As Starfield season picks up, I want to dive back into the BGS games of yore. I originally didn't plan on posting a video or even talking much about my latest playthrough of Fallout 3. What else is there to say? Well, I discovered a few new things and suddenly I found that spark to go for it one more time. Is Fallout 3 worth your time in 2023? Duh, but maybe you want to know what changed for me this playthrough. Let's dive in.

Not just the graphics but the mechanical elements as well. In both 3rd and 1st person shooter type games people have just come to expect a certain level of quality. It can be a very high barrier to entry when the difference is so immediate, not to mention console players dont have any means for improving the games performance on their end. Hoping this game gets a worthy remake/ remaster to bring a lot of quality of life improvements to this game.

Fallout 3 is weirdly beautiful, that I do agree. Something about the dull colors, broken buildings, wind blowing and steel creaking... The feeling of being lonely truly never goes away. Sometimes I take a moment to sit down in the game and just look and listen to a world burned by atomic fire. New Vegas might have the gameplay, but 3 will forever have the atmosphere to me.

You know after looking at Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I’ve noticed that one of the main things that Fallout 3 does better is really imitate the emotional family feeling(for the main story) from the first two games. F1 really hits you in the heart when the protagonist was kicked out of the vault, F2 really gets emotional around the village elders death, & F3 with father‘s death & the sacrifice ending(The final part is not perfect but still the ending slideshow really does put a tear in my eye. Especially when the camera moves toward the family photo). F4 does the same thing. NV is great when it comes to the branch of choices but there isn’t much emotional attachment in the main story. It feels like the emotional content is reserved for some of the side quests and companions.
@jonahulichny9874
@jonahulichny9874 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get what you mean. new Vegas’s main story elements are about which faction is best for the mohave. It speaks to the players head. By contrast 3, and the other 2 fallouts, focus on pulling the players heart strings with their respective emotional moments, such as dad dying in 3.

Absolutely agreed, one of Fallout 3's greatest strengths is just all the neat little stories you find dotted around in otherwise unnotable locations. New Vegas has a ton of locations but I don't recall to many times where I just stumbled into one and found a unique story all tied into just one place. In FO3 I find it all the time. Just a few days ago I explored the nuka cola factory for the first time and got the little task to take the clear formula to the red racer factory, and then when I went into the red racer factory a whole new wild story is just sitting in there. Legit, do yourself a favor and explore that place.

@@GoatBoat22 I don't play modern games much, so it's hard to say. Without Bethesda, my gaming hours would be in days, instead of years. Baldurs gate, maybe. Alien Logic, that's before your time, I played that for about 70 hours. Ring of Darkness on the Dragon 32, that was a time sink. But Fallout 3 was the first complete obsession. Maybe Morrowind but it was less intense. I know it's fashionable to trash talk, but in reality they are popular in the absence of much else. That interaction with the robot in the McClellan Family Townhome is actually a reference to the short story, There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury. I started a "100 percent" playthrough recently, and yep, even after a decade you can often find a few new places in FO3. That said, it definitely feels a little more empty than the very first playthrough. The open world becomes a bit vacuous, the looting gets redundant, and some of the questing is a bit simple. Something I feel NV and FO4 did well was create a more connected world, perhaps that was intentionally disjointed in FO3. You may get a little reference about the Republic of Dave and Rivet City, but they are ultimately never part of the same world. They're little islands. Which is great for the storytelling and tone of the game. A lot of stuff you can miss, or just not pay close attention to, and it doesn't detract from your enjoyment. Finding extra tucked away things in DC or that far away mega colony of ants is still cool. Some of the extreme ends of the map were still new to me (getting to Raven Rock was funny). It's ultimately a game set up for one really long playthrough, though, because nothing particularly changes. Things are only new once. I've completed everything in the main world space aside from the main quest, and I'm doing the DLCs before running the game to its natural end. I agree, modding really won't change much, and it's a pain to get working anymore. Fallout 3 is a great game, great story, great world building, and was incredibly fun. That said, it has definitely begun to show its age, and I will likely never pick it up again. A few quests still glitch, Enclave aren't mysterious when they show up before actually progressing the main story, and if you've played most of the game before...well, you've played most of the content already. On the other hand, it has inspired me to try, for the millionth time, to thoroughly mod and play Skyrim to completion, and not just 20 hours like I've done 3 times now and given up. I'm hoping ES offers an equally rewarding world, storytelling, and honest moments. I'm looking forward to new games too, even if it takes years for publishers to get them right.

This video made me reinstall FO3 for the first time in a few years (probably before 76s launch). Its been 2 days and i already have 12000 caps and im level 14, lol. Crazy how after all these years, i remember SO much of this game and can mix/max my productivity like this so well, and yet im still noticing new things after hundreds and hundreds of hours. Even hearing a bunch of ambient dialogue i hadnt heard before. I Missed this.

I remember the first time I saw this announced in a gaming magazine. Sat in high school going over the pages over and over again (in my head thinking how much i loved oblivion so this should be amazing) this was and is one of my absolute favourite games of all time! No game since has made me feel anything remotely close to how this game had me feel! The world had me captured and can still capture me for hours and hours, as you said, ALWAYS coming across something new!

My brother in law randomly brought this home. I think I was maybe 15, I had experience with Oblivion but not nearly enough. He never played this kinda game before. When I left his house I was hooked with no understanding of what this is and how it's supposed to play. I just remembered watching him blow up megaton. When I got the game myself, I struggled for a while but I kept on it. Running from super mutants constantly. Those bastards looked like boss encounters to me. My "moment" only came once I got some metal armor a nail board and got tired of running from those bastards. The rest is gun-slinging, smooth talking history...

I love fallout 3 quest and also another pro was once you finish the main story it just continues afterwards . The one thing I hated about new Vegas is if you finish the main mission at the end of it , it cuts you off there and your forced to load back to a old save . You can’t progress after the water-dam sequence.

Something I love about Fallout 3 that I never see mentioned is that to me feels like you can have a job in the world other than a wandering mercenary. There are so many npcs that pay for particular items that you can make a lot money scavenging for these people. You can also be evil and recruit people for Paradise Falls. And you can do these jobs in a way that suits what you want to do and doesn't get in the way of anything else.

On my first play through back in January of 2009 I remember sneaking around in some building north of the dc ruins, I heard heavy foot steps and slowly walked up the stairs only to come face to face with a giant green monster, my first super mutant, I still hadn't figure out the vats system and I basically just panicked as the super mutant crush me with his sledgehammer. It was awesomely terrifying and thrilling, I was hooked from that moment forward. Totally still love this game all these years later❤️

I replayed it recently after many many years. I was kinda nervous cause I thought it would be a case where the game has aged poorly. But I came to find my initial love for the game was still there. And yes it does outshine fallout new Vegas and 4 imo. Fallout 3 to me has the best atmosphere and art style of the series. It looks more realistic than the later games, which to me immerses me more. The other games look like cartoons in comparison. And fallout 3 has so so many memorable moments. Leaving the vault, entering megaton, tenpenny tower, three dog etc. Fallout 4 I can barely remember, and new Vegas is kind of similar to me.

F3 is my favourite, always will be, but I have been spoiled by the concept of survival mode, having to eat, sleep and drink really makes the experience for me and adds that realism, it’s the only reason I haven’t touched my Fallout 3 on Xbox for years, because it’s hard to get immersed in a world where you don’t need to survive.

It’d be great if you did a video that explored fallout 3 through an existentialist lens. That scene you stumbled upon in which the Mr. Handy read a poem to the now deceased child. An entire video could be dedicated to such a happenstance: we bear witness (or at least a glimpse) to an authentic (or possibly an inauthentic) display of humanity in a universe that is very much absurd.

Fallout 3 has good and bad factions and choices, New Vegas shows that morality is relative and that everything is shades of grey. I don’t think one is above the other tbh. Both are fantastic games. Awesome video matty.
