I'm another kiwi with connections to Shetland so happy to come across your video well done! Just by reading about your family tree can give you a real idea of how life was life. my 4x great grandmother died by falling off a cliff and there were anlot of men lost at sea sailing back from Foula and Papa Stour. Beautiful place but it would've been so hard especially back then.

No trees means no birds.....except for seagulls. Not sure I could cope without birds... So happy your family got to go on this trip and look for your relatives. I plan to go to Shetland some day and do the same thing, but I will be traveling alone.

Very well done video. Part of my family comes from the Shetlands as well and was so interested to see the crofts and how the people lived, thanks for the time you took to share that with us. Hope you found more information on your family in the last few years.

Sorry, I mean family history being from Shetland, not actually being from there personally 😂

I'm not too sure how many were from Shetland but in general there were a lot of Scottish immigrants particularly to Otago and Southland. Dunedin is well known for it's Scottish heritage which is where im from. Half my family's Scottish with a 3x great grandmother from Shetland :)

@calros3 I think you will find like I did ,through the generations it seemed to change there were many cross overs with families though the generations (Unst was a small place after all!) example 1700 Andrews,1750 Andrewson,1800 Andrewton - I may have the order wrong as I don't have my tree handy (Sutherland) but there were several families who seemed to have changed in a similar format (was there some reason? - it seemed a common theme) , I'd bet there are Sanders, Sanderson & Sandertons over the generations

Hi John, I wonder if we are related way back. I checked the Bayanne website and possibly found your John William Sandison. It says emigrated to BC with wife Jesse Goodland. Is that your family? Have you done dna? Regards, Kathy
