A little story for you guys. About 4 years ago, you channel popped up on my the 14 year old daughter's channels you make like list. After watching 1 of your videos, she decided she wanted a snake. Every Christmas and birthday every year she asked for a snake, with a big hell no from me. Last year, she tried a different approach. She asked me to watch some videos with her. We started with snake discovery. Before to long, with a lot of research, I told her she could get a corn snake. After getting the corn snake, I kept watching more and more videos. Now a year later we have a corn snake, 2 ball pythons and a gecko! My daughter has suffered with auto immune arthritis her entire life. Constant pain, Dr appointments, IV infusions, and chemo therapy type meds that make her feel even worse but are "helping". I firmly believe these reptiles are her support animals. She loves them all. I have also fallen in love with them. Thank you guys for opening my eyes to reptiles!

RE: The Dr. Pepper board: according to some initial research, it seems that some folks say the African Black Wood smells like that. Others say that some woods smell like vanilla or cinnamon. From what else I can see, you may also be smelling sassafrass (OMG I can't believe that's a real thing?! That's what people called me when I was being sassy as a kid.) Apparently, a tree can make a compound called safrole, a volatile compound that is designed to deter insects and is also found in cinnamon, black pepper, cocoa, and nutmeg. Safrole is produced by the tree in order to discourage insect attack, and sassafras has long been used as a natural pesticide. I'm only relaying my understanding of what i've read so I may be way wrong. :)
@CassyBug3 жыл бұрын
A combination of sassafras (used in Root Beer) and Cyanide (Almonds!) Could account for why it smells more like Dr. Pepper instead of Root Beer. Which could mean they've been sniffing poisonous chemicals all day because it smells like soda. Let's face it though, a LOT of wood is treated with weird chemicals.

Could it not only be that wood making the smell but also the heat that is caused by the drill I am now really curious because when I was little my dad was building a pig pen and the wood smelt like Dr. Pepper even outside 😅 and what is funny is that we compared it or I at least did with the Dr. Pepper we brought with us to be out in the heat granted tho the bottled drinks were diet lol anyways still very neat and even cooler channel oh my I'm rambling my bad 😅
@kmaglion Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but there's no way that's any species of hardwood. It's framing lumber, which is basically always spruce, pine, or fir. But the flavoring components for a lot of drinks do come from tree roots, so it's possible for them to wind up in the sapwood too.

The smell of wood can be affected a lot by its environment. Locust smells like Dr. Pepper. There isn't a lot of research into the actual compounds that create the specific smells in wood. But besides the actual tree components Phenyl compounds are another prominent group of odour-active constituents in wood. They occur in wood due to the degradation of lignin. Lignin is a macromolecule which consists of phenolic units and is located in the cell walls of wood

Everyone helping out, be it in person or through Patreon support, are amazing! With every video uploaded I wish I could drive a few states to come help. And I definitely wish I could come to see the shop/zoo/classes once it is open for visitors!

Black lotus smells fruity because the sap rushes up in the spring time from the root ball and it's full of methyl anthranilate, which is a food flavoring additive. It's super sweet and fragrant. The trees grow ultra fast, and a stand of them you can smell that fruity (yes Dr. Peppery) smell. The flowers are actually edible on the tree as well - you can make tea from them, mix them into a dough to make a sweet bread (like banana bread), and the wood is super rot resistant. It's a pretty neat tree.

I know I am late, but I have a suggestion if you aren’t already doing it. What if you put small pamphlets that people could take on the wall next to the reptiles you can buy or adopt. The pamphlets would give you some educational information about the breed or species as well as checklist saying what you would need to take care of the animal(stuff like a thermostat and heater, and also a warning saying there is a risk that the animal might go live).

@@notneal3793 I specifically said the changing table for big kids bc I work with adults that aren’t capable of using a toilet so we end up having to change their diapers on the floor of a public restroom and there’s no dignity in that. All restrooms are required to have handicap accessible. But that doesn’t include those big kids and adults that can’t use a toilet and have to be change don the floor.
