As a former gymnast, the body shaming coming from your own coaches and fellow gymnasts happens more often than people would think. What people don’t tell you is that in order to have energy for your body to perform in optimal shape you need to eat properly, exercise responsibly and have a good sleeping habit. I was too thin for my own good and couldn’t gain weight until way into my 20s and had severe iron deficiency both from genetics and not eating during my most intense training years. She is pure muscle. People body shaming her have a very distorted image of what a professional gymnast should look like.

She's an excellent gymnast and the people that were saying some of the most cruel things about her are people that have no idea how difficult of a sport this is. Gymnastics is far more than being limber and being able to perform gymnastic stunts. Gymnastics involves the ability to control your mind and your emotions. A nervous gymnast is going to make errors and a tired hungry gymnast is going to make mistakes. This woman blossomed into a beautiful young woman and unless she was going to starve herself to continue to compete she did herself a huge favor by going to the NCAA.

I don't quite understand the "but you don't look like a gymnast" comments. I've seen gymnasts with the more triangular shape - broad shoulders and narrower hips but I've also seen a good number of them with bodies more similar to hers. They all tend to have one thing in common, even if not structured the same - thickness (meaning muscle thickness) and she has that, obviously. She definitely LOOKS like a gymnast. Wtf?
@johns7835 жыл бұрын
not so much in the past, though. look back through gymnasts of the past. very rare to see hips or visible fat at all. this is not to say that it's right, but it's certainly the way it was, and largely still is.

Why are you reacting to my comment as if I were one of the body shamers? I don't care one bit how her body is formed. I'm trying to rationalize why anyone would do it. Yes. When I was 12, I began to 'devlop' up top. A LITTLE. I was strongly encouraged, as was my mother, to count every calorie and suddenly I was hyper aware of food (which I LOVE) and began a lifetime of worry about eating on and off. I am a NATURALLY TINY woman. Still, at aged 57, I just have a very delicate look...small bone structure. I ended up quitting ballet altogether at aged 16. I was going to school full time, attending class 5 days a week. Something had to give. I chose to live a normal teenage life and never regretted it. My mom absolutely let ME decide. Years later she said my ballet instructor called her for months yelling at her, saying I was ruining my life 😂 I was captain of our drill/dance team, dating the hunky high school quarterback, partying every weekend (safely). I had a blast! It was the 80's!!! Time of my life....JS. Even though my walls remained covered with posters of Mikhail Baryshnikov 😂😂😂

@Elong.5 жыл бұрын
Arthur Korff it’s a weighed belt used for resistance training. When you take off the belt it’s easier to leap/tumble.

Weight belts and ankle weights are often used on elite athletes training regimen, the purpose is to add weight so that when they do a leap for example they left from the ground stronger and with more power. My son a ms sprinter trains while pulling weights and using ankle weights to do conditioning and he has abs year round.

I shall never forget you Katelyn Ohashi! Not for your amazing role as an excellant and unforgetable gymnist. When I hear your name I shall remember this interview. Your honest and forthright answers to the tough questions regarding body shaming. You gave such wonderful advice on how to overcome when people criticize us. This should be shown in every high school health class. What people say can have so much power if we don't having coping skills. Karen Carpenter died because of it! You truly are a SUPERSTAR!! Great interview by Kristine Leahy and also to the coaches who recognized and taught you how to harness your inner strength and embrace your beautiful body! Oh and GO UCLA! I took my training there in ultrasound!!

" it happens more in everywhere life" "workout untill I felt good enough to sleep" These types of things are something we shouldn't be experiencing from a Young age it's sad,and it truly isn't spoken about but many athletes do have eating disorders we might look fine on the inside but there's so many things going on mentally and not alot of people understand.🗣️

Ashley Esparza My sister used to do 600 sit ups a day in high school because people body shamed her. She also took laxatives to try to lose weight. She’s built more like a linebacker and that was not an acceptable body type for women in the late 80’s. Fortunately our mom found out about the laxatives before she did too much damage, though she’s had a more sensitive digestive system since then. I love how strong my sister is. She moved a full sized fridge out of a second floor apartment by herself. It’s sickening how often strong women like my sister and Katelyn are body shamed because they’re not meant to be bean stalk thin.
