Take one look at Onix’s stats and typing, and it becomes glaringly obvious that it was designed as a tutorial boss first and a party member second. Those Tackles and Scratches that’ve seen you through up until the Pewter Gym? Worthless on it. Bubble or Vine Whip, though? Boulder Badge is already yours.
@borbafatt5 ай бұрын
I see people say this all the time but honestly, the logic just isn’t there. Onyx is so vulnerable because of how bad its special is, that even a resisted move like ember still does decent damage. And bubble and vine whip one shot every time. They could’ve easily gave onyx decent to good HP/attack stats and it wouldn’t have made the first gym battle any more difficult.
@smonkk85565 ай бұрын
@@borbafattsure, but its a very basic knowledge check. even to get the okay damage from ember, you need to understand that physical and special damage are different and some pokemon may be physical walls but have middling special bulk. you overcome its defenses through special attacks and bypass the tutorial through using supereffective moves

@@borbafatt it would have been really punishing to Charmander kids. My big theory is that I think it's a bit of both. They wanted a really cool boss pokemon for the first gym and Onix worked on terms of typing and design, so they have it wack stats

@@AllanaRace it’s not punishing at all for Charmander. Neither Geodude nor Onyx have any rock or ground type moves. They have tackle and bide. And because both of their special is so low even though it’s resisted, ember still can easily take down onyx in just a few hits.

No it's Brock's spirit animal. It's a rock snake because Brock is always thinking with his excited trouser worm. It has low hp because Brock is a creep but not a big creep and easily shooed away, it has low attack because Brock is a creep but he's mostly harmless about it, it has huge defense because Brock is content in his creep ways and won't change, it has terrible special because Brock is a himbo with little imagination (so dumb he accidentally is genius sometimes but also oblivious to his own shame), and it has decent speed because Brock loves his "jelly donuts" but still works out and is healthy. Edit: and Steelix is the successful version because all Brock needed to do was wear some protection. Like wearing a frying pan as a drying pan. Onix was good in LC because that kind of thing is cute when you're little.

So, a small side note of Steelix, in pokèmon GO PVP, there was a brief period of time where Steelix was top 5 in both the great and ultra league, it got access to breaking swipe a few updates ago and single handedly got breaking swipe nerfed to only have a chance of lowering the opponents attack, so it was insanely bulky and would just get bulkier every few attacks, as a result, Breaking Swipe got nerfed, dropping Steelix's ranking, but it also caused master league meta pokèmon like Haxorus and Rayquaza to get nerfed too due to also having Breaking Swipe, idk who thought it was a good idea to give it breaking swipe, but I despise them for ruining my boi's Rayquaza and Haxorus

Mega Steelix in gen 7 UU is quite a fun story. Some of the stuff was mentioned in the video, but some big reasons it was also used were: -Latias was super oppressive with Elec-Z complimenting either it's dragon STAB or a boltbeam combination, this move shredded they daylights out of steels that weren't Mega Steelix. Its other niches over Aggron were notable, but this alone pretty much made it *better* than Mega Aggron on most teams. -It was genuinely more offensively threatening than Mega Aggron, it could do more damage to Latias and more importantly, it's Gyro Ball made it actually able to chunk Taunt Roost Hydreigon without a niche move, as Mega Aggron's Heavy Slam did surprisingly pitiful damage to the hefty hydra. They also mentioned the Curse set being able to handle Scizor, something primarily possible through it's stab EQ doing crazy boosted damage to even bulky Scizors. -It was also used in an early gen 7 UU meta that briefly unleashed Xurkitree, as it was one of the only things that resisted electric while not getting diced by either HP Ice or Energy Ball. Mega Steelix started off the gen as "Mega Aggron with a niche electric immunity" (As most common electrics did massive damage to it with fire moves) but ended the tier as Mega Aggron's superior because Mega Aggron just couldn't dice it against the dragons and Scizor punishing it for not running Fire Punch all day every day.

Breaking Swipe worked great on glass cannons but on something that could already take 3 back to back cross chops from a Machamp became over bearing to the point that breaking swipe itself was nerfed solely because Steelix was so dominant.

Onix and Steelix should get buffs to the attack, while Onix should get a pre-evolved form. Seeing that thing in Little Cup feels wrong to me.

Absolutely love these pokemon. Glad to see they mostly had such a good time! I still play a lot of GSC to use steelix

Onix was my first favorite pokemon that I remember cus I thought this massive rock snake had such an awesome design. The day my friends said it had an evolution I was in disbelieve . I rarely use Steelix nowadays, but I still love that design and wish Mega Steelix just ended up being a standard evolution.

Onix and Steelix are my favorite pokemon line. I was kinda nervous, since I knew how bad it was in gen 1, but I'm glad that great is the correct word for it now.

Onyx and Steelix REALLY need stat increase in HP, Attack and SP. Defense. like 20 point in each stat, and only then it might be more competent

Pokémon Ranger’s iteration of Steelix is surprisingly tricky to tackle. Unlike most Pokémon in this trilogy, this thing can hurt you just by touching it with your Styler, on top of being large and hard to draw loops around. Spin-off bosses often don’t get a lot of appreciation on account of the games themselves, receiving the same treatment, and many players have said they didn’t have problems with Ranger Steelix at all. The important part either way is that spin-off games have special ways of making lesser appreciated Pokémon more memorable. It feels weird calling Steelix underappreciated, but either way how stacked the Steel-Type’s roster is nowadays, it kind of is.

Steelix AND Samurott enjoyer? Hell yeah (but dude no need to spam it every video, wait a few years so Hisui has more time to do stuff)

Steelix is still one my favorite looking Pokemon. PLA showed us how menacing wild Steelix looks. Yeah, mostly everyone hates trade item evolutions. Aggron replaced Steelix as soon as my Gen 3 adventure started.

Steelix was one of the coolest things introduced in Gen 2 hands down.

Always very fun hearing FSG talk about Gen 7 UU. If anyone watching feels like trying out the metagame, it has a RoA Spotlight ladder on Showdown right now. We Gen 7 UU fans are eating good right now

I had NO CLUE Onix's base stats were THAT bad, and that it increased that much in evolution. With such an imposing look and a big role in the anime, why would Onix have 45 attack??

I’d love to see a remake video of Bisharp again, with Kingambit and LC Pawniard. Awesome video.
