the story pinely’s brother came up with is kinda real. the main character’s struggle only being able to achieve his goal of selling the yummiest cakes by committing atrocious acts against another sentient species… truly sublime. a reference to speciesism which humans perpetuate all too often, as well as a lesson against having your alien cake and eating it too.

You might not see this, but I'd like to thank you for bringing attention to this. I'm a recent film school grad. Almost all of us at my school have wasted money at these sketchy film festivals at some point. Years ago I even got an "honorable mention" at one of the festivals you would later win, lol. After submitting to a few, I realized what was going on and stopped. My peers look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them I'm never going to submit to these no-name festivals again. It's sort of an unspoken BS thing you're expected to do when you're starting out, as it's "just part of the game" and to rack up as many laurels as you can. It's sort of inescapable because starting out, you probably won't get into the festivals that matter; so "something" is better than nothing, right? That's where these scam artists make their money, by preying on unexperienced hungry dreamers. Thank you, Pinely, for shedding light onto this as it's a huge gripe of mine that isn't spoken about enough.
@mar-nyan Жыл бұрын
That’s such an interesting perspective! I kinda assumed this was just a scam directed at people who don’t know any better, didn’t think people who are actually considering movie making as their future career path would be spending money on stuff like that.
@234UltraP Жыл бұрын
@@mar-nyan Yeah, the more laurels racked up the more important the film looks on the outside, but the same could be done with less laurels if you get into an actual lower tier festival such as the Florida Film Festival (that is also academy award qualifying) which has an early bird deadline at similar cost as these no name festivals. Some no name festivals have in person award shows (where they rent out a small theater and / or hotel conference room and screen shorts) that they’ll tell you to go to as a networking opportunity to meet other filmmakers… but you can also find local facebook film groups online that hold in person mixers where you can network for free... so I'm satisfied with skipping the no-names. I can understand people going to the in person events and maybe getting something out of it, but I actively discourage submitting to the online ones, especially ones that offer “guarantee placement” before you even enter.

Its presented in a joking way, but at the end of the day it's also a passion project written by a young boy then painstakingly animated on procreate of all things by his older brother, and brought to life with him and chad chad into something that's silly but in the end very sweet. This will become a wholesome memory, especially for the younger brother, which immediately gives it infinitely more integrity than any of the many cash grabs professional studios can put out.
