DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent. I just like examining popular tournament formats.

@@lordpyron3934 It could also have made it a decent choice scarf user, as it could've outsped some slower offensive Pokemon as well. Scrappy Specs with Boomburst (what you click 95% of the time) with Focus Blast, H-Pump ans Fire Blast has been a legit set even in the higher tiers funnily enough. No defensive utility, bad speed, but it breaks open the metagame like nobody else can (H-Pump/Focus Blast for Ttar, Focus Blast for Heatran, either Focus or Fire Blast for Ferro etc, this thing has an option for every potential normal resist, and every non resist gets blasted by an effective 210 BP move (unless you play soundproof Kommo-O)

One of my personal favs from Gen3 (Singles) competitively speaking has always been Breloom, this guy always found a way to overcome bad stats with an interesting combination of abilities and moves, and experienced literally only a half a tier drop from OU to UUBL in its entire existence when Tapu Bulu came to existence.
@skeetermania3202
@skeetermania3202 2 жыл бұрын
@@tehrik0020 Why Bulu specifically?
@tehrik0020
@tehrik0020 2 жыл бұрын
@@skeetermania3202 Bulu has pretty much the same physically offensive power (both in strength and typing since it has CC as well) on a much higher bulk with less setup requirements, the only thing Breloom still has going for it is its signature Technician Mach Punch and Spore, but Bulu overall brings more utility and immediate usefulness. It's also worth noting that there was no viable physical grass mon except Breloom until Gen7 came in with two of them, and the prominent Terrain presence caused by the Tapus gave Breloom a lot of problems with its usual setup pattern, since it needs at least two turns to set up Spore and SD. Even in these conditions Breloom was considered too strong for UU, and so it went to UUBL after years of being an OU mon.

@sephikong8323

One thing to say : 140 BP STAB move with no immunity coming from a 91 Base SpA stat whilst having perfect coverage for every resist Compare that to swellow's 140 BP STAB move coming from a 50 (now 70) base SpA and almost no coverage. Granted, Swellow is much faster, but basically: Swellow is better at ripping offensive teams apart, Exploud can break any defensive core open
@sailorhatguy5763
@sailorhatguy5763 2 жыл бұрын
@@sephikong8323 I agree that Exploud absolutely crushes defensive teams and that he's supposed to take out one pokemon before going down but it feels like a liability when it comes to building a team around it or when using it in battle because of how slow it is compared to Swellow who can do it's job very decently in most situation idk how I'll fix that issue tbh but I like the idea of choosing a Pokemon that is specialized in destroying some teams vs choosing a Pokemon that is generally good against every team so I just suggested a change with it's stats for more offensive oomph
@sephikong8323
@sephikong8323 2 жыл бұрын
@@sailorhatguy5763 Just making it stronger wouldn't fix anything tbh, it would just mean that instead of doing 101.5-112% it would do 120-129.5% to opposing Pokemon. The best way to "help" Exploud would be,idk, to make sound it's own separate type and make Exploud and a few other Sound type ? Though it would also no longer benefit from Scrappy so ..... I would keep your eyes on Exploud for the next wee while, since Bronzong has now left NU (in yesterday's tier shifts) and there are few things left that can check it so reliably, as they have no way of sponging its coverage moves like Bronzong can. I doubt this change would make it broken enough to get banned again but it will certainly be even more dangerous in NU, right now.

I'm a big fan of sound based abilities in fictional fights, and I love the attention Pokemon gives to that with how many moves and Pokemon specialize in that. One Pokemon who does this that I would love to see covered on this series is Kommo-o. Sun and Moon's Psuedo Legendary. I love this thing's concept. An armored warrior dragon that hits its own scales to make sound waves, and those waves that can both attack enemies and buff its own stats. I remember Kommo-o being really weak with very few options when it first appeared, but Gamefreak kept buffing it with new moves in every game. I'd be very interested in seeing its competitive journey, even if it's only from the previous Gen. I've heard nowadays it's better in SIngles than it is in Doubles, but I haven't delved deep enough to know for sure, or for what reasons. Maybe SIngles just values its bulk, dangerous setup-options, and Stealth Rock access more than Doubles values its stab spread attacks.

Big fan of Kommo-o, it's my favorite pseudo. I don't know much about gen 8 competitive, but I'm glad Game Freak has buffed it. It was very clearly the worst pseudo legendary back then lol.

while I agree the kommo-o would be an interesting pokemon, given that its only been around for 2 generations, if feels like a waste to make an episode on it now, since most of its competitive history is more of recent history than not, in addition, they've said explicitly in various places that gen 6+ mons are currently off the table since there's not a lot to cover and it'd be weird to do mons from gen 6 or later when they haven't even done all the fully evolved gen 1 mons

Yeah, Kommo-o is one of my favorite pokemon because it has so many fun sets. Substitute + Belly Drum with Soundproof is amazing for countering roar and other sound moves that would usually counter substitute, just like Exploud did in Gen 2. You can also use a Clanging Scales + Throat spray set to get a +1 boost to all your stats except special attack which gets +2. You can also use the signature Z move and get an omniboost while doing big damage. You can also use a bulky set with stealth rock and take advantage of Kommo-os solid defenses. There's just so many things Kommo-o can do, and it's good at all of them.

Fun fact, in gen 3 there was an unused ability called Cacophony that was believed to be associated with Exploud and its evolutionary line, it was functionally identical to Soundproof. It isn't really known why the ability was left unused since there were other identical abilities such as pure power and huge power, cloud nine and airlock (and others introduced later such as moldbreaker, turboblaze, and terravolt; also protean and libero). It was removed from gen 4 onwards.

Even Rock, Ice, Bug, Dark, and Ghost perform better.

Bug while hitting three types super effectively, is pretty bad offensively. Alongside Grass, it is the most resisted type, resisted by 39% of the types in the game. Grass is even more useful due to being one of the two types that hits Water super effectively. Exploud has a colorful move-pool; Fire coverage, Ice coverage, Water coverage, yet all it needed was a super strong STAB move (and a Ghost busting ability) to bring it to prominence. And when Boomburst got added, it had another sound based Normal move much stronger than Hyper Voice. But yeah, various other normal types surpass it: Tauros, Blissey, Snorlax, Miltank, Ursaring, and of course Slaking (if you don’t take Truant into consideration). It’s a shame.
