I love that your spotter used the term 'homemade quadcopter' - sounds much less menacing than long-range drone.

Ya I think it softens it a bit in case the person doesn't like drones. Although most of the people we run into think it's interesting for a minute or two and then carry on there way.

I got into the hobby thinking that I was going to be all about the freestyle, but I love that feeling at 0:30 so long range is where I have settled in the hobby. It gives me the same feeling that I used to get back when I played in bands and we were right about to go on stage. It a strange and weirdly addicting feeling of "confident dread"; I'm super confident in my abilities, and my gear, but who knows what could happen to ruin everything and have it all come crumbling down around you. One of the best feelings in the world IMO. Edit: That feeling at 8:25 is exhilarating too. Utter terror, and pure adrenaline.

I've been building and flying 3.5 yrs now. I was inspired by the great freestyle pilots, practicing, watching videos, buying product over and over. I went to Vegas to fly with a youtube personality, raced, etc. At this point I'm over the freestyle hysteria. Freestyle is good for the parts Distributor, smash, rebuild, smash rebuild. Once I discovered FalconRad and his Falcon, I've changed my game. It's all about the sick LR Falcon frame now. Mountain surfing at 5km away is highly more exciting than smashing your build trying to matty flip or invert yaw spin at a bando or at some city park. This Falcon 7 build is the pinnacle of the hobby for me.

@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Ya it was one of the last beautiful warm days of fall. I don't usually turn my antenna to vertical unless I start having control link issues. It fits in my old Taranis case nicely with the antenna attached horizontally. When I go far out I'll set it to vertical though. I always only have one antenna vertical and one horizontal so even if I'm pitched forward 90 degrees or whatever I will never point the null tip of both antennas at myself.

@@FalconRadFPV I figured. I was wearing two layers in September. I hate being cold. Question for my AOS Falcon build on the video side. Going to build the 7 turn helicals for my goggles. Trying to buy SMA pigtails. All I can find are RG316, not RG402. Any reason I can't go with the RG316?
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
After researching about making the antennas it seemed that 402 was the recommended one to use. I'm not actually sure of the differences between them. I think the 402 has better shielding for lower losses. 316 should work as well, it's what the extensions I use are made out of. I use an extension to connect the antenna to the goggles, that way I don't screw an antenna on and off my goggles module every time I fly.
@jimross8983 жыл бұрын
@@FalconRadFPV I think the main difference is the 402 is semi rigid. But it also provides a better signal as you suggest. I watched Xjet's video on making his helicals and his take was, the difference is negligible. So the 316s are on their way with some double sided 1.5 mm board. I have a roll of 14/2 electrical wire I'll use for the elements. Just strip off the insulation. Been wanting to make these for a couple of years now so will be fun to finally do it.

this would be a great search tool for mountain rescue. fly out, watch the footage, rinse and repeat until you find whom you're looking for. much cheaper than helicopters and the recorded image is very clear. is it possible to deploy a radio repeater at 4-5 kilometres out? it could double your range. i'm not sure that's how it works (fly out, drop the repeater on the top, fly back to change to a fresh battery, fly again)
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Cool idea. With drones this size the limiting factor is the battery not the control link range. The max range for my drone is about 10km out and 10km back due to the battery. The control link should be good for double that in perfect conditions.

Awesome! Are you ever worried about crashing way up in the mountains and starting a fire?
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
That is one reason I choose to use li-ion batteries. With a lipo all you need to do is have a branch poke it as you fly by and you have a fireball 1 min later. With li-ion they are put through rigorous testing including including short circuiting the cell, crushing it etc... if any of the tests create a fire the cell fails. They are much safer than a lipo when it come to any fire concerns. Also if you happen to crash and not disarm or something the li-ion battery will sag much more than the lipo rather than spinning the motors till they fry.

Thoughts on getting into long range by starting with the 6s 5" quad that I already have and adding GPS, baro, etc? How noticeable is the difference between 5" quads and 7" quads when flying long range? All of your videos are awesome, btw!
@bluecollarstoner3 жыл бұрын
The controllabilty, wind tolerance, and weight capacity goes up when moving from 5 to 7. I have a 5" low kv (2200 for 4s) freestyle quad and run it on a 4s1p li ion for 12 minutes of mountain flying. 8-10k round trips. Works great, cheap and multipurpose. Though in gusts it's underpowered. Building a 7" so I can run both the 2600 li ion packs I have in parallel. Then move to 21700 cells. Most quads can be modified for long range.
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Well bluecollarstoner covered it well. Ya biggest difference is some added efficiency and the ability to carry much more weight (big batteries along with a full size GoPro). Low kv helps with range or running a 6s setup on 4s (maybe with higher pitch props?) could help with range as well.
@divingfalconfpv46022 жыл бұрын
I have both a long range 5" and long range 7" . I love the 5" being much smaller. Easier to transport. I still get great flight times with a light weight camera. Can cover total trip 12miles. But you put full size gopro and it doesn't fly well and flight times drop a decent amount. Where 7" handles gopro with li-ion no issue. Each has their place. I use 5" when I travel. If running gopro I'll usually run 6s 1300mah and still get way over 10mins flight cruising easy. Use li-ion and go2 if going really far with it. My denver video was my 5" long range. And I have video on what parts are in it

this is a v diff flight i think, the ridges make it really hard to pick an altitude or even rising cruise. i noticed a lot of turbulence over the water falls, its always unexpected that the moving water should mess up the air that much, i think for the final vid i would go for the mountain on the right, go right over the peak and dive over the lake and just get a good eyeball on the los and let the cinematics take care of themselves. then if i had enough juice left i'd climb the extreme ridge back up to the peak i started at. its longish, but if it gets close its an easy cruise n glide back home
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Ya this one is a bit more difficult than most of my flights. That's right, there is always turbulence just above waterfalls. Almost every time I get in real close the quad will wobble a bit because of it. I'll take a look at your suggested flight path next time, LOS to the mountain on the right is quite limited though.

I'll try toning down the sharpening a bit a see what people think. I think I got into the habit of trying to use it to improve detail due to the lower dynamic range on the Hero 6. The dynamic range and shadow details are better on my newer Hero 8 so I probably could drop the extra sharpening that I'm used to doing. Thanks for the input!

What is the best channel and band for long range in 5.8ghz?
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
5645 should get just slightly better penatration than 5905 but I think most antennas aim for 5800 as the center of the range of RF coverage for the antenna. I fly 5790 usually in hopes that the antennas will perform their best. All that said, no matter what the frequency the antennas and the placement of them will be what plays the biggest part in video range when using 5.8g.
@@FalconRadFPV yes, I found this in your another video. Sorry. 246g is too much. Do you try use 5mm carbon instead of 8? Or use titanium screw.

Is it just your left hand that shakes?
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Both I think, I sure notice my left more though since it can make throttle control nearly impossible. When I first started long range I crashed my first long range quad trying to land because my hands were shaking too much. Now usually after one or two flights I'll be all good.
@MrJasonodonnell3 жыл бұрын
@@FalconRadFPV Interesting, I had the same degree of shaking for a good year mostly on my left (throttle side) causing serious loss of control - I am Right Handed, "but" as a musician (25years) my Left hand is totally dominant. I put it down to excitement and false stress (or real flight stress) affecting the creative parts of my mind which in turn affected my left side. Your the first bloke I've seen shake as bad as me.

Is this iNAV or betaflight? Impressive. Even landed with tons of battery left.

Betaflight still.

@@FalconRadFPV I might go back to betaflight. I keep having compass calibration issues. So no rth. And with dji I don't have a compass to see it working a head of time. And never know if when I look thru phone if phone compass messed with it at all

Thank God , i'm not alone who take off and run a couple meters with shaking hand.
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
No you're not alone with that. Given a quad isn't really important like a pet dog or cat, but we all put a lot of learning and work and hope into our quad builds. So risking losing the awesome thing you worked so hard to build, can be quite intimidating. My very first long range flight I crashed when I tried to land (the third attempt) because my hand was shaking so much I couldn't control the quad at all.

Ok one question what is the clicking sound through the hole video??? If I had to geuss sounds like a dog itching his collar lol also that’s so sketchy to have someone walk up like that out in the middle of no where l. Is one of my fears that’s why I don’t long range unless I have a spotter with me
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
I think the clicking was a grasshopper, so make that sound as they fly. I know what you mean about having no one there. A couple of times I've come out into the mountains to fly by myself and there always a little voice in my head reminding me that I've seen a grizzly bear in this valley before.

@@FalconRadFPV I’d be more sketchy for a human to walk up on me than a bear lol

You are really shaky in your thumbs i know that feeling when you are 4km away, but have you tried pinch?
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
I have tried pinching a few times but I think I'm so used to video games from back as a kid that thumbs just feels right.

She has my old EV800D goggles. With two helical antennas. The EV800D work as goggles as well as a screen to hold in your hands.
