She wrote this about her relationship with a 32 year old when she was 19. Now you need to listen to the song she wrote about the same relationship when she was his age of 32 called - Would've, Could've, Should've
@JRay.R3 ай бұрын
So this song came out when I was 18-19 years old and now I’m 32 and it honestly hurts no less now than it did back then. I can only imagine the complex and intense energy and emotion that must come with her so poetically putting her own traumatic life experiences in writing, having so many people relate with it, and having all this happen publicly. She’s honestly on a different level, in my opinion. The strength that it undoubtedly took to bring all this full circle deserves all the applause and I’ll always respect her for that.
@elizabeth96743 ай бұрын
She was such a kid when she performed this. I’m sure by now you know it’s about a relationship she had with John Maher when he was 32 and she was 19. So yeah, she let him know about it.

We all love angry Taylor. Just in case we aren't sure which "John" she's referring to, she included a perfect mimic of John Mayer's guitar riff.
@taralovesdiamondart3 ай бұрын
Angry Taylor subscribes to the mindset of "anything you can do I can do better." In Dear John, she's got the John Mayer guitar riffs, like you said, She's finally had enough of Kanye and her reputation album is full of rap rhymes and cadence, and 2 songs have guest artists rapping. Matty Healey breaks her heart, and TTPB has a few songs that sound like The 1975. She outperforms and outsells them all. I love petty Taylor.

I deeply respect the work TS has put into mastering her craft as far as her singing. I watch a lot of professional voice coaches praise her breath control and the tone and range of her voice, and that all comes from a great deal of work on her part. In truth, Taylor is a poet, a storyteller. Her delivery is with her music, and in that she excels. When she was young, she sang as a young person, and now her voice has matured, and she has honed that instrument to perfection. I don't think there is any professional musician that works as hard as she does to master all phases of her craft, and her success is testament to that. She is a masterclass entertainer and businesswoman.

There are a lot of women who have come out and had really horrible comments about being romantically involved with Mayer and most of them were closer to his age. She was barely of age, right at that age where you think you know everything but you aren't really grown yet. I have 4 daughters. I don't know how Taylor's parents were able to restrain themselves and allow her to have her own agency...
@lindabound17013 ай бұрын
You hit the nail on the head. TS has so many skills in her writing, story telling, show stopping performances, her singing isn't what she's showcasing - it's EVERYTHING ELSE!!!! The thing is, her music is from her own experiences, she really is the only one that can showcase the real meaning and emotion that her work is meant to do. So, she performs because she wants to be sure to deliver the WHOLE message as intended. She sings very well, she's no Celine Dion or Julie Andrews, but she's good enough to bring in 70-90 thousand people day after day to her shows. Deep respect for this brilliant woman and artist.

John Mayer and Swift were romantically linked from late 2009 to early 2010, when Swift was 19 and Mayer was 32. Swift's 2010 Speak Now track, "Dear John," is the singer's most infamous alleged reference to the much-discussed relationship. (From Google)

Enjoyed ur reaction to this iconic Taylor performance. Besides the emotional lyrics that she wrote 100% herself (no co-writes) and the vocals, she cleverly used a recognizable John Mayer guitar riff style, she named this song “Dear John” which is a generic name used for breakup letters to soldiers but, ofc, is also John Mayer’s name, and she called out his complete predatory bullshit. Taylor is 🔥🤘

John Mayer was a notorious user of young women and basically she called him out with this song. So many young women came out after this that he was outed. Thank you for pointing out the difference between a vocalist and a singer/songwriter. Taylor’s skill is in writing the songs and then telling the story through the performance. She’s not out here to do vocal gymnastics all over the melody, so comparing her to the legendary vocalists is unfair. She much closer to a Joni Mitchell or Carole King or Stevie Nicks. She’s maybe 20 or 21 here and she looks like a literal child in her little dress and ponytail. It really emphasizes the age difference between her and John Mayer.

THIS is my absolute favorite live performance of her early days :D I love how she is the whole song like "I should have known" and in the end when she said she wrote him a song, she says "You should have known." because he is gaslighting her and blaming her, while he is the one that was older and should know better than getting involved with such a young woman. Also he wrote her an Email threatening her that she shouldn't write a song about him. So the absolute sass of her to say in the end he should have known that she would write a song about him! I just love her 😂😂

Her band and her backup singers have been with her for years. Two band members have been with her from the beginning. Her backup singers (the Starlights), have been with her since her Red album (2012). As for her singing, she was still very young and her voice was changing. She has worked hard on her singing skills thru the years, but she definitely sounds like a teenager who is singing. I hear that on some songs until 1989. But I was still a fan since Debut (I am in my 60s) because I recognized her songwriting prowess… so I tolerated that teenager voice - and I will always sing Love Story and You Belong to Me at the top my lungs whenever I hear it. I really hope you do her full tours (in one sitting to get full impact) and Miss Americana.

I think that's one of the best parts about "discovering" Taylor later in the game, that realization of how much you've been missing out on how AMAZING she truly is. I always respected her, never hated on her or had issues with her or her music, I just thought she was alright (inattentively hearing radio hits) but once I started *listening* I was swiftly swept into Swiftiedom! No people keep saying she can’t sing because they hate her guts so much she’s so hated in 2024 it led to the massacre in the UK! That’s the reason though they hate her so they will not recognize her talent at all. It’s Pure Hatred and Selfishness.
@JRay.R3 ай бұрын
To be fair, she’s also more loved in 2024 than she’s ever been before. There will always be people in the world who find something to hate. Inevitably, some of those people, unfortunately, will allow that hate to destroy their humanity and that can lead to violence against anyone who can serve as a representative of the hatred in the persons mind. It’s so tragic and completely unnecessary, though…idk if it’s preventable, what happened in the UK. RIP to those lives lost and my condolences to all those affected by the tragedy.

This song is from her 2010 album Speak Now, complete self written I might add! This is her Speak Now World Tour when she was about 20-21, so she was still working on her vocal skills. The song is about John Mayer who was 32 and she was 19 when they dated. He groomed her, essentially trying to mold her into someone he wanted her to be. She was young and still learning, and she was a HUGE fan of John Mayer. This is also evident in her song "Would've Could've Should've" from her album "Midnights." Multiple women have come forward saying that he did the same thing to them, and guess what, they were all much younger than him too. John tried to sue her for this song, but he lost because "Dear John" comes from the "Dear John letter" which is defined as a letter that is sent from a woman to a man stating their breakup. Also notice how throughout the song she says "I should've known," but at the end of the song she says "you should've known" as in he should've known what he had done would make her write a song about it. So clever! I love this woman and her talent.
