Southend Dog Training

6 жыл бұрын

This is a 9month old german shepherd who mouths so much it's leaving people in the house on edge and with scratches and bruises on their hands.
You can't even stroke this dog without becoming a chew toy.
This dog has had a PO trainer tell the owners to ignore the dog when it mouths and to redirect the dog with a toy. They were also lied to when the trainer said the dog mouths a little.
This is not the odd mouthing when the dog gets over excited, this mouthing as soon as the dog is touched or whenever the dog gets bored.

Seriously thank you for this!!! Everyone who doesn’t “approve” of this type of training hasn’t had a dog that is VERY monthly! I have a lab, German Shepard, and Alaskan malamute, he is 4 months and he has gotten better over time, but he still bites my ankles or hand when he wants something. Just using a led that I can tighten and say no when he nips is a great solution. Otherwise I am stuck in my room till he falls asleep by the door, and if I wake him I get bit. He is just playing but my legs are completely covered in bruises, scratches and punctures. I believe in extremely mouthy dogs/puppies there is a place for negative reinforcement (when she nips, he pulls the lead and says no). I have tried only using positive reinforcement and it has helped, but not completely gotten rid of the mouthiness. And yes my puppy is in good health, he gets enough exercise, I play with him, he sleeps enough at night and throughout the day, he gets enough training each day, etc. I promise I have been extremely consistent and dedicated to training my puppy and having a consistent schedule with him. Just save any other ideas you have or issues you bring up, because I have probably done it (or am doing it), or thought about a better way, but nothing has worked. Again, thank you (so f******* much) for this video and offering an alternative to the “commonly accepted practice,” of how to train a puppy/dog.

It's a trend for people to accuse anyone who doesn't treat an animal the exact way they treat it. Alot of this comes from ignorance and a type of pet owner that is paranoid of having cause any negative emotions in the dogs.

@@starsiegeRoks Yes, I have 4 GSD and they're super friendly and playful and cheerfull, I was 18 and very naive when I first got them, so I had to do a lot of correcting and had to kind of assert myself as the alpha and ever since they're amazing with kids and people. Like in Balkans people get scared of dogs easily but the whole street loves my boys and they walk around the street many times and no one gives a crap anymore, sometimes you need to be assertive and "rough" with a dog. Never would hit one of course

There's a distinct difference here between what you're doing and what a lot of other people do. Your Humane about it and are administering a quick tug as opposed to halfway strangling the dog as I've seen many people do. I've used positive only techniques with all of my dogs and have had excellent results but I'm willing to admit that not every animal learns in the same way just like every kid doesn't learn in the same way.

@harrykins my pup is also eight months. He gets excited and tries to get us playing by being mouthy. When we are on walks and in the house i scruff his cheek/ear ask for his eyes and a sit and hold him until he lets go, then he’ll sit until I feel he is calm enough to continue with what we were doing. It works after a couple goes but I imagine it will take a bit of persistence and fixing responses family give him when he does any inappropriate thing similar (jumping up or yipping at people).

The most important part is to establish a communication channel with the dog to let him know when we don't like something, as well as respect when he doesn't like something. This is something that, with some experience and time getting to know your dog, will come naturally. I have had close to 10 dogs in my life and it is rewarding to understand each other.

My current GSD is displaying similar behaviour, I have not got to the point of needing to use the lead yet as it is still early days and using vocal corrections (ah ah) seems to be working most of the time. I am all for positive reinforcement and for most things that works well, but I see nothing wrong with this type of correction, it is being done in a controlled way, hardly any force is being used with the correction and the dog is understanding. Nicely done Sir ;-)

I will defiantly try this with 1 year old lab because she is the same as this dog. Thanks for a video about an older dog mouthing and loved the responses to people telling you this was cruel cause people are really too touchy about training nowadays, and watching like 100 KZbin videos that tell you to yelp or walk away are not helpful and don't work! Hopefully this will work for me 🐾

This is good, We have adopted a 3 yr old German shepherd who has this habit. He had been taught "Uh Uh" as a "no"command but this did not work very well. One day he got a bit too carried away and drew blood on both sides of my wrist, although I had stayed calm so far I got a bit annoyed about this, grabbed his collar and shoved him out the door, banging it behind him. (we have a secure yard). I left him outside for a little while, maybe about 20 mins. When he came in he was quite contrite, wanting to inspect my injury and lick the area. Since then, we still try the "Uh Uh" first and if that doesn't work we only have to quietly say "Outside" and he will stop mouthing and lick instead, we hadn't thought about rewarding when he licks, maybe that is what we need to do to stop the mouthing altogether. We have only had this dog for 3 months.

Have a client with a 6 mo king shepherd who's mouthing was a couple levels higher than this but I still managed to gain much greater success than owner in only a few mins. I find inexperienced owners tend to flinch and continually pull hands away until they ultimately have to resort to using the kennel or throwing the dog outside to end the dogs relentless nipping. Just to add to your instruction, I found that tug of war game worked extremely well to teach what's acceptable to mouth when dealing with owner. First, we're telling the dog when it's appropriate to use his mouth. Second, we further reinforced the no-mouthing concept by using the other hand to praise while the mouth is occupied by the object of tug of war.

This is exactly what I am dealing with with my 5 month old German shepherd. I tried distractions, reinforcement, and other positive ways but nothing seems to work. I plan on doing this and adding the lead to have more control. He doesn't bite me as much but when new people come in or someone whos been away comes back he goes straight to nipping, not aggressive but regardless those trying to pet him can't do so without the nipping.

We too have been fostering a two year old Siberian Husky. When he comes in the house and is bored he immediately starts chewing on me. He starts at my ankle and works up to my shoulder. Ignoring, shunning etc. do not work. A quick spray of water gives him pause to stop but he's quick to resume. So far putting him back outside is the only thing that works. Aside from that he is very loving! ha ha

Nagulan Nathan yes he gets excited it doesn’t hurt but still it’s not good. He’s also a nightmare for barking at ppl when on the lead especially. He chased a jogger and was jumping and nipping on his clothes! Obviously it’s scary as he’s big with a loud bark. I was dancing to something the other day and he jumps up and mouths so had to stop. Keep watching these vids but a lot use nasty collars which I’m not doing. He’s 14mths. Getting his balls chopped after Xmas hoping that will help.

I have 3 dogs, 2 Siberian huskies and a little old Tiberian spaniel mix. My older husky boy is 3 now and is an angelic sweetheart, had him since he was 9 wks old....he was mouthy for 7 months or so and then it just stopped, now he's so incredibly gentle. He sits nice and quiet, never chews, barks, jumps or bites...he's a snuggler and loves to sit on your lap and cuddle you...so loving! I thought, "let's get him a friend!"....he looks so bored in the yard alone and he LOVES to chase and be chased by other dogs, especially other huskies. My older dog doesn't play with him, she a people lap dog, doesn't really like other dogs. So, I got a female husky puppy 8 weeks old when my boy husky was 2yrs old. He adored her and she seemed great....at first. But a year on now, she's been a total nightmare.....she nips, bites, jumps, barks, destructive chewing, pee and poop on sofa and bed!, dominating him and my little old lap dog. My older boy never corrected her rude behavior but my little older dog did, she doesn't take any crap from any dog. Funny enough, my younger husky is very submissive to other dogs at the dog park....she only dominants my older husky. I've had multiple private training sessions, crate training, you name it....nothing has worked. There's dozens or chew toys all over the house, kongs and bully sticks, and stuffed toys.....nothing helps. I'm hoping she just grows out of it. I really hate to give her away to a more active younger person but I am starting to wonder, I have spent already like $1000 on training for her only. She really needs to run 10 miles in the morning....I am NOT a runner. I work from home and she has always been allowed to run outside multiple times a day. She runs around the yard, which is fenced and she chases my older husky and he chases her, but it's not enough for her. I walk her only a few miles in the evening after work, but it's not enough. Really she needs to live with a very active long distance RUNNER. My older husky is so calm and chilaxed ....so every dog is different. Not every husky is the same, I know that now. Don't get a second or third dog and expect them to behave like your other dogs.....like people, they all have their own personalities and may not live up to what you hoped. My older husky is sometimes afraid to go outside because she constantly bites on his neck and wrestles with him constantly. He likes to play on his terms, not hers. He just wants to sit on the deck stairs and watch the woods for animals in peace and she doesn't leave him be...but he's such a wimp he doesn't out her in place.....he just runs to me for cuddles when he's scared of her....mind you, he's much bigger than her too! He's a very sensitive dog, his feelings get hurt easily...you think I'm kidding but really.....he looks at you like a person would, like a kid. My younger husky is like autistic, she's not like him at all, there is no close connection with us like we have with him. She doesn't do cuddles at all. So, if you think your dog needs a playmate....really think that over! My dog didn't need a friend. He was happy before.

It got to the point that my autistic kids became so afraid of him because he would latch onto their ankles and hold on. He ripped so many of our clothes and we had cuts all over our body. I ended up giving him to a lady with 5 dogs living on 10 acres. After many many months she said he finally became less (not completely) mouthy. I wish I would have seen this before. I'm happy he's super happy being with her and all of the other dogs but I would have rather worked with him to get him to stop.

Here in my country we have a situation with street animals that suffer a lot from abandonment and very bad and abusive people, so I took her as a foster mom but I fell in love with her. So many dogs and puppies in the street, I don't want to give up on her on stop doing this, I do believe she can be around without mouthing. I even paid for basic training but it feels like the problem its bigger and there is something I am not doing okay. Wish me luck!

We have tried a technique, try getting your dog familiar to the collar everytime he takes interest in it, treat him, try touching the collar to the neck and if he doesn't react treat him. And possibly u might get him to put a collar. Since now he associates collar as smth that gives him treats. Hope this helps u.

But she tends to play bite, which leads to me and my fam having scars. She has started to not bite but when she’s to exited she does. We have to keep her on a long rope so she can run around or else she will try chase my Shetland pony. We have tried lots of ways to try train her to stop but they haven’t worked, which means she has to stay on that long rope. When she started to get older I couldn’t walk her with out being pulled and yanked along, until my parents use a chocker collar now ( just the chain no spikes) I don’t like chocker chains nor do my parents but it’s the only way to stop her with out us getting pulled. She still pulls us along even if we use the collar. We have taken her to puppy school but the puppy school people couldn’t train her, they also told us to pick the dog up if it’s biting which makes no sense since she’s a big German Shepard and I’m a small human 🧐 ( also the puppy school we went to had no clue on how to train her so we stopped going and tried you tube which worked for other stuff but biting and mouthing and jumping and pulling it didn’t ).my family can’t afford for a dog trainer nor have the time which doesn’t help either. So if anyone has some tips to help please let me know so I can try teach her. I’ve been told that ones there 3 they grow out of it and I hope it’s right but I’ve been seeing people here that are having the same problem and their dogs are 6 and up.

This was really helpful. I tried to do everything right and was in training classes and online classes and socializing. Corona did not help matters. But we have a GSD Husky mix that is 6mo and amazing with obedience training, but she herds and nips my kids and mouths so badly when she is excited and wants to play. I just can't get it under control. Our obedience trainer just isn't helping us! I don't know how to find the rigt trainer to help us.

My 6 month old GSD is SOO mouthy and jumpy! I’ve tried literally every technique, she still won’t stop. Even with a slip leash she just wants to chew on the leash. I have a large house so it’s hard to just have her chewing on the leash(cuz she won’t stop no matter how many times I pull to the side) and then she just will move onto jumping. Never ending cycle 😭😭

I cant exactly apply this correction because my 4 months old GSD makes sure his bite is grabbing me well and actually pulls me to chew on me if I correct him that way with a leash i will definitely have a worse injury, and in the same time its very hard not to react to his bite since his bites mostly draw blood , note that he loves biting my calves , how can I correct him?

I have one of my shelter dogs who gets very excited to play and starts grabbing the leash. If I stop him grabbing the leash he grabs my hand and seriously mouths it. Yesterday we were playing next to the pool and splashing the water and I noticed that he was targetting not the water but my hand actually. What to do about it? I have quickly trained both of my girls to play gently but this guy seems to be very determined to keep playing the way he likes.

The trick with this is that the pull gets the dog’s focus off of biting before she gets too invested in the hand near her face. When a dog pulls on a leash, it’s probably because they see something or someone that is so exciting that the only thing on their mind is to get to it, choking be damned. You have to get their attention on something else before the thing that excites them can take complete hold of their focus.

I have a 2 year old Doberman/Lab mix. Has done basic training and although he has improved quite a bit, he still mouths, jumps, and never listens to me. When in dog training, he would listen 100% to the trainer. When it comes to me, he ignores me. Don’t know how to build that authority when nothing works with him. Even if he’s really hurting me and I have to hit him on the nose he doesn’t stop. No idea what to do with him. He’s kept outside for most of the day or in a crate if he’s inside the house.

If you watch the end he has the owner petting and rewarding the dog with the treat themselves. Half of dog training is training the owners as well, so it’s a process, and it works differently with each owner and each dog. You go with the flow and do what is best for each situation. There is no one size fits all.

No! Do NOT accept that behavior! I would get a Sprenger prong collar and connect it to a long leash/lead. Leave lead/leash on her inside the house. Immediately “pop” or correct him by pulling lead/leash the VERY second he does this. This reallyyyy helped control my GSD’s mouthing

This is exactly what is happening to me atm got a 7 month old GSD and I’m the chew toy and the wife is too scared to stroke her etc, she’s a real smart dog who learns really quick so why can’t she learn not to bite?i tried all the other “methods” saying owww loudly/turning your back/firm voice etc I’m sure the dog is just as confused ,so what is seeming to work to a point, is a calm voice slow strokes on back and a shed load of excercise probably too much if I’m honest.more than what is generally acknowledged normal proper amount and a shed load of treats in the form of carrots.

Yeah my GSD works beautifully on lead and with treats. Take either one away and she just goes straight back to mouthing everything and everyone. We now have to keep taking our Daxie away and putting her in a bedroom because Lu just has NO end, and the longer she " plays" the harder she bites. I'm not giving up, but training with treats just seems to distract her. She's only looking at where the next treat is coming from (like the dog in this video) and is not really registering what the treats are FOR- as a reward for doing something right.

I've got a nine week old cattle dog that I've had for a week that is very similar to this except far more dangerous than I would expect. She has drawn blood at least 5 times today and it's really seeming like positive only, even at the early stages just is not right for her. She is very smart but we believe her to have "arousal biting" where she enters this intense mode when over hyped or stressed and bites like crazy. No clear signs of aggression, just complete loss of impulse control.
