I still enjoy watching your videos because I am moving out on my own after my break up and buying a house with 5 acres and I'm going to start a hobby farm myself as well as animal rescue.... Currently I have 11 cats, 3 dogs, a female goat, 12 rabbits, 3 guinea pigs, 4 snakes, 4 lizards, 8 turtles, a cockroach, 9 mice, a rat, and a parakeet.... I had 6 chickens, 7 geese, 2 ducks, a male goat and a mini horse, but I had to rehome them due to me moving from Oregon back to my home town In Missouri...

@@The10AcreWoods Hello Tara, Tonya here. If I may ask a stupid question, if you do not like the winters, why are you living in Canada & how long have you guys lived there. I love your videos & the animals. Also, have you every used horse main & tail shampoo, conditioner, & detangler on Daisys main? I used to use it on my own hair, works great. By the way Tara, you did a good job on sealing up the buildings.
@The10AcreWoods5 жыл бұрын
@@tonyahoover5162 RIGHT!, I often ask that question of myself. The winters are time to self-check and bond with all of those around us. More family time animals in tight quarters allow you to get to know them differently. Winter is me time for learning, crafting and Mark likes it because I cook more in the winter, baking etc. I was born and raised in Canada. Yes we use Main-N-Tail, even my daughter has tried it on her hair. The buildings are quite cozy when closed in, I feel better when they are all tucked in for the winter.
@tonyahoover51625 жыл бұрын
@@The10AcreWoods That's good because I would feel better also. Keep up the good work. I am originally from Cincinnati, OH where they get at least a foot sometimes, 2 or more feet of snow, it really sucked when your vehicle got frozen to the ground. One of the years, I would live to meet you, Mark, & all your animals, especially your black pig, she's cute. I am an animal lover.

Would wood chips help with the mud?
@The10AcreWoods5 жыл бұрын
No, it would then be muddy wood chips. The mud is there primarily because of all the rain we recently had. Most farms in the area still have alot of there pasture flooded, we are lucky as only the area around the shelter is wet, the rest of the 10 acres is in good shape.

There is sutch thing as a Miniature potbelly pig they are about the size of a cat my mom had to of them
@The10AcreWoods5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. Miniature pot bellied pigs are anywhere from 40 to 60 pounds and are born through selective breeding of small pigs. Lucy, our miniature Pygmy goat, is quite a bit smaller but we don't breed her as there can be complications with breeding smaller animals. We have never run across a miniature pig breed.
@The10AcreWoods5 жыл бұрын
Tara here - The smallest we know of are the American Mini, then the Juliane painted pig, then the Kune Kune, then the pot belly all between 60- 150 lbs if fed a proper diet.
@Oztinfrog5 жыл бұрын
@@The10AcreWoods yah I was surprised the first time I saw them they were like baby's but they were over a year old when we got them and stayed that small . I'm not sure how they are bread I think it might be like dwarfism . We kept them as house pets . They were Potty trained . Also looking back on it I'm sure its probably not exactly healthy to purposely breed a pig that small .🤷🏼♂️

I absolutely love everything about you guys! Your farm reminds me so much of one I used to go to growing up. How did you get started with the refuge? Who was the first surrender that you guys took in? Did it snowball quickly from there or did it take a long time for you all to grow to being self-sustainable in terms of donations? Thank you for all that you do! Link to my childhood local animal refuge :) insiderlouisville.com/lifestyle_culture/henrys-ark-has-served-as-an-animal-refuge-for-more-than-25-years/

Thank You Tara here - We started as a hobby farma nd then were asked in 2006 to take in a load of animals from a farm in Ontario(the owner had passed) a semi load showed up and bang we were officially a rescue. Slowly and carefully you do not want to get overwhelmed and have to be prepared to get er done if you need to. In 2016 we opened up for donations and soon after I was able to stay home, but it took a lot of networking over the years, Our biggest asset is that I can make something out of scrap, collecting and storing for when needed. It saves 90% of costs, we also do all our own labor and build everything ourselves so huge savings. The donations from visitors help of course but being creative more so, our classes help. We are 18 years in the making and biggest piece of advice is to learn to trade, collect inventory and trade, also by helping others they will help when you need it. Karma is real. Hugs and Thank you for Watching and sharing - when your ready ask all the questions you need, follow your dreams.
