You said a lot of Psychiatric hospitals closed down because of advances in medicine, however the real reason is government cutbacks, in a lot of cases they were just closed down and patients and families were left to fend for themselves or they were transferred into the main stream hospitals . It happened all over.

yeah but Psych Hospitals are still used but they the new medicine/medical practices so people still go to them if their mental illness is at extreme like depression so attempts at suicide or self harm

Your absolutely correct, it was all politics and money, I know the young man said advances in meds, that's fine and dandy, but when those people don't take those meds, there lies the problem, the streets of all your big cities are crawling with EDPs whacked out of there minds because they are not on there meds, so it wasn't because of advancement of meds that closed all these Hospitals down, unfortunately this happened all across the country, mental illness for some reason is not looked at like physical illness, its even difficult to get med insurance companies to recognize that mental illness is just as bad as physical illness, and also the states just did not want to pay for these Hos. no longer, trust me these Institutes are still needed, half these Hos. need to be reopened, they sent these poor people out into the streets of America and a lot of the mentally ill just wind up in the penal system of where they will never be helped. so there you have it folks, unfortunately the only ones getting anything out of these institutes are these young urban explorers,

American health care is to put profit before people. Today people are waiting to get care because there are no beds. People with severe mental health crisis are released because of inability to pay or because there is no space for them. Community care center became country jails. Look how more "humane" we've become.

alot of psychiatric centers closed down in the 80's-90's because lack of funding from state. Here in Michigan most state funded psych centers closed up in the late 80's-mid 90's. Patients were simply let go. Its sad cuz some patients had no family and were simply pushed out the door to live on thier own because state funding ended.

After writing a paper for American history in high school around 82 or 83 I found an old, fearful white man scared of change and ultimately progress. My history teacher was impressed I found out and put in my paper he was for open carry of guns until black people including the Black Panthers started showing up with shotguns and rifles to fight police brutality in 1967. I'm white and small town BTW.

Yes took a while for the elevator technicians to get the elevator to work again old high rise building.At the same place happened to encounter a ghost while on patrol as a security guard.Was doing my rounds and it passed me could feel it come to find out a man had passed away in his suite on that floor and it happened next to the suites door.I ran to check on the stair case doors maybe one or both might be open and I just felt a wind tunnel nope.This man who passed away was a very old lawyer and he never wanted to retire and leave this place.It happened between 2am-3am.

The large number of closures was due to lack of funding. The people being treated in these places were, by and large, simply released back into society.

It fascinates me so much. It’s what nightmares are made of. Imagine finding a room with gurneys and old antiquated Electro Shock machines and Lobotomy Ice picks and mallets. There must be a load of lingering souls in that place.

I would speculate the building was erected in the late 1800's to early 1900's, structurally looks intact, but would need a full inspection and restoration from top to bottom to be usable again. Judging by the electricity being left on, definitely just something forgotten by the electric company to kill off, and as that building decays further, definitely going to see it on fire because of that. Nice building though for being based off the Kirkbride designs from back in that era, such a shame to see them get left abandoned and destroyed with fact that they can still be used to house the homeless or continue to be used as something different.

What facility is this? The sounds you hear in places like this tend to usually have to do with air flow. It's a large empty building that probably has cracked windows and small holes in the walls, flooring and ceiling. It Echos throughout the building and bounces of objects creating strange noises. There is also bums/junkies... when I did some exploration in kings park and pilgrim in my younger years we encountered quite a bit of bums living everywhere including the tunnels. You need to be ready to protect yourself at any moment as they tend to get violent. I am curious as to what this building once was. Where is it located?? Enjoy your exploring! Be safe!

If I am correct. Most places closed down to a lack of governmental funding over medical advancements. Although, the government could be giving that excuse though. I just know that the psyciatric hospital in Weston Wv closed due to governmental cut backs.

Oh yes, they definitely separate the boys and girls. Too much to be held accountable for when allowing them to cohabitate. There are separate wards for males and females. Sometimes even in separate buildings, depending on the hospital.

Love places like this. So much history. You can't but think about the poor soles who once stayed there and what their lives must have been like. We have a couple very old abandon buildings in our small city that I have strong feelings about and would love to explore. If I was younger maybe , lol! Actually my son when he was younger (without my knowledge) did explore one that was near our home (was with who I thought was a responsible adult) and told me quite a bit about it. Of course it was after he was older and I couldn't ground him anymore, lol! I don't know why it is still standing, my dad actually worked there as a teenager. This place is OLD af! The other is a Foundry that I believe is still there and was on my Grandmothers street right across from her house. We used to go in it a little ways as kids until the workers shooed us out. The men would be all covered in black soot.

Okay, when you walked through the lounge and looked out the window, I could have sworn I heard people, like staff members talking in the background. I also heard what sounded like a distant male voice say “hello”. That was a few seconds into the video, as you two were talking about the lights. It wasn’t your friend, cause it was a male voice and it sounded to be coming down from the other end of the corridor. Those pigeons freaked me out a bit there! Not to mention your friend saying “check out that room” made me jump cause I had no idea you had someone else with you! 😂 M

Yea, that did kinda sound like a man screaming. Could it have been a worker from next door pulling a prank? President Reagan shut down the Psych Hospitals, and that let loads of patients out that needed supervision with their meds and care. Big. mistake.

Most of these psychiatric hospitals closed down in the '90s because of advancement in medicine,which is all well and good but these former patients are not monitored and either refuse or forget to take their meds and become a danger to society.. Yep,that's really messed up..👿

Still haven't figured out why all these "urban explorers" don't wear ventilators/masks and gloves. You know these old places could very well have lead paint dust and asbestos dust floating around, or even just something as simple as a sharp object in some some expected place where you're putting your hands? You're just asking for it by going in completely unprepared.

Here in Florida in a city called belle glade, there's an abandon hospital which I was born there back in 1999. They say patients died there. Y'all should come check that out.👌🏼 I'm a new subscriber by the way.
