Hi Fabi! I just want to say thanks for signing my board in Jamaica today; it made my day. I wasn't able to be there but my mom was. I love your work and am very grateful. Hope to see you win WC next time!

As a female player and viewer, I have to agree with Fabi. If two events are happening at the same time, we are forced to pick and choose and I will end up tunig in to the one with all the big names. I think it has to do with the fact that more male players have active social media presence. They're simply more relatable and exciting. When the events are broadcasted together, we don't have to pick and we get to know the female players better too. This is also why I like Levy's summaries, he covers both sections.
@firebug32564 ай бұрын
Why not just stagger the broadcasts so you can watch both? By simultaneously casting men's and women's events, you're just getting a watered-down view of both. And when women's events are broadcasted independently they're only getting a few hundred to a few thousand viewers usually. Seems weird to hamstring the open section which can easily pull tens of thousands of viewers for a much more unpopular tournament. We don't do that for male tournaments with 2500 rated GMs for obvious reasons, but apparently reason goes out the window because the players are female.
@greatapeadventure5 ай бұрын
Regarding the viewership, I don't watch women's chess because it feels like 2nd league chess. Same with junior vs senior and similar events. We get Fabi Hikaru and Magnus playing each other almost every week of the year at 2800 level of chess. Following a game between players rated 258th vs 312th feels meaningless. Gender has nothing to do with it imo. If women were dominant in the sport and men were playing at 2500 level, I'd be watching exclusively women's chess

I think Alireza is perhaps a bit conscious of his English not being so fluent yet, and avoids long discussions for that reason. But I for one would love to see him do an episode with these guys. I get the impression he's a really fun loving kind of guy who'd be a real hoot to get to know. If anyone in chess has that carefree attitude at the top level, I'd say he's the one.
@arthurritchie58915 ай бұрын
Recently i sat down and watched most of the norway chess event. having both the men and women on at the same time and on the same coverage made it really easy and quite inviting to learn who the top women players are. im not sure that the rating differeance between the womens and the open division really effects the enjoyment for most viewers. i would guess that most chess viewers are at a rating less than 1000. and the way you get them invested is through the storylines and rivalries that occur. cheers boys love the podcast
@firebug32564 ай бұрын
I agree with you that storylines are one important aspect, but I want to see the absolute top tier elites compete. I don't understand people who try to push unpopular ~200 elo lower rated competitions onto viewers just because they're women. You don't see this kind of push to try to get butts in seats to watch male IMs and 2500 rated GMs playing in smaller, weaker tournaments. But apparently because they're women, we must work on increasing viewership to the point that it is at the same level of the male Super GMs. I've also seen a lot of people like you who try to argue "Well, you're rated 650, why do you care if you're watching someone rated 2500 or 2700?" It's the same reason why Major League sports are multi-billion dollar franchises while semi-pro and women's sports are either subsidized or get almost no viewers. Do you think Joe Dirt with his beer gut who can barely throw a spiral takes into account his lack of football skill when he turns on the superbowl? People love to watch the best of the best compete.
@RajAgarwal-pg7kn5 ай бұрын
On the point of viewership, part of it is because of concurrent events.

If I could ask these guys a question, it would be “Why don’t you invest in a fractional share of a jet?” You constantly hear these problem stories of travel. Why not get a few chess players to invest and travel when and where they want? I get that there is a cost, but the peace of mind would seem to be worth it.

St Louis broadcasts aren’t really that good which is probably why they don’t get the viewers. Also separate women and men’s broadcasts are so much better. People just aren’t interested in the comparatively weak chess.

We should promote top Women's chess players, especially for classical events, as they offer a lot when we have two concurrent classical tournaments. Often, at a time when the open division is a 4 or 5 even games with little tension an hour and a half before the time control, the women's section has more spectacle. Then, as we approach the time control and many early-deciding games in the women's section start becoming less interesting, the open section heats up. So we can end up with a better viewer experience without having to do silly things like stagger start times in a larger open event.
