If you’re sick of how your half ton truck tows then it may be time to upgrade to a 3/4 ton truck. Many 3/4 tons and 1 tons come with a diesel engine which produces way more torque than a gasoline engine which makes towing much easier. Plus 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks are designed specifically for towing and have much heavier duty components to allow this. If you’re a Ford guy then you may be looking at upgrading to an F250 or F350, but what’s the difference between them?

Depends on srw or drw drw has a Dana axle in rear and both 250-350 srw have sterling axle the 350 srw has a overload rear leaf that the 250 doesn’t unless you get camper package basically a 250 w camper package is roughly the same as a 350 srw then you have the 350 drw pickup vs the 350 cab and chassis now there is a big difference there with springs and frame totally different setup

First why do you care that someone doesn't tow with their F250/350? They're much heavier duty and hold up better in almost all conditions. Also something you left out, F250's usually come standard with a 370 gear ratio & 350's with a 410.

Good video however “don’t be that guy comment” was a little unnecessary. I’m looking at one of these trucks for a truck camper and plan never to tow anything with it. Im sure there are many who also require a higher GVWR as well. Also the Diesel engine option is big attraction to upgrade.
@reedprior4255
@reedprior4255 6 жыл бұрын
Speaking of truck campers on these trucks, that also impacts the gas vs Diesel engine choice. Weight is everything when carrying a camper, and the diesel adds weight to the vehicle without a compensatory increase on max allowable weight. A great 250 with air bags and/or oversprings will haul a heavier... and nicer... camper than a diesel model 350. After 10 years with two different truck campers, I find myself considering a dually next time I replace the truck. Adds more weight capability, and a measure of added safety in the event of a tire blowout

I live in California, and all pickup trucks are considered commercial and the weight fees are simply based on unladen weight, so I got the gas F350 with resale value in mind. My only complaint, and it is barely a complaint, is that the truck is really bouncy when not weighted down. I personally like it, but I would caution against buying it if you frequently plan to take passengers or small children. is there a specific Super Duty model that better riding unladen than the other?
@ApolloTheDerg

Yes, consider the logistics of building and selling trucks but also building and selling parts. It makes life easier to use the same parts made on the same line at the same cost. The differences you will find basically come down to suspension and axles, that includes brakes and the like. I’m about to put 2004 F350 axles under my 1996 F250 haha, the big Dana 60 and disk brakes for all wheels is going to be nice. The rest of the truck is basically the same as the F350 for my 1996, same doors, same interior, same motor, same parts.

Sorta? If the 350 has taller blocks I’d imagine it wants taller shocks. You can use the F350 blocks and shocks on an F250 though, basically make sure you aren’t changing one dimension. Also axles being slightly different also means brake hardware might be different, just pay extra attention.

Here’s a reference. I currently own both a gas and a diesel of comparable size snd options. The gas truck with the 6.2 Empty with no trailer I do lucky to get 6-8 mpg in the mountains of Wv. When im hauling even my small 16 foot lowboy the mileage drops a mile per gallon or two. I was pulling my 28 foot gooseneck that bed hauling hay this winter and avg 4-6 mpg. Snd I don’t abuse the truck either. I try my hardest to save fuel when I can. These are hand figured numbers too. I don’t rely on the displays estimated mpg even though it’s usually extremely accurate. Ok so here’s the kicker. That sane truck with the diesel empty I’m getting 22-24mpg. 28 foot gooseneck behind me on the interstate towing my 11,900 pound farm tractor I average 16-18mpg. Both trucks have plenty of power to get the job done but the diesel will walk off and leave the gas truck on hills. With ease. It’s a beast. Oil change intervals are the same. The cost of maintenance is exactly the same. I do 7500 mile oil change intervals. Hope this helps. Personally. I’d get the diesel. The trucks are designed to outlast the gas trucks 3:1. At least. My neighbor has s diesel with over a million miles. He said the trick to get the million is to akways use OEM brand parts. Ford get ms genuine motorcraft parts. GM gets A/C DELCO. NO EXCEPTIONS.

You can and many people do. The thing you want to do is swap the front end out for a Dana 60. I imagine you are referring to a 90’s 460, if so the 2005+ axle swap is very popular. Do the front and rear for matching wheels. I’m doing the 2004 F350 axles under my 1996 F250 with the 7.3l, the 99-04 suspension isn’t as nice or common to swap but I got a good deal. F250 max 10000GVWR, US DOT regulation starts at 10001 lbs... this is federal irreguardless of what the State law is...so the F250 is a DOT cheater basically....if you are using it for business purposes get the F250 and buy airbags and better tires with the money you saved and have a truck that handles the loads the same as an F350,and won’t be required to stop at weigh stations or be subjected to random and unwarranted pull overs for inspections,unless of course your towing a trailer and then you will either way.

Did you forget to mention they do not share the same Transmission in the 6.2 gas engine? I don't want to watch the video again so I'll assume I missed that. Only the F250 6.2 L has the new lighter Duty G automatic transmission. That's why I went for the F-350 with 6.2L & 4.30 axles on a 2019 order to stick with what I know is tough. In Canada it's near 10 grand cheaper than a diesel. Also I don't know if you can get a 4.30 axle with a diesel? I don't think it would be necessary with all the diesel torque. I have 260,000 k on my 2012 F250 with bi fuel Gas/Propane. At least the 6.2 L is still a tough cast iron block with two spark plugs per cylinder. It has been a solid truck all around.

I AM A HUGE FAN OF THE 1999 MODEL OF THE F-250 SUPERDUTY AND F-350 SUPERDUTY. SO THE SINGLE REAR WHEEL F-350 LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME AS IT'S LITTLE BROTHER THE F-250 3/4 TON TRUCK EXCEPT IT IS A CLASS 3 AND IT IS THE HEAVIEST SINGLE REAR WHEEL TRUCK OF ALL COMPARED TO THE F-150 LIGHT DUTY AND F-250 SUPERDUTY HEAVYDUTY. THE F-SERIES ENDS AT THE F-750 BUT THIS IS ABOUT PICKUP TRUCKS. THE F-450 IS HEAVIER THAN THE F-350 BUT THE F-450 IS A DUALLY NOT A SINGLE REAR WHEEL.

Since when was the Dana 50 a good axle? It's a Dana 60 housing with Dana 44 gears and axles, a huge waste of a perfectly good housing. The twin traction beam axle housing you showed when talking about the Dana 50 was never put in an F350. In those years the F350 still got a solid Dana 60. Also they're definitely not identical the F350 has a heavier frame than an F250. For personal use an F350 does not have to stop at weigh stations nor is it subject to DOT inspections.

If you buy a 3/4 ton truck, versus a 1/2 ton truck, no intention to tow, so what? Stupid remark. He should have said, don’t be that guy that buys a half ton truck to tow with. Otherwise, good video.

Great video,basically the f250 is the DOT cheater....coming In at under or 10000 gvwr ,just under the us dot regulation for commercial vehicles having to pull into weigh stations and being subjected to random pull overs and checks for no reason other than to check your weight , hours or safety of your vehicle. I subbed to you,would appreciate if you could sub me trying to get to 1000 subs ..

Lots of stuff in this video is outdated or just plain wrong ... such as the block differences between 3/4 and 1 ton blocks. They've been the same for several years now. If you want to know the short-list of differences, just go to a Ford forum and do some reading.

So I shoulsnt own a diesel f250 since I never tow anything? Yet I drive 7-14h out to rigs and get way better fuel economy than a 1/2 ton. I also drive through super rugged terrain and sometimes over rivers... Yet I shouldn't own a diesel 3/4 ton? Also have all kinds of heavy tools and equipment in the bed, but because I dont tow I shouldn't have the truck?

Scuba Steve 😂 in society now, not a whole hell of a lot of people tow lots of trailers. They might use it as a truck but they have become more luxury. So honestly it’s not bad to not tow if you have a truck. You can still use it as a work truck.
