(Also known as the Radio Lancashire interview)
Recorded 28th February 1980 at Preston Warehouse by Steve Barker from BBC Radio Blackburn.
Broadcasted in March of 1980 & in 1988.
Steve Barker:
"The interview was done late afternoon early evening in the background of the soundcheck at the Preston Warehouse. The interview was for the Spinoff show which went out each Tuesday and Thursday evening on Radio Blackburn (now Radio Lancashire). Obviously its a long time ago and I don't recall much detail other than the fact that Ian was very cooperative and friendly, recognised that Spyda was a non-professional and treated him well. I just sat by their side and held the UHER reel-to-reel portable tape machine. The interview was edited by my producer Ian Cook for later broadcast. I may have the tapes somewhere but cannot locate them easily (I did an interview with Jimi Hendrix in 1967 and lost that cassette!) Ian did not show any signs of disturbance or depression, obviously he was not one of those loud, gregarious people - and seemed very quiet spoken and sensitive, serious about his work".
Thanks to Mark Gale from Joy Division Central who interviewed Steve Barker.
Thanks to SB who shared 1988 broadcast.
Cleaned and mixed by Fage, July 2018.

He was so young, I really think he just needed a few years to come out the other side of his deep depression. I was similarly depressed but my attempts failed and now it’s easier for me to deal with the impulses. Still would rather be dead than alive but I can’t do that to loved ones.

It wasn't just the depression, but the Epilepsy and the side effects from the meds he was taking to try to combat it. A poor tortured soul. I love JD but it also makes me melancholy when I listen to Ian and the band, but it is a good melancholy, if that makes sense. I hope you can continue to see the world in vibrant colors. Take care of yourself my friend.

I completely agree with Ian when he says he cannot like a certain band because there’s things he likes and also doesn’t like about them. I’m the same I say I like a lot of bands but in reality I probably like a handful of there songs.. joy division went on to be a game changer, unknown pleasures is the only perfect album I’ve listened to in my life, every song is special to me. Thank you Ian for creating the most powerful and brilliant music to ever be created!

A articulate, highly intelligent young man. A greater loss to culture even than Cobain or Hendrix, perhaps, because at least we had them for 27 years, and those two great American musicians produced far more material in their almost-as-brief lives than Ian managed to.
