn how to manage the weight.. Also just to clarify the video, this will not be her first bike. She’s only 15, so it’s a long time before she can legally ride a bike. The point was to show that you can learn on anything, including a big scary bike. 😃 As for novice riders, I think someone pointed out already that you may be a novice, but be 6’4” and a tiny 250cc bike is simply not going to suit your frame or weight. So “novice” becomes a relative term. There is another video on my channel when I review with a new rider what his experience was because I also taught him on an R1… and he’s doing just fine.

On the 06 R1 do you have to give it gas as you release the clutch or since the bike is so powerful you don’t give it gas as you let it go on a take off ?
@MotoMaximus
@MotoMaximus 2 жыл бұрын
When you are first learning, you do not need to give it gas. It’s the same with any bike, including 250cc. Once the clutch begins to engage, your bike will begin rolling all the way through full engagement.

It should not stall on your 300, if you release it slow enough. It will not do that on a Yamaha R6 and definitely not on an R1.
