F-150 PowerBoost Vs. Sierra AT4 CarbonPro (6.2L) DRAG RACE!

Welcome back Everyone!
Hope you are all keeping well!
For Episode 23 of Ordinary Drag Races we have a very anticipated race; the Ford F-150 PowerBoost Vs a 2021 GM Sierra CarbonPro 6.2L. Two VERY fast Trucks.
In Episode 17, seen here:

We raced a 3.5 F-150 EcoBoost against the 2021 6.2 CarbonPro Sierra.
It wasn't much of a race as the Sierra won quite easily no matter what we tried with the F-150 to help it have a faster 1/4 mile time.
So we went searching for something faster and were able to find a 2021 F-150 PowerBoost, which has a lot more HP and a ton more TQ.
It was a great race, and we launched both trucks several times in 4WD + brake torqued as well to get the best 1/4 mile times that we could.
This was one of the closest races that we've had, right up there with the Dodge Caravan Vs. Honda Odyssey:

For those that don't watch past the first race, the PowerBoost has the faster overall 1/4 mile time compared to the GM (see 9:38). Basically it just comes down to who launches their truck first/better as both are very quick, especially when racing at sea level, which we are (500 ft above)

I live in the south and when I run my pb I’ve found out it launches much faster around 1500 rpm’s

@@royweatherford64 nice, good to know! We found we got the fastest time from ours when it was launched at around 2000rpm.

I have a 22 Powerboost King Rach with a Livernois tune, CVF Titan v2 intercooler, and AEM dry flow filter, and finally got a Dragy and did one quick 0-60 run after work (63 degrees and humid) and ran 4.89 0-60. I let off before the 1/8th mile and ran a 8.5 which is somewhere around 13.3 1/4 mile. Powerboosts that only have a tune are running in the 12's in better weather. If you're buying a truck to be fast, get the F-150. $800 adds 95whp and like 85wtq, which puts you in the ballpark of 550ish hp and 620ish tq at the crank. Won't get those kind of numbers from any of the N/A trucks without spending a lot of money.

Nice thanks for the info! Yeah it is wild how those 3.5’s respond to such simple mods. Definitely best bang for buck for sure. We’ve currently only raced stock vehicles but as time passes we’re hoping to get into some modified ones too, just to compare. Cheers and thanks again!

Nah it’s just really hard to launch both of those trucks at the exact same time, while brake torquing and doing it over the radio. If we had an actual drag tree, that would be ideal. Maybe one day :) Additionally, the true 1/4 mile times are posted at the end of the video too which removes any potential driver error as well :)

You really should look into getting a portable remote controlled drag race tree that you can set up each time.

These Two Motors Are Matched Up But The Powerboost Has More Power.The 6.2L Big Boy V8 With A 10 Speed & A 3.42 Axle Ratio Which Is A Max Trailering Package Is My Favorite.The 6.2L Big Boy V8 Is 100% Accurate.

Yeah exactly, a lot of people don’t realize how quick those new 6.2’s are. The F-150 did take the win in this race, when looking at the 1/4 mile times at around 9:40 but it’s pretty impressive how well the GM kept up though. Big surprise for us!

@@workct4102 are you really asking that question? Why?? Take a look at the power advantage that the PowerBoost has, plus it has instant torque from the electric motors. In terms of power to weight ratios, the Ford has the GM beat. It’s got nothing to do with number of cylinders. Obviously the Ford has the advantage on paper and yet the GM really held its own. We were very surprised at how well it kept up, and we both thought the PowerBoost would win by a larger margin

I used to own a 5.3 although it wasn't fast but it made a really big difference when i stretched out the gears and did the shifting on my own. Sometimes gms are dum at shift points lol but it made a huge diff. I've got beat pretty bad just in drive but when I shifted through the gears I would actually pull ahead on the same person.

Interesting, thanks for sharing! We haven’t tried locking out the gears while racing in either truck because those 10 speed transmissions seem to shift very fast but that said, it could be worth a try in a future race!

I realize you guys have 2 people on board but my 21 Trail Boss 6.2 runs 13.78 @ 101 according to either a racebox or Dragy. 4 hi or auto. 0 to 60 in 5.38. i swear it was made on a Wednesday. My buddy has a Powerboost. We should race them. Not to mention 6.2 in a non TB or AT 4 should be quicker without the lift.

Wow those are impressive numbers! Yeah it would make sense that the Sierra would be quicker if it wasn’t an AT4. The less aggressive tires and lower suspension could definitely make a difference. There’s also rear end ratios that are at play too. What I’ve found is that our times are slightly “slower” when compared to the dragy type devices. I think it’s because we literally go frame by frame within the video editing software when it comes to calculating the 1/4 mile times. So in the very first frame that the vehicle begins to move, the time starts. And the very frame that the vehicle hits the 1/4 mile (which we mark out with a wheel every race) we stop the time. So it’s about as accurate as possible. We’re curious if the dragy’s are just slightly delayed but we could be wrong on that. Also, we raced a newer AT4 with just one person as opposed to two and the times were identical, interestingly enough! That would be interesting for sure. We don't have a new EcoBoost available at the moment but if we can find one, it would be fun to see how much faster the new F-150's are compared to the older ones

True - The Ford is the faster of the two trucks. We posted the true 1/4 mile times at the end. It narrowly edges out the GM. They were just so close that the launch determined who crossed the finish line first.

@KingdomAuto yes it is slightly faster, no doubt. But the power claims always seem to be slightly off one way or the other. Lol you would think with that much difference "claimed" it would be obvious wins. Good runs tho

We tried those things and didn’t make a difference. Seems when you’re putting your foot flat to the floor, doesn’t seem to matter what mode you’re in; the truck will turn out pretty much the same 1/4 mile time

Maybe. Hard to say. We raced this GM against a new EcoBoost and it beat the Ford quite easily. The truck in this video is Ford’s PowerBoost hybrid so it’s got more power and torque than the regular 3.5 Eco. Either way, great race. And we were both very impressed at how much top end power the Sierra has!!

Wondering how you arrived at the 5517 lb. for the Powerboost. According to my door sticker, mine comes in at 5906 lb. (7350 GVWR - 1444 payload rating = 5906).

Wow that’s crazy if they’re close to 6000lbs. We got our info from Ford’s tech specs online: media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/product/2021/f150/pdfs/2021-F-150-Technical-Specs.pdf Based on that info it seems as though the PowerBoost in this video is just over 5500lbs.

@@jdugs_f3070 haha jokes aside you’re absolutely right. With our races it doesn’t really matter about launch time, as we post the 1/4 mile time at the end of the videos. But especially for the close races, it’s fun to count down to see who can win the race We also typically only go out and film with just the two of us so unfortunately we don’t have another person to drop their hands. Although that would be great!

Great video BUT.... Ford 3.73 to GM 3,23 doesn't make this an equal race. My GM has 3.42 and they also offer 3.73. GM has slightly less power and both trucks with 3.73 gears would make a great race.

Oh definitely agreed. But we’re doing the best with what we have. In an ideal world the rear ends would be the same as you mentioned but we just grab any vehicle available to us and go from there. As the channel grows hopefully we’ll be able to test things out like this, different trim levels, differential ratios etc.

@@willardgentry6624 ah ok gotcha. Sorry, some people jumped to conclusions based on the first race that the GM was the faster truck, when it’s not. Both trucks are very fast but yes the PowerBoost is definitely quicker, despite the weight difference and having the panoramic sunroof :)

@@camclarke9952 The Ford did win the race and actually has a consistently faster 1/4 mile time. It’s just such a close race that the timing of the launch is basically what wins the race. That said if you’re comparing the actual 1/4 mile times and speeds, the F150 is always quicker

We brake boosted both trucks on every launch. Make sure you take a look at the end of the video where we post the 1/4 mile times. The PowerBoost is the faster truck, just they’re quite close in times

Its super easy. Picke the desired speed and put on cruise control...lol. Then count down 3...2...1...go and floor it on go. Boom. Done.

It’s a brand new PowerBoost, definitely nothing slow about it. More so than anything it’s just that the new 6.2 Sierra’s are faster than people realize when racing at sea level. Ya I had the 6.2 L with the 8 speed and it sucked gm has robbed me more then once. I will never buy another gm truck ever again. 2018 gmc 1500 with the 6.2L. (POS) To the 2021 hd Duramax Denali Wandering down the road. Most brands do that but there were more quality problems.

@@ericbuchta9765 man sorry to hear that. Yeah the new 10 speed transmissions have really increased the acceleration and 1/4 mile times of the 6.2 trucks for sure. But there have definitely still been issues with them, hearing a lot about the lifters now, and even the 3.0 diesel engines are having problems too. Ford struggled with cam phasers in the 3.5 engines but it seems like the newer ones are built a bit better. Either way, it’s tough when you go to buy a brand new truck and it experiences so many issues, gotta be frustrating

Don't torque break the 6.2 GMC. I own a 2020 Silverado trail boss with the 6.2 and 10 speed. It launches harder and faster if you just smash the accelerator from a dead stop in Auto AWD

We have run the GM a few times doing that in other races, actually this video here is a good example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmfOfZhua92mkMU We were in 2WD that race but also filmed video in other races doing what you’ve said. We were always able to get faster 1/4 mile times when in 4x4 and brake torquing with the truck we used.

@@rubbersatin yeah we tried a bunch of different RPM’s out off camera just to see which was faster. Our AT4 got its best time when launching at 2K rpm. The PowerBoost on the other hand did better when it was launched around 3k. Likely because it could build up some boost and go. Fun times!

The 6.2 is a 10 YEAR OLD N/A ENGINE and it takes ford 10 years and a hybrid system and twin turbos to catch up

Haha in a sense that’s correct. The older 6.2’s paired with the 6 speed transmissions were quite slow and the 3.5 EcoBoost F150’s took those races quite easily. As soon as GM put a 10 speed in with the 6.2 it really changed the game, especially when racing at sea level which we are. Pretty cool to see such different platforms run up against one another though!

@@vette9305 yeah they are great engines for sure. Nothing like a V8 :) We’re pretty impartial towards both brands. When Ford came out with the 3.5 turbo engine around the 2007 time frame (I believe the first F150 it went into was in 2011) it had quite a few problems that had to be ironed out. But it seems that Ford has done a pretty good job over the years addressing those problems as the 2021+ trucks don’t seem to be struggling the same way. It’s also great to see GM addressing the lifter issues too and then developing such a solid 10 speed transmission for their trucks too. Overall both seem to be great options and also very capable and quick!

It's wild how close this race was :) The PowerBoost has the slightly faster 1/4 mile time but we were both very surprised at how fast the Sierra is. We also race at Sea Level too so that definitely helps the GM have all of its available power.

Check the pinned comment bub - for these races it doesn’t matter. The Ford had the faster 1/4 time, it’s the faster truck. We’re not after reaction time, we’re looking at which truck is faster.
