Understanding how to Sidechain my music was always a goal, or knowing how compressors work.. I attended a music school in Hollywood ages ago and the one thing i learned from that was that i was making music WRONG. Learning the rules is great, it allows you to know how to break them. But be wary of having them make your music, following them too closely will keep you on the path with everyone else. So learn it, then throw it all out window!

Funny how people encourage experimenting in the modular world, but the minute you’re in front of a DAW to write, produce, mix, master, it’s often about following what is taught in a ‘Masterclass’ to be legit.

Sp-404sx/a sidechain trick: Set Sample/chops/loop level @ 64 or lower (no lower than 54) using the [start/end/level] button. Set your drums level to anywhere between 100-full level 127. Hold remain & Turn on MFX 12 (compressor) . Make sure knob 1 (sustain) is turn all the way up. Knob 2 (Attack) can either be turned down all the way, or at 9 'oclock. Knob 3 (compressor level) turn up until you hear the sidechain in action. *Side note: use a kick drum with a good warm feeling for a better effect. 😁.

ALM Salmple looks killer. Have you checked out the VPME Quad Drum? It’s only 4 voices so it probably won’t look exciting compared to your Salmple. I just picked one up after selling a handful of drum modules to fund it. The user interface is great, very intuitive after a quick glance over the quick start guide. Very pleased with it so far. It will be even better once I get around to adding some samples. It ships with a selection of samples that is more than adequate for now IMO. Some notable features are onboard LFO’s, left/right mixing, and even a simple compressor. The Gods Box Lollipop is on my radar for a dedicated compressor module. Hadn’t seen the 2hp Comp before this video. That could be a great option especially if multiple units are needed.

The TR8s actually has a really nice sidechain compression. There are multiple types of compression and you can change the parameters on it, but the thing I really like is that you can have it be triggered by anything on the machine and it does not even have to actually be playing to use. You can even have it be triggered by the accent channel or the trigger channel. The reason I like this is because I can use my TR8s as a sidechain compressor even if I am not using it for drums. I generally plug my modular synth into the external input then have the sidechain based on the accent channel with no drums playing on the TR8s. Then I put the accent channel to match the kick drum rhythm on my TR606 that is plugged directly into my mixer and poof! I have sidechain compression clearing the way for my 606 bass drum without needing to buy an outboard compressor, I am just using the TR8s as a compressor for other gear. There are a million ways to use it, but that is how I use it. edit: here is an example, I am using it to make the monologue bassline duck. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6C8gXakltWhraM

It doesn’t gotta be (super) expensive, everybody thinks that is just a quick 4k out the door. If you build your own case, costs go down. If you start small, costs go down. If you buy used modules, costs go down. Best thing to do is do your research and figure out where you ought to start. I recommend hopping onto the muffwiggler forum, or their discord (I frequent the discord daily). Modular allows you to hone in exactly what you want in a synth, so you can go as crazy or utilitarian as possible. Here’s the discord if you want: discord.gg/8tFZSe

Hey, cheapest modular setup, if you have a PC .... VCV rack = free software modular .... vcvrack.com .... you can learn and play whilst you experiment and find what sound you like ... save up for the modules that you have tried and like / but ... no rules, so.... you could also just buy stuff and spend 000's on stuff and have to sell again.... ...which is also valid ... ... could also gear up for DIY module building .... you have choices !

I had never really used sidechaining until I got the circuit. Its dope how simple and prominent that feature is cuz I otherwise would never have messed with it. Although now I do wish you could assign the source to other tracks but whatever, still cool.

You can! (Using external midi) You can even select a different sc source for each synth, as well as settings for attack, hold, decay and depth. Check the Programmers Reference Guide for the required cc's.

You shouldn't even need to use a mult since you're using the E'S Drum Mixer. There's an aux output bus that is perfect for exactly that task. I actually think it was designed specifically for sending a mix of bassy drum sounds out to a sidechain input for ducking other voices around your drums. Basically exactly what you're doing here

Wicked video, always a pleasure to learn from you. Correction re: Circuit - you can select any of the drum parts as a source for synth 1 and 2 (independently!) , as well as attack, hold, decay and depth settings. But you will need to use a midi controller to access these. Check out the Programmers Reference Guide for the required cc's.

I really wanted to like the sidechain pumping effect, but I just don’t. I get it when it comes to making the kick heard in beat heavy music, but when it’s making everything squished in the rest of the track, it detracts from the overall feel. Maybe it’s the type of music I do. Maybe if it wasn’t so pronounced, I’d be okay with it. Now, I can see it being a stutter effect for giving rhythm to a drone, that would be cool. One thing that you did say in the intro about that class you took, how is it “wrong” if it sounds good to you? I’m self taught in production, but I’m betting that if I took a class, the instructors would probably fling themselves out a window after observing my production techniques. 🤣. I’m probably doing everything wrong, but I like what I hear in my music. As always, great knowledge in your videos.

I have 1 question about the use of mutant brain with the launchpad pro...I see that on the same step seq track of the launchpad you have 1 pad of the square assigned to the crater kickdrum module and the other pads I suppose with the squid sample...how have you reach this? I own a launchpad pro too but I see that every step seq track can be assignable to a midi channel so for example I imagine that I can play different samples assigned to different pad notes on the squid sample...but how can you play also the crater using the same step seq track? I am very interested in this cause I would like to buy a mutant brain but I am not sure if fits my needs cause I have different modules for kick, hh and snare and I would like to control them "staying" in the same step sequencer track of the launchpad...to be clear in the same way I control a drum rack in ableton....
