The siege and fall of Constantinople occurred in April 1204 and marked the culmination of the Fourth Crusade. Crusader armies captured, looted, and destroyed parts of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. After the capture of the city, the Latin Empire (Frankokratia or the Latin Occupation) was established and Baldwin of Flanders was crowned Emperor Baldwin I of Constantinople in the Hagia Sophia.

There is around 250 years between 1204 and 1453. But if you are thoroughly corrupted, no one can save you even in 500 years. Late Roman Emperors were incredibly corrupted.
@Muramasa1794

TheCastleConqueror actually no in that they had competent emperors such as Basil II, John Komnenos and John Tzimiskies. Before the fourth Crusade they had the wealth still and were in process to reclaim Anatolia. Once they lost Constantinople and most of their possessions in Greece that was a severe blow to the Roman state. Even though decades later they reconquered the capital and other territories they were never able to recover the strength and wealth before the Fourth Crusade.

In my opinion, this evenement was cleary worse than the fall of Constantinople in 1453. I'm Muslim but the way whose Franks attacked the city was really digusting .You can understand that a lot of battles aren't religion wars .Moreover, it's crazy to think that they was Christians but were more violent than Ottomans, Arabs,Slavs,Turks and even caused more problems than Mongol.

1:02 (on onwards) "civil unrest between romans and latins"... The sentence makes perfectly sense from an eastern point of wiew, but seems very weird for a western reader (where "latin" and "roman" are nearly always synonyms). I am currently reading Anna Comnenos' "Alexiad" and another surprising confusion appears as she used indiscriminaly the terms "franks", "latins", "celts" and "normans" in order to design the same group of people.

@elbentos7803
@elbentos7803 4 жыл бұрын
Nesan Holo This is a bit more complex issue : - Anna used the term franks, because the largest contingent came from the kingdom of the franks (the name old french give themselves at the time). - celts, because Anna, being quite a classical erudite, assimilated people coming from medieval France to gauls. - latins because 1) the vast majority of crusaders spoke a latin-derived language (old french, occitan or old italian), and 2) all crusaders, being catholics, used latin lithurgy during masses (that set them a part from greek speaking orthodox eastern romans). - norman was only lineage denomination : in 1099, normans had nothing more in common with their (extremely minimal at this point) norse ancestors - a frequent but highly absurd trope. At this time, normans were simply either french (Robert Courteheuse) or italians (Bohemond, Tancred). Really, no viking involved.

@@williemherbert1456 Source that their nobles considered themselves as Scandinavian? There is no evidence. First the Nobles were mostly Frankish by 1066 and second the evidence on the tapestry of bayeux indicates that the Normans called themselves as Franci (French or frank) while Angli is used to denominate the Angles or English. In fact the only time they used the term Normanni (Norman) is when they are referring to either Normandy as a region or the Duke of the region as Norman duke. There is no indication they considered themselves as Scandinavians. To start with the the Norse migrants never displaced the Frankish elites there. They simply intermarried and only the most important Norse became nobles and Rollo became a duke. Most became peasants or soldiers and assimilated into the general population. the Normans being Norsemen is a silly confusion by those who doesn't know history.

1204 Sack of Constantinople was 100% the reason of Eastern empire's downfall. They abandoned the only reason Europe didn't become Arab/Muslim for a millennia just because they were too butthurt with the Byzantines for being Orthodox, speak Greek instead of Latin, being more sophisticated (Theophanu Sklerena taught King Otto's German people how to use cutlery and bath every day) and honestly, being the actual legacy of Ancient Greek and Rome.Not to mention the unholy part that the Church played, in both West and East.
