Exposing The Bulkhead Lie | Transformers Legacy Bulkhead Review & Analysis

Show Notes:
Man I do have a few things to say about this one, because although I feel I went above and beyond to make this a succesful video and to try to push myself and my videography, I'm just not happy with it.
I really like the moody, high contrasty look, but I'm starting to see how limiting that can be. I heard some advice that one should try to accomplish the look you want in camera but at the same time doing that seems to just lead to me having poor footage with crappy details.
So my footage just feels sub par and I was feeling this with the Blaster video too. And unfortunately, I seem to have shot myself in the foot in another way because I was lazy.
I worked to get a few motion shots in this video especially for the intro, so I filmed at 60 fps but my camera can only shoot 60 at 1080p. But I filmed a lot of this video at that lower scale and it shows, but I wonder if the extra graininess is mostly due to the lighting issues.
On the plus side, my camera can generate proxy media, and that made the editing process way smoother. It was fun to edit and I probably would've finished this video sooner if I wasn't working overtime at my job this week.
I always had this fancy intro in mind for this video, and to push myself to attempt it, I didn't even write a snappy intro like I usually try to. I heard Time of the Season by the Zombies on KZbin Music recently, and that got my mind working.
Obviously I can't license such a famous and ancient song, but I knew I wanted to go in a kind of psychadelic route, which lead me to the song I picked, which I will have listed below.
But all in all, this video really proved to me how much more I need to learn and practice. I feel I've come a long way in a short time, because I always try something new each video and I think this was the video I experimented the most with so far. But I really wanna get better and better not just for my viewers, but for my own enjoyment.

But I like to think of this as either Bulkhead if he was a major character on the IDW Comics Universe, or a younger Prime Universe Bulkhead, back when he was a more muscley fellow, so to speak. Back when he was in his.... Prime. Heh? *Heh?!*

The moment I saw this guy's alt mode, I knew it was supposed to be Animated Bulkhead. I mean...a straight military vehicle rather than a jeep? Glad I'm not the only one who caught on. And truth be told, even if that wasn't the case, I'd be headcanoning him as a G1 Bulkhead with a personality skewing more towards what we got in Animated. I will always prefer Animated's gentle, friendly, slow to anger, hulking space bridge technician and artist to Prime's brutish Wrecker. Sidenote: he looks phenomenal with Origin Bee. Really ties the Animated vibe together.

That's pretty accurate. He was supposed to be an amalgamation of the two, with an origin story tied to G1. Using more on Animated's Bulkhead origin story of being a "farmer" to then repairman that was then dragged into the war. So he was supposed to be an all new Bulkhead, inspired by the previous versions, to officially make him available for G1 as a character in that world. Not sure why they went with the whole "multiverse changed" whatever stuff, when they could have simply done him like that & he'd still be a celebration of Prime's anniversary. That's also why he's a more "generic" type design. He's supposed to be a generic civilian of cybertron dragged into the war.

From what I can recall from what I've read around some forums and designer comments, the whole 'multiverse' angle was pushed by marketing in case of a new Netflix series. Feeling that Prime had more of a marketing pull with simple name recognition due to the recent anniversary, they just slapped it on there and called it a day.

4:14 This is what I've been saying about Arcee. Her wheels are on the _sides_ of her lower legs, her front wheel is on her back in a way vastly different to her design in Prime itself. (Although I'll give them that it would probably be difficult to have it go IN her back the way it does in the show.) However, you know who has his bike mode wheels on the sides of his lower legs? You know who's wheel is on his back in a very similar way, minus being tilted to the side, along with the rest of the very front section of his bike mode? *_Ransack._* Even Arcee's head on her figure looks like it makes a better Ransack head. Its like they released them backwards, Ransack being the original, and Arcee being a shit repaint because it doesn't work with the mold at all.

they tried to sell it as "prime" because "as a mix of animated and prime into G1" and "all bulkhead but Energon's" doesn't fly the guy is an "evergreening" of a charather that only had 2 similar-yet-different looks, which was had to do in the first place. honestly, I thing it was the best choise, with hasbro being sandwitched between the "we want it EXACTLY as the cartoon" crowd and the "we want it EXACTLY as the original toy" one, they could have never brought everyone together. (and, let's face it, the not-officially-revealed-yet blitzwing manage to do both and still have pre-release drama) I would have sculped some more lugnuts in the chest tho, he looks slightly underarmored when put near the other 2 versions

I don't think that prime bulkhead was G1-efied at all actually, or at the very least not in the way people are saying. When looking at the figure more closely there are a lot more details suggesting its closer to the prime design than a G1 look. Stuff like the head, thighs, weapons, etc. would look completely out of place in a G1 artstyle. What I think is actually going on is that the changes were made so Bulkhead would feel more in place in a vehicle display, thus the reason why his chest is more boxy despite being depicted as a more round character in his source material. Of course because it's his center mass and the immediate thing your eyes attach to, people see the boxy look and think of G1, because thats what we've been doing for the last decade.

In all honesty, I like this Bulkhead as a more realistic interpretation of his animated design. It actually makes me want to pose him with Bumblebee. Yeah, in universe it doesn’t make sense to compare him to his prime version, but to me at least, it makes sense to have him transform into a big bulky military vehicle

I like it because it’s more of a “what if bulkhead was around in 84-89 it gives me a nice feeling for some reason probably because I grew up with G1 and Prime in 2013/ 2014 so I’m a mix of both worlds the G1ified Prime designs don’t bother me besides the Prime designs are so odd they’d probably be heavily kibbled up like Arcee has a wheel IN her BACK face it studio series probably can’t do it so let’s just appreciate that hasbro is acknowledging Prime and not leaving it behind next year’s leader Skyquake is gonna look odd though but I’m excited none the less

I think Thew said it best when describing this figure's existence: it's less like they did Bulkhead a favor by giving him a new toy, and more like they did the toy a favor by making it Bulkhead. Of course that doesn't mean I don't like it. I got the figure and it's a really enjoyable figure. It just feels like it being Bulkhead was tacked on at the last minute.

Yeah, he’s just too… square for my liking. Bulkhead, in both Animated and Prime, is round. Hell, Animated makes a point of his roundness, and kinda centers his entire character around it! I’m gonna wait for the inevitable retool on this one. The Prime Bulkhead fits well enough into the G1 style for me!

I'd unironically love to see a video about Ransack and Crumplezone, those two were my favorite characters in Transformers Cybertron, and I honestly think Ransack is the best toy to come from the Cybertron series. Absolutely love him, and I seriously hope the Arcee mold gets reused to give us a new Ransack figure.

I have been thinking the same thing! Since Transformers Animated is set in 2030, Animated Bulkhead's earth vehicle mode is a near futuristic design of a six wheeled military vehicle- with Legacy Bulkhead's earth vehicle mode is an indeterminate late 20th century design of the same vehicle! it's super interesting!

I mean, the alt mode is basically Animated Bulkhead zapped with a Minecraft ray. The robot mode, while still off, still makes more sense as a "fit" version of Animated Bulk since the chest is actually supposed to be just the *entire* front of the vehicle, not a bunch of compressed bits of front grille and hood like Prime's actually is. The non-claw hands and other details probably were never there simply to be GEWUNN compatible. Literally the only thing that says "Prime Bulkhead" is the head sculpt, because the lower jaw is missing the sawtooth look that *is distinctly Animated Bulkhead* . Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the "original" head was literally the same save for sawtooth bits on the lower jaw, and a different head crest. It's not the first time something like that would have happened in TF toys.

Apparently in the transformers prime Bulkhead was originally going to be Ironhide. But he had to be changed because in Dotm he was going to be killed off, which is why theres such a difference in personality and alt mode compared to his animated counterpart. Cute cat btw.

Honestly, if they gave him a different head sculpt and marketed him as Bulkhead, not prime bulkhead, I may have been more interested. Still, his design isn't based on any media and it isn't exciting enough to intrigue me. Just a square generic truck. Watch Legacy Beast Wars Inferno just be a fire truck with BW Inferno's head.

I had this same thought too when I got mine. His alt mode just felt more reminiscent of his animated form's alt mode. It's not only more militaristic, but the animated vehicle is meant to be an armored transport that you would see police of SWAT teams use. Prime's design is more of a Humvee with a more suburban look to it to make it look like it belonged to a family while still looking tough. I guess the TLDR of it is: Prime's altmode is a van, while Animated's altmode is almost a truck, so it makes sense.

I still mainly think this is supposed to be G1 Bulkhead. And I mean that's neat, giving non G1 characters G1 designs. But they shouldn't have beat around the bush with the name. This figure is only called Prime universe Bulkhead because the line is doing Prime Aniversary figures. I feel like they did design this figure to be a new Bulkhead, not based on any previous design. But after seeing how well Kingdom did incorporating the plural part of Generations back into the line they started doing new Prime figures, and they nameslapped TFP Bulkhead's name on it, changed the head, and gave it a mace. Because of the first 2 waves of Legacy we have a Bulkhead that clearly isn't TFP Bulkhead, a Knockout who is a reshelled G1 Jazz, and Arcee being the only original mold we've seen so far. Does kind of scream rush job, doesn't it?

I agree 100% with this review. I grabbed Bulkhead when I saw him at Target last week maybe Wednesday, finally opened it Sunday, and man, I was impressed. I did too think the transformation was going to be simple O.P. style, but was also impressed with the way things were moved around and hidden. Truck mode looked so clean the first time I did it. 👍 Im digging this guy, excited to see what else they do with this line.

The way i see it, they would have to make a decision. Either 1, they make new molds based on the prime designs and risk getting the critisism that they are not as good as the fantastic first edition versions, 2 they just rerelease the first edition versions and get called lazy, or 3 they do something completely new and avoid the risk of making worse than first edition figures

i actually like this bulkhead too. the same as with original alt mode. also, this truck is just good that its "unpainted" behind cab. real life military machinery if have no camo is wholepaint with single color to blend in environment round it, so its actually perfectly accurate. maybe only cab of truck in robot mode could be "transformed more" , because he kinda looks like when i made space armor out of cardboard as kid. still gonna get him the second i see him in store somewhere tho.

This figure can be as close to perfection as Hasbro gets and I still wouldn’t want it. The problem is simple, he just doesn’t feel like Bulkhead. It’s Bulkhead’s head slapped on top of a generic military bot’s body and the results are awkward. Every time I look at that figure I just want to see it with whoever’s head it was supposed to have.

Aligned continuity is no more so don't put your hopes up. Also, it's not in the budget to do figures like that going forward with how much engineering was put in place. We might however see MP style figures from that line one day

@@Andulvar I really don't think so. We get at most 2-3 Mps per year, instead of a whole line of chug figures. We're still not done doing G1 and Beast Wars, we're not even close. If we see normal Prime figures in the future, it's going to be chug. Whether that'd be a normal line, reissue or a retro/og rerelease.

Legacy Bulkhead has like you said the Animated look, which I can see this mold being used two or three more times beyond what we saw with the Wreckers collection those reuses being: 1. Animated Bukhead. Realistically they can do it, I mean look at Crankcase from Skids, it would be a heavy retool, we just won't be able to get Energon Bulkhead from it though so we can't have the complete set with his old Master Roshi phase in Energon 2. G2 Pyro, I mean to me its evident that G2 is getting love in this line and the Euro G1/G2 character of Pyro would be a perfect character to use for this, as he has a BFG fitting of the canopy along with a riot shield, its just a mattter of if Hastak uses it that way when its obvious to me atleast 3. Landfill, the G1 Double-Targetmaster could be done too with heavy retooling too and the shield on the back part would also be fitting as that is how the dump for his dumptruck alt mode was placed on his G1 toy

Late to the party but after watching your video and your opinion on this Bulkhead, I will say this : As an Animated and Prime fan who missed out on both toys at the time, I'm glad we got another Bulkhead toy in the Legacy line. My *only* nitpick with this figure is the legs, and that's because to me, it feels like it can barely support the weight of his upper body mass. Bulkhead is a massive bot in terms of size and weight (not saying he's fat, he's just a big boi) and his animated and prime design gives you the impression of a competitive weight-lifter that can mess you up (whether intentionally or not depending on the incarnation). Here? He looks like Kronk with Bulkhead's... Uh.. head. As you said in your video, Legacy Bulkhead feels like a retool and the promotional images did him an injustice. It's the reason why I hesitated to add him to my collection. I'm still not a fan of his legs but maybe he'll look better in person once I actually get him.

I agree with you on all the stuff about him not really resembling bulkhead and I think your Idea of him being a pretool is right. I mean Road rocket was confirmed through walmart stocks and with the thig arcee can do with her splitting front wheel and how it can be placed above the shoulders in a very similar way it's basically all but confirmed that she was a pretool for road rocket. My conspiracy theory for why the legacy prime figures don't really feel like prime figure is because they were designed to fit multiple characters, thus they couldn't go all out with making them feel ultra prime stylized or even look too much like the characters they were trying to do at all since they had to be able to turn them into multiple characters.

im worried for future legacy prime figures, like if they do a soundwave prime legacy, that is really similar to his g1 design with a prime head, I will be pissed because it fundamentally goes against everything that depiction of the character represents, same with them making Starscream bulkier like his g1 design, Starscream and soundwaves designs in prime are clearly based on their personality, with Starscream be a cowardly backstabber and soundwave being a loyal intelligence gatherer alway's in the background. i guess I've just grown really sick of everything just being g1 or g1-efied takes on characters over the past 3 years.

No, I have to disagree, this is not, and would not be more paletteable even if presented as Animated Bulkhead, that design is after all, the progenitor of the Animated aesthetic, and also has the sumo-like silhouette and then some, demanding more unique traits like the kibble panels and three-digited pincer claws. This is a new take so drastically distant from it's progenitor, that you feel immensely frustrated, but no longer insulted. My feelings on the RC will conclude similarly but with a slight inversion, but that can wait til you've got your review out

I am shocked that you didn't connect the dots on Legacy Bulkhead and Age of Extinction Hound. They have the same alt mode and Hound is where the minigun accessory comes from. The shoulder mounted weapon being a smaller reference to G1 Hound as well, but AoE Hound is where half of this is coming from. Sgt. Bulkhound.
