The lyrical parallels between “Still alive, killing time at the cemetery. Never quite buried”. …and… “In my defense I have none, for diggin up the grave another time”. …? Ow.
@emmavink3 ай бұрын
Hm... She uses grave imagery consistently for different exes. Like she speaks about "dead and gone and buried" in All Too Well (10 min). She suggests in So Long London that The 1 was ultimately how she now feels about Joe. But loml is about Ratty Matty, so I'm not sure I'd make the connection between the two songs just from the grave imagery. Also, after Smallest Man, she does not want Healy back and she also doesn't wish anything good for the man loml is about. While So Long London and The 1 she does wish the guy Happiness (yes, intentional reference 😭) for his future.
@alohasargent3 ай бұрын
@@emmavink But she wrote The 1 in 2020 -- before her and Joe broke up and before she ever even got back with Matty. So, some speculate that The 1 was her thinking (in 2020) about how she lost Matty back in 2014. It's not how she feels now, it's how she felt in 2020.
@emmavink3 ай бұрын
@@alohasargent um... Ok... But that doesn't change the fact that she literally says "the one" in So Long London... She also didn't "have" or "lose" Matty in 2014. It was always referred to as an almost...until he shanked her in the heart when they did finally actually get together in 2023.

@@emmavink I see it differently after listening to TTPD. The album suggests they had been pining for each other for a decade. But I think it's powerful that all of us, as listeners, have different interpretations of the songs and muses.
@emmavink3 ай бұрын
@@alohasargent.... I mean... You are conflating tabloid gossip with what Taylor herself is actually saying on TTPD. He didn't "pine for her" for a decade. He was out doing whatever he wanted with whoever he wanted to. She literally says on Peter that it was much easier for him because she was the one waiting and never knowing. In fact... I can't think of one line from TTPD that suggests that he did anything other than pounce on when she was at her lowest point with Joe, start flirting with her because it was sexy that she was with someone else and they weren't supposed to be doing....and then proceeded to do all the other lovebombing-drugs-cheating-ghosting-denying thing we know he eventually did do to her. She pined. Yes. He didn't give a fk. He was the conman-coward-sleeper cell spy-criminal-fkboi who didn't plan to actually be with her for one second of the time he was ruining every single relationship she had since 2014 and making sure that she couldn't go back to Joe even if she wanted to. People get very lovey dovey about the first part of that song. The whole point is that that first part wat the lie that Ratty Matty sold Taylor on. Both in 2014 and in 2023. That's why loml is such a brutal song lyrically. She literally says "should've let it stayed buried"... She wishes she hadn't fell for his lies. She's ashamed and embarrassed that she did. She tells us so explicitly 😢

yes, loml is typically "love" but here it is "loss". If you go back, the guy was love bombing her saying she was the LOVE of HIS life. After all his crap she then says he was the LOSS of HERS. Yes, Tay will often invoke literature or film and totally flip the script. Listen to Peter from TTPD and you hear the threads of Peter Pan. Cardigan from folklore also has references to Peter Pan. She will make those links across songs or sometimes across albums. Her pen game is mind-blowing.

Oh shit it didn't fully click with the Wizard of Oz-symbolism for me until now; it wasn't hard to associate the cowardly lion, but the "field of dreams" could also refer to the poppy field where the wicked witch makes them fall asleep. In the movie they are woken by Glinda with snow (I don't remember if that detail differs from the book), and that makes the fire feel even more sinsiter

I think the valiant roar and bland goodbye is related to the fact it was a rekindled relationship (waltzing back into rekindled flames, in the cemetery never buried/should've let it stay buried): it roared back to life, with him claiming he was changed and/or brave enough to handle it (coward claimed he was a lion -- makes that a double meaning of the word roar), but then it just ended without much fanfare or drama (I'll never leave, never mind) so it was disappointing/bland. If that's even close, then it's so impressive how many layers are baked into each lyric choice she makes across lines!

No shade, but everyone keeps comparing her to rappers because of her writing, when really, it's all poetry, and these are long established poetic devices that have been around for centuries. Rap calls them something different, and quite frankly, usually incorrectly. What rappers are calling schemes are actually motifs, meaning the structure uses language and imagery all related to the theme (Taylor uses religious motifs for example in several songs). A scheme is a pattern of similar sounding words at the ends (or sometimes the middles) of the lines. I rarely listen to rap reaction channels for this very reason. All the misinformation being spread as knowledge is irritating.
