Abandoned 1800's Collapsing Asylum - Padded Rooms and Electroshock Machines

Today we visit one of the largest complexes I've been too. This asylum has two portions of buildings, one set that has been used recently as abandoned in the 90's and the other portion that was abandoned in the 60's. The first hospital building we visit you'll see alot of natural decay, padded rooms and scary hallways. The second half is way more peaceful in the sense of history you can just see when you are there. The hallways are brutal/ non existent and there was many times my team and I had scary moments. I work in a State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, as a Psychiatric Technician. Our building was opened in 1954. As I walk through the halls daily, I think about what it will look like when it is abandoned. It’s crazy how outdated it is already. They used to do electroshock therapy and lobotomy’s there, but they don’t anymore. To get to the pharmacy you have to walk through a very small autopsy room. We still have a working morgue in the basement. Our hospital was built to be self sustaining in the event of a disaster. I love your videos, and would love to explore abandoned places some day. Keep up the excellent work!!

@@justaguy798 They still use electric shock in Mental Wards for certain cases. Severe depression is known to be eased, among a few other things. The thing is, many men, women and children were dropped off in these places who never should have been there, mostly because family decided they were inconveniences. However, still, many were put there, because there was no other hope for them.

Patients are still being treated unjustly. Most of the nurses don't give a shit. It's sad. I especially feel bad for people with autism and down's syndrome.

FYI prior to more modern times the old psychiatric hospitals were used to warehouse not only psych patients, but the elderly and infirm, and people who had disabilities of any kind, whether they were born with them or following disabling accidents or illness. Very nice explore.

The turquoise tub and chair are for giving baths to patients. They more than likely had treatment rooms rather than surgery. They probably did electroshock therapy in those rooms. You are respectful of the people who had to be there. You need to wear a mask in these places to protect your respiratory tract from mold and asbestos.

I did see a mask however really vood advice as so many of these you tube explorers take very few safety precautions. They obviously aren't thinking of the long-term affects of the peeling paint that for sure is full of lead, as well as the asbestos, mold spores, etc. These are all serious health hazards that will eventually catch up with them and they will look back and wished they'd used proper precautions.

I previously spent 13 years working in an old Victorian Asylum in England, it has now been demolished to make way for a modern building. The treatments back then were brutal, we have barely moved on even today; unless you accept chemical cosh in place of a strait jacket.

1:08 The Hudson River State Hospital, is a former New York state psychiatric hospital which operated from 1873 until its closure in the early 2000s. The campus is notable for its main building, known as a "Kirkbride," which has been designated a National Historic Landmark due to its exemplary High Victorian Gothic architecture, the first use of that style for an American institutional building. It is located on US 9 on the Poughkeepsie-Hyde Park town line. Frederick Clarke Withers designed the hospital's buildings in 1867. Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted designed the grounds. It was intended to be completed quickly, but went far over its original schedule and budget. The hospital opened on October 18, 1871 as the Hudson River State Hospital for the Insane[4] and admitted its first 40 patients. Construction, however, was far from over and would continue for another 25 years. A century later, it was slowly closed down as psychiatric treatment had changed enough that large hospitals were no longer needed, and its services had been served by the nearby Hudson River Psychiatric Center until that facility's closure in January 2012. The campus was closed and abandoned in 2003 and since then has fallen into a state of disrepair. Authorities struggle with the risk of arson and vandals after suspicion of an intentionally set fire. The male bedding ward, south of the main building, was critically damaged in a 2007 fire caused by lightning. The property was sold to an unnamed buyer in November 2013.

I love that nostalgia color, Medical Mint. It reminds me of our kitchen in the early 60s! My mother-in-law still had that mint colored refrigerator in the mid 80s! You know, it was made back when things were made to last. Like those old Singer Sewing Machines in this video! In the room he scaled to get to... I cringed when I realized he'd gotten over to it. If only those sewing machines could be rescued!

I got the feeling that these patients weren’t deliberately mistreated by the standards of the time, but that doesn’t make it less scary. The charts and manuals here and there seems to indicate they were trying to help them. I would love to get my hands on those journals! Great video.

I subscribed and turned alerts on. I like how you....unlike SO many other urban explorers actually interacted with magazines and papers. Getting the dates and just reading a bit/ flipping through the pages. I always found urban exploitation very exciting. Also a bit sad. All the lives lost in this massive building. I imagine it was one heck of an impressive sight when it first opened. Can you imagine how excited the Nurses/pw's/doctors would have been to go working in this giant mental hospital? How many lives were affected by its opening and then by its closing. It is such a shame such beautiful architecture goes to waste. Thanks for sharing this video. I therowly enjoy it.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. Very well done. Probably one of the best I've seen. It's awesome you take the time to show dates of magazines, equipment, etc. Slow and steady camera movement is always appreciated. My Mother had Electrical Shock Therapy back in the 70's after a nervous breakdown. We went to visit her and she didn't know who we were. E. S. T. literally erased her memory from most of her past. Unfortunately, overtime those tramatic memories did return, probably because she returned back to the same unhealthy, dysfunctional, abusive environment. Using EST for her was a very painful, unnecessary and disfunctional device, as far as long-term trauma treatment therapy. It is so much better for the mental health community today than it was back in the day, when so many patients were horribly abused and mistreated at no fault of their own. I can't even imagine what went on behind these walls. The outdated books and equipment give us a reasonable clue. Great job!!!!!

Anyone interested in the history of mental illness and treatment might want to have a look at the television series by Jonathan Miller called "Madness." (you can find it on youtube, 6 episodes I think, first produced in 1991). In the last century the use of drugs was increased, in part to minimize the use of restraints, which policy we see in the policy statement shown in the video here. This is some dangerous stuff wandering around these collapsing buildings. You and your friends stay safe. Interesting video, thanks.

hey Bro, you're in my hometown, i know exactly where you are, you're lucky you got in there, a lot has happened in the last year on that property since you filmed it, it's very heavily guarded now,, the new owners finally got their grant and are now starting to redevelop the place, they've taken down a lot of the pine trees out on the main road and are slowly demolishing a lot of the older buildings that are too far gone, a few months ago,too somebody set fire to one of the main buildings and pretty much wrecked it, but they still plan on developing it for commercial and residential use, it's going to take a couple years but its supposed to be decent when its done

I love how you do the videos with such respect. I would spend more time looking at the security of the windows bc most of these people were held against their wills. The fenced in porches are the only way some patients got any fresh air. The wire around the porches was to prevent jumping and escape. Sad isn't it how they must have longed for freedom or someone to help them. Electroconvulsive treatments are used today only under general anesthesia. I love what you do. Thank you so much. I was there 2X back in 2006 and the Kirkbride Building was a mess even back then. We entered thru a basement window and I realized that the floor above my head was resting merely on the pipes. Stairwells were a certain guarantee but a lot of hallway floors were pancaking down into the basement. We did make it up to one or two of the towers which were considered CLUBHOUSES and if you made it up there, you signed your name with everybody else's. The old brick tunnels were total dope. Videos weren't too common back then, but I took 100's of pics!

Its so sad how these people were treated. I worked (housekeeping) in a hospital that had a Psychiatric wing. I always felt sad for the patients in that wing. Most of them were just put there as lab rats. It eventually got shut down. There use to be a room with a restraining chair too. I only had to clean that room a couple times. But I hated that room. gave me the creeps.

Carrier Clinic in my state is one the first hospitals that treated people & they were able to get meds to help them they were a university hospital. They advocated to have them in society!. Been around since the early 1900”s.
