Chalamet was almost perfect casting for Paul Atreides. Only people who didn't read the books and expected a typical action hero, or those who can't stand him for whatever reason, complained about him. A 100% book accurate actor for Paul would need to be younger and smaller physically.

Paul is supposed to be 16, he’s a kid, but at the end of the book he’s 19 and he’s been rugged and sharpened by the rough Arrakis lifestyle. He’s a leader. Honestly Tim looks like a bag of bones, he was only cast on his fame and supposed acting chops.

The fremen lifestyle makes him even thinner and as time goes by some fremen remark he has "less water" in his flesh. When the Emperor saw Feyd Rautha and Paul face to face, he noticed how different they looked. Feyd was the typical muscular warrior, but Paul was "a stringy whipcord of a youth" whose ribs you could easily count. Anyways, the films compress the timeline to make everything happen in the span of months, not years. So any remarkable physical transformation would have been unrealistic.

The difficult thing for the filmmakers is that over the course of the story Paul noticeably ages, going from a late bloomer to fully bloomed. So, do you cast someone that looks more like Paul at the beginning or more like Paul at the end? You can't have it both ways, unless you film over the course of years, or use Captain America style CGI to change his body type, both of those pose problems of their own. I don't like Chalamet, personally, but I must admit he's a decent middle ground for both phases of Paul. Height of a man but body of a boy. I'd be happy to never see him in anything else, but he's well cast as Paul.

@@alexanderforbes1452 Actually you can easily have the best of both worlds in this case as there is a long period between films. Tom Hanks did it with a one year break in the filming of Cast Away. From when he passes out after doing ice skate dental surgery to when we see him next spearing a fish he had radically changed his physique. Of course I do not think Chalamet is the type of actor who would willingly lose his soft exterior so that the Paul we see after a couple years in the desert would be lean, rough, and tough. For a middle of the road compromise I agree he is a good choice.

This is despite the fact that in the books, Paul Atreides's physical appearance is described as somewhat similar to Timothee Chalamet's physical appearance. Not entirely like Chalamet, but the description in the books is similar enough to Chalamet. So out of respect for the films accurately representing parts of the source material, I have to completely disagree with you on your assessment of Timothee. Appearance wise, Timothee was a pretty good choice for the lead role.
