I use 5 Folders - 4 linked to buses: Drums, Bass, Instruments, Melody. They, along with the send effects, go to a Mix Bus. ”Outside” of the Mix Bus, I have a folder of reference tracks that’s muted. When I want to listen to a reference track to compare my mix to, I solo it back and forth. This way, I can quickly compare my ”finalized” mix to any dry/unaffected reference track. Neat.
@arijitduttaofficial2 жыл бұрын
A Folder track is really useful. But sometimes it cannot collapse/expand all channels in the console even if the linking is enabled. This can happen when a folder track contains some midi instrument track with multiple outputs. For example, consider the following scenario: 1. There is one midi instrument (e.g. Impact etc.) 2. There are 2 midi tracks where the midi tracks are placed in a folder track and the folder bus channel is added. 3. The instrument is set to have 3 output channels in the console. Now collapsing of the folder track does not collapse all 3 channels in the console even if the linking is enabled.

Love this feature. After I came over to Studio One in 2017, I was used to folders for organization but never had these kinds of options. My "scratchpad" template has a setup similar to yours with the tracks in folders that are busses (though mine are floated to the right of each group of tracks and I don't have the color following since I like my busses a darker shade of the same color the tracks are). S1 has so many cool features like this that are lurking around under the covers and so fun to find and then find uses for. Another one: you can create nested folders - like for when you want to have 20 tracks of backup vocals and collapse those while still leaving your lead tracks exposed and still treating them all the same (or different). So many options to explore! And one more: Also cool that you can choose which "things" are done to the group, like fader, pan, edits, etc. Thanks for another good one, Joe.

Last piece I was working on is when I discovered and started using folders. However, I was merely using them to keep orchestral sections or similar instruments together for the sake of showing/hiding the sections. I had no idea about this easy-bussing option. I needed this during last mix but chose to do it the hard way...or, the long way. Your example is much better. I also appreciate your demonstration of how to group within folders and why. Actually, I like all of your demos. Gobs better than the manual! Thanks, Joe!

The only way I use StudioOne is with Folder tracks to busses. They are defined in my mix templates and I can never imagine using StudioOne any other way. I even nest folders and groups. For example, within my drum folder/group I nest a folder/group for my kick drums, my snares, toms, OHs, etc. for me this makes mixing and work flows as simple as possible. It basically mimics what i would do in live mixing. I add VCAs if I need to automate dissimilar groups of tracks/busses. My template also includes 6 delay effects channels which are busses and not FX returns. This is so I can send from my delay returns to reverb FX returns. As with my tracks, my delays and reverbs are within respective folders/groups.

Folder are super usefull to me, I use EZDrummer and separate all the tracks so, even with midi, I manage to have about 10 tracks for 1 instrument. So with folders I can easily hide them when working on something else. Folder are super useful also if you have a color per instrument, but you also want to quickly visually see the different tracks of one instrument, here I make my guitar folder blue, but the tracks in it each have a separate tone of blue. When I close the folder it's the blue guitar folder, but when I want to work on that I can quickly see each different guitar.

it may do too much. For instance it also groups tracks which you may or may not want. But you could edit that out of the macro. Also it calls the folder "guitars" by default and you may want that to be more generic.

Joe, it's August 2022. I have Studio One 5 Pro version 5.5.2, and I don't see the wrench controls you see in this example. I have Selection, Editing, Visibility, and Audio. But the Visibility controls don't include a "Link expansion and visibility of fold tracks" option. Maybe this feature went away with 5.5.2? Anyway, all the options look pretty different from the ones on your screen at 4:10. I might want to start using folders, but I'm off to a blazing stop.
