They are not literally brothers :D It's just a thing... If you join the Ramones you get "Ramone" as a "artist surname", so to speak, haha!

Love this reaction. The Ramones formed in 1974. They were unhappy seeing rock had become mellow with 20-minute songs, and long guitar solos. They wanted to bring back the fun into rock, with the same fast, catchy 2-minute songs they grew up with. "Sheena" is a surfer-rock sound, and it captures the fun they were looking to put back into music. "Ramone" was a stage name, and none of the band were related. Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman), Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), and Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin) were friends from Forest Hills, Queens. Their friend Tom Erdelyi (Tommy Ramone) convinced them to form a band. Through 1974 and 1975, the Ramones had become an underground sensation in the New York area and a few other US cities where they'd toured. Then they went to the UK and debuted there on July 4, 1976 in front of an audience which was made up of a 'who's who' of the British punk scene which was to follow, such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash. The Ramones inspired more bands than anyone except arguably the Beatles. People would see that songs could be fun, fast, and simple - and they didn't need to be master musicians to perform, just good enough. Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee were largely dysfunctional as individuals, but together they changed the future of music. Bands like U2, Green Day, Metallica, and hundreds of others point to the Ramones as influences. If you want to do a deep-dive, you could spend an entire week just looking at the Ramones, from "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Rockaway Beach" to "Something to Believe In" and "I Wanna be Sedated" to "Pet Semetary" and "Censorshit". When it comes to punk rock, they truly were the godfathers of the genre, and one segment isn't anywhere near enough to get a feel for them.

Well said! I completely agree, especially that one segment is not enough.

Man im from Sweden and i grew up on this i played in both punkbands and metal band. I gotta say that pretty much every heavy metal band or rock band from Sweden or heck the world listened to this. Keep that in mind they are as groundbreaking as Elvis or Johnny Cash

Malcolm Maclaren saw the Ramones in a concert, got inspired to do something similar, rounded up some street kids (punks) that hung out in front of his store, called it Punk Rock and the Sex Pistols were born

Great reaction! As others have mentioned, they weren't actual brothers - those are stage names. T asked what was going on in the UK at the time: good starting points are the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and the Damned. Also because I'm Canadian I've got to name drop The Viletones from Toronto who were also active in 76 and 77. Favorite bands? Well that's gonna take a while to answer, but here's some highlights. Proto-punk: The Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Death. "classic" punk(?): The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Ramones, The Damned, The Viletones, Dead Boys, Fear. Anarcho-punk: Crass, Subhumans, Chumbawamba (the really early stuff, way before Tubthumping). LA Hardcore: Adolescents, The Germs, Circle Jerks. NYC Hardcore: Sick Of It All (who also feature KRS-One doing an intro on an album), Agnostic Front, Warzone, the first Beastie Boys album. Boston Hardcore: Slapshot, Jerry's Kids, Gang Green DC Hardcore: Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Youth Brigade Canadian Hardcore/Street Punk: Dayglo Abortions, Dirty Bird, Bunchof*ingoofs (aka BFGs) Melodic/Post-Punk: SNFU, Snuff, NOFX, Bad Religion Ska-punk: Operation Ivy, Against All Authority, Choking Victim/Leftover Crack. I literally could go on and on..

I’m surely repeating someone else here, but it’s important to say… in ‘76, bands in England completely changed their sounds when the Ramones record made it’s way over! The Sex Pisols and The Clash were the first to adopt this new vibe

And all without Johnny ever bothering with (or learning) a single upstroke! The Ramones (all 37 brothers of them...) were the perfect solution to the elitist pretention of 70s glam rock instrumentalists for whom difficulty seemed to take precedence over enjoyability. They reminded audiences that music is suppose to be fun by reviving and updating 60s garage rock built around simple, chunky and fast three chord progressions and easy to chant choruses, then added heavily layered chainsaw distortion, rebooted the preppy mod look through a dystopian mirror and saved rock and roll while making it all look so easy that everyone wanted to try.

Man, you're doing an excellent job! Keep it up. I've been digging into your videos since last night and I have to say you're reactions and comments are very cool. You've got a fan from Rio de Janeiro bro. I advise you to give an opportunity to Judas Priest and Anthrax, because I think they'll blow your mind. I'd suggest you to give it a go in the Defenders of the Faith and/or Screaming for Vengeance albums of the former for starts, and the Among the Living album to get to know a little bit from Anthrax. Cheers!

Hardcore actually started in the late 70s early 80s. It’s remarkable how fast the music evolved. Like black flag and dead Kennedy’s started in the late 70’s. Just a few years after bands like Ramones and Sex Pistols started punk rock. But hardcore is kinda a retrospective genre for those band. It wasn’t called hardcore until a little later in 81 when a band called doa released an album called hardcore 81

They were basically a 1950s rock n roll band with 1970s guitars and distortion. Simples. And punk rock was born

Just watched this again.... at first, metal fans hated punk rock. but over time there was a cross over of styles.... a key figure in this cross over was Lemmy of Motorhead, who loved the Ramones and wrote a great tribute song for them called "R.A.M.O.N.E.S."... and Metallica who were Ramones fans

the Ramones are sometimes called the Beatles of punk, because they wrote catchy, melodic songs, that are punk rock because of the heavy rock instrumentation, speed, and aggression.... they have lots and lots of great songs.... for something more gritty than this, try a song called "53rd and 3rd" , or songs like "We're A Happy Family", "Carbona Not Glue", or "Teenage Lobotomy"... and you are right about the style of clothes... the Ramones started a look that has endured as much as their music, and it is funny to see high fashion models etc wearing torn jeans and black leather jackets and not having a clue that they are dressing like Joey Ramone.. and no, they weren't brothers, lol!

I'd classify the Ramones as party punk, i.e not political and just for fun. Spizz Oil, The Rezillos and X-Ray Spex would be some other examples.
