F150 Towing DUMP TRAILER on highway! 😬

Lets find out how the Max Tow F-150 does towing a 14k dump trailer on the highway. The truck is a 2018 F150 with the second gen 3.5 EcoBoost v6.

I have a Ford F-150 with a 3.5 Ecoboost as well, except mine is a 2014. I have the same exact dump trailer and my truck tows that trailer like a champ. Doesn't do too bad when the trailer is super loaded, but braking can definitely be a bit sketchy at times, especially if it's a sudden stop. Other than that, I think 3.5 Ecoboost truck tow pretty good.

bumper pull weight tongue is 500 pounds, class 4 hitch is 1000 pounds and 1400 pounds with weight distributing hitch.

I own a 2019 f250 crew cab long bed 6.2 gas. I use my truck to haul 3 atvs and a cargo trailer for camping. It is also my dailer driver. I love my truck it tows for me plenty. I have owned a diesel and they are awsome for towing. I don't tow enough to justify the cost. I don't use my truck for work only for recreational purposes mainly to haul my toys and for camping. Once I can get a larger trailer like a real toy hauler I may need to go diesel. I love my ford but if it comes time for diesel I may have to buy the cummins.

Can it pull that trailer with 10k of gravel in it? That probably goes over everything. Having a trailer like that would be awesome but could you actually move some material with it or would you have to limit to like 2 yards maybe 3k of load? Hard to determine how much tongue load vs how much is over the trailer axels. There’s a formula right?

You can get away safe hitch. But you go over the tongue weight pretty fast!

If you go diesel, stay on your maintenance. Many have high idle options and if you use good additives you’ll be fine.

Why do you need high idle?

Well, it can keep exhaust carbon from building up in the particulate filter if you have to idle for long periods. (Keep Re-gens at a minimum). 🤠

What hitch are you running? A typical 2" receiver hitch with a 2" ball wouldn't come close to weight of the trailer with load.

@@Tcw2019 that’s because he’s towing too much with a 1/2 ton. 3/4 ton would relieve a lot of the stress on the brakes, transmission and overall truck life. Not saying it can’t be done but your gonna expedite the life expectancy of your 1/2 doing pulls like this

I don't think there is on the XLT. But the lariat does have it.

An empty trailer? I would pull that with my Wrangler. I pull a 14' Appalachian dump (12K gross) with a 2019 F150 King Ranch 3.5L max tow and load it with no worries. The truck lives it.

My 2020 with 3.5 with 10 speed... is not as fun as my last 2.7 with 6 speed.. Doesn't seem to want to drop below 5th gear if I try to do a roll on and take forever

Sean, for the next video put some weight in that trailer and roll it across scale so you know how much you are pulling. Put max load for 2.7L, weigh it then pull same loop with 2.7L, 3.5L and your F-250 and compare. For another video put the weight at max for 3.5L and roll it across scales and repeat loop with 3.5L and F-250 and compare. I think those would be good videos. I have a unicorn 2018 F-150 with 2.7L. I got the payload package with heavy duty towing package with, wait for it, 3:15 rear gears!!!!! That’s why they made a 10 speed. First two gears are so low a 4-cyl could pull 7,000 lbs. For Highway it is perfect and when I put weight 5,000 lbs it doesn’t hesitate. Did some digging and Ford was going to ditch 3:73 in F-150 but people didn’t want 3:15 or 3:31 gears, and those were going to be the only choices with 10 speed but focus groups said no. The max tow package in F-150 comes with 3:55 gears these days which in days of old truck guys would have laughed at this fact. Peace

Too much trailer for the truck. When loaded, it easily will exceed your truck's maximum GCVWR.

With respect, DOT would have a field day with your set up. Its a beautiful truck and trailer, but you are well beyond your vehicle rating. Lets not even discuss accident liability. Look.... heres what you need to review. EVERY truck mfg has whats called a GVCW,,,or, Gross Vehicle Combined Weight. IT IS DIFFERENT than vehicle GVW. It is the total GVW rating of your tow vehicle, trailer and cargo combined that the mfg deems your vehicle is built to safely tow.. Exceed it and you are towing illegally in a court of law, because you have exceeded the mfg specifications. For the record....being empty means NOTHING for the DOT inspectors.... you will ALWAYS be judged on the GVW listed on the registration...unless you are loaded and overweight..... when your day gets really bad and wallet gets much lighter after the fines.
