With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Amazing Elizabeth. This video tells you to negotiate but it doesn’t tell you how to negotiate. Here’s how it’s done. First of all every dealer has an allocation of factory orders for each vehicle type they carry. This allocation is reset every month or a quarter depending on the manufacture. The trick to negotiate is to recognize the manufacture incentives provided to the dealers to offset their holding costs. These costs have three forms. First, floor planning assistance which could be up to $700 per car to offset the carrying cost the dealer incurs by holding the car on their lot. Second, advertising assistance which isn’t needed since the car goes directly from the manufacture to the dealer and you pick it up within 72 hours. Third, dealer holdbacks which are additional margin that will go into the dealers pocket for all factory orders. The best way to do this is to remind the dealer of these three areas that they are saving money and have them agree to deliver the car to you at factory invoice.

Thank you for telling us this. Way back when I ordered factory a 1990 Toyota Camry solara V6 with a manual transmission. Initially the dealer told me I could not factory order it. However I wrote a letter to the CEO of Toyota in america. Next thing I know the dealer says how do you want it put together? I wanted a manual transmission, which was in the catalog book, but no dealer had actually purchased such a car. While doing it I ordered a color combination interior and exterior that was not standard. Laughed every time I take it to a new service dealer, and they would go, "How did you get this"? Coming back to present, dealers are again telling me that you can't order a car. I'm glad that you said we could. But I'll wait!

I walked out of the local Chevy dealership because the sales guy did not want me to order a very basic truck with almost no features. I was buying it strictly as a “farm truck”, no cruise control or heated seats etc needed. The sales guy wanted to sell me one of his used rigs SO bad, he was smack talking the ordering process! I bought a used Ford.

I bought my '87 Mustang this way. I went to several dealers with invoice price of my build in hand. Just asked them how much over invoice they needed to order it for me. Most were interested. I bought from the one that only wanted $500 over invoice. Saved almost $3k from MSRP on what (at the time) was a very popular and in demand model. I plan on doing this with my next car.

In my experience car dealers hate doing Factory orders. Give you more time to back out of the deal, and they're at the mercy of the manufacturer that may or may not deliver in a timely matter if at all. Usually they'll try to find a car locally that's close to what you want, and add or subtract options after the fact. Work trucks they are more willing to special order.

As a Sergeant, I often accompany junior soldiers to dealerships in order to keep them grounded so they don't get their emotions carried away, and review their contract with them. 100% agree with everything said in this video. I’m currently on my third factory order. First factory order was a 2008 Saturn aura XR and, true to the Homework Guys advice, it is a one of one Saturn Aura as it was the only Aura ever factory ordered with the trunk mounted spoiler albeit it was delivered in the trunk and dealer installed. Next was a 2012 3500 Chevy express cargo van that was a luxury vehicle from the seats forward and a pure cargo van from the seat backs rearward. No other van I’ve EVER seen is even similar to it down to dealer Installed cast aluminum Chevy wheels. Btw the dealer and I nicknamed the van the “Mark of Excellence Edition” complete with the GM Mark of Excellence badge on each front door. Currently I’m ordering a 2021 3500 GMC SLE 3500 double cab 8’ bed pickup in metallic brown and brown interior relatively loaded with options except for the slt leather seats and stupid 93 way tailgate. There won’t be any trucks around even remotely similar. As for negotiating, the dealer makes the statement that you can’t lock in rebates or financing due to the fact that with a factory order their is literally no vin number or vehicle for you to purchase. You need to wait until the vehicle arrives and then you have something that can be purchased. That said, make you factory order just before the new model year begins. In my case I am ordering a 2021 vehicle just as 2021 vehicle production is winding down and 2022 is ramping up. Ordered in this time frame when the vehicle arrives it will be subject to all the same rebates and financing offers applied to the unsold 2021 vehicles sitting on the dealers lot that the dealer, and most importantly the factory, want desperately to get rid of. Ultimately I’m paying $500. over invoice. That’s invoice, not msrp. I’m not going to be a hard ass for a better deal as I purchase a lot of parts through the parts department via my wholesale account. Speaking of that, if you can buy parts from the dealer at wholesale cost you’re getting the latest revision and technology in a replacement part. Even for our 70,000 mile 1992 GMC Sierra 1500 slt extended cab short bed two tone blue paint scheme I can get factory parts. The parts are head and shoulders above aftermarket in quality and most times made in North America. If you don’t think made in USA or at least North America is important go fuck yourself. The Saturn Aura was literally picked due to 96% North American parts content. America! Fuck ya!

Very good material with thorough explanations found here. I've learned a lot, and despite my local dealer telling me I have to pay MSRP or more for what I want, I've already negotiated a deal in another state for a factory order well under the suggested price. Yesterday the local guy texted me when my preferred vehicle arrived and was promptly sold. (trying to rub it in my face) and I just couldn't restrain myself from texting him back this: "Did you not receive my earlier text? I said I'm not interested in your WRX STI as anyone who has owned one knows they don't make for a good daily driver. I also told you that despite your claims, that I would find someone who would sell me the vehicle I want well below MSRP, and that exactly what I did! It looks like I tried just a little harder than you did to find the deal that I wanted- and it wasn't all that hard"

My son work for Honda Trading North America in Marysville, Ohio. He's in a management position and I don't know if non management gets the same deals but My son can order and drive a new Honda or Acura every year. Here's the great catch is that you're can also pick your options and have it built at the Honda plant where you work or if that plant doesn't have the model you want it's no trouble getting one shipped to that plant. Of course it's like a lease but my son has driven new Acura Sedans for less than $300/month AND you have no limit on the mileage. Drive it 100K in one year and trade it in for another brand new Honda/Acura at no extra cost. After that year you'll see these vehicles on the used car lot of Honda dealerships.

Thanks for the video Kevin and I would love to take a look at that collection of old radio receivers on the shelf behind Maggie. Another aspect of having a factory built vehicle that I like is that I can order it in the spring before the pause in mid summer if there is a factory changeover, that way I know that the vehicle was not exposed to road salt. I will spray the axel and other exposed steel components with black spray paint and clear coat paint. After that is done I schedule an appointment at a place called Krown Rust Control so that way the 5 months of road salt won't destroy my investment. I utilize the Build Your Own Vehicle auto dealer website, and select every component that I want then print it out and take the list to the dealer. We sit together at his computer at the dealer and build the vehicle on his computer and I have never had to put cash down until my vehicle arrives.

Another benefit (at least it was for me last year) is that you can lock-in any manufacturer rebates or discounts present at the time you order it. And then when you take delivery, you can keep those or choose to elect current rebates, etc. at the time you take delivery. That enables you to get the deal locked but you can then change the deal if better rebates or incentives are offered later when you get it.

Great video, but missing a big advantage when ordering- there is no need for dealer holdback on a car that is a factory order. The dealer won’t need to floor plan a vehicle that rolls off the truck right to the customer. If you know how to calculate a manufacturer’s holdback, you can use that in negotiations to get a better deal, well under dealer invoice in some cases. Maybe dealer holdback can be the topic of an upcoming video?

You're absolutely right. I placed an order yesterday, and got a price well below invoice. The truck is exactly to my specifications -- no paying for panoramic moon roofs I don't want -- and at a price better than I've been able to get from any dealer stock. The only downside is the wait, but to get the right vehicle at a great price, it's worth it.

I think the same may happen today. Lead times may be longer than promised, due to high demand and supply chain issues. If I can get 3 to 4 more years out of my current car, I should be able to buy used relatively cheap, due to the high supply of used cars, from current new car sales.

If it's a hot new model or in high demand, smaller dealers my not have any open allocations to order what you want right then and you will have to wait longer for your order to even be placed. High volume dealers are more likely to get more allocations to order vehicles and you can get your custom order in faster. The dealer I'm working with was trying to find a truck with the options I want but because of the chip shortage, inventory is low and this new option I wanted was very hard to find. They had an open order allocation so they said let's just put in an order for what you want and we can still look for one coming in to another dealer so I could get it sooner. Another thing not mentioned is order constraints. Sometimes certain options or configurations can't be ordered or are placed on hold due to parts shortages. This will delay or possibly cause the order to be cancelled if the manufacturer has no information on when they will receive the parts.

Planning to factory order a 2021 RAM 1500 Limited. My cousin works for FCA and will be giving me an employee purchase certificate. Built the vehicle on Ram site and the MSRP was $74590. My cousin ran the build sheet and the cost is $61540. I plan to put at least a $1000 deposit. My cousin even put me in touch with the FCA Regional rep who steered me to a particular dealership and the dealership's principal owner. I am just waiting for tax season to get finished so I am not facing any surprises. Probably looking at ordering in mid-May 2. 2021. My question for you Homework guy, is there a date in which manufacturers do not take orders after?

Sec Amend…. I have not ordered my truck yet. When I wanted to order it in mid- May, Stellantis informed me that the supplier had run out of the black appearance package components. So now I am planning to order a 2022. I am just waiting until the factory begins building them. I am also considering getting the eco-diesel instead of the eTorque hemi. May even go up to the 2500.

@@KevinHunter Yes, I want to order a 2021 Toyota 4Runner limited nightshade edition 2WD in magnetic gray with 3rd row, automatic running boards and a center console safe. I can get the color I want and the safe and the 3rd row no problem but Toyota only installs the Auto running boards on the blizzard white color unless you factory order them on the color you want.

Didn’t know ordering was a viable option. Usually if I see a car I like on a Dealerships website, they either don’t have the right trim or too many add ones that I don’t care to pay for. So if I know the exact features I want and the exact ones I really don’t want to pay for, ordering can actually be a good option and financially sound option (provided I can wait 3 or more months)?
