David Reece Many rich people who wouldn't know one end of a paintbrush from the other would pay millions for a Van Gogh. But mention that he may have been gay and they go ballistic. That said, human sexuality is quite intractable and should not be seen solely as a black or white matter. Like so-called monogamy - WHICH IS NOT A FACT OF LIFE BUT MERELY AN ASPIRATION - human sexuality is very fluid and is known to go with the flow according to circumstance (in a spiritual sense if not the physical sense). As the video says, sexual orientation is not of great importance. It is the person and what s/he does that matters.

You are quite right in general, Aldo, yet in at least two cases you are not. Leonardo was homosexual and his affairs with gentlemen are known. He left Tuscany for fear of scandal and was welcomed by French king Francis I. As a matter of gratitude, he later donated Monna Lisa to the sovereign (so, Monna Lisa being kept in the Louvre is perfectly fair). As for the other huge genius of Renaissance (the third but not least Raphael cannot be included in this list), wrote passionate, furious love poems to a gentleman. Yet, I don't really see the point of writing such a list: in 2019 only a perfect idiot could consider homosexuality a disease or a sin, so why listi illustrious (actual or "suspected to be") gays?

Jules Verne wasn’t gay. That’s not a value statement, that’s just fact. Videos full of conjecture do more to harm the cause than help it. There are plenty of worthwhile examples left off this video. Research, research ... and the research some more. The truth will set us all free.

Van Gogh, the son of a preacher, he had been a theology student and lay preacher before turning to art. His medical biographers agree that his adulthood included periods of hypersexuality, hyposexuality, bisexuality, and homosexuality. His stormy homosexual affair with the painter Paul Gauguin included endless, often argumentative discussions; Gauguin's memoirs describe his difficulty in terminating such conversations, indicating van Gogh's tendency toward "stickiness." The affair culminated in the painter's famous self-amputation: during a heated argument, a voice in his ear whispered, "Kill him," so he attacked Gauguin with a razor; then, suddenly realizing his rashness and recalling the Biblical injunction, "And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out," he turned the blade against his own ear, which had offended him. This event conflates three of Geschwind's traits: hyper-religiosity, "changed" sexual behavior, and aggression. A similar incident resulted in van Gogh's suicide: he threatened his physician with a pistol, was rebuffed, left the office, and shot himself in the chest. He died two days later.

Olivier had what he called a 'romantic relationship' with a man but it was not a sexual one. This would probably be called a 'bromance' now, they're not that unusual. If you're going to count Olivier as 'gay' then you broaden the scope to the ridiculous.

Depends how you define gay or sexual orientation. If you emphasize psychological leanings then behavior does not necessarily tell you what's present in the mind. Having sex with someone doesn't tell you how the person is feeling or thinking. People can perform what they don't really want. He was an actor, he could probably do all sorts of things he didn't really feel. I suspect his true homosexuality is in part what drove Vivien Leigh over the edge. Joan is a whole different story.

There only circumstantial historical evidence that some of these people were gay or possibly bisexual but not proven beyond doubt at all - as for the rest yes they were well documented but if you are going to post something like this get your facts right and not post something like it is the academic and historical truth when that is not at all the case with many of these people - it sounds to me like you posted what you personally would like to believe rather than do proper academic research

Rock Hudson, homosexuality has been very well documented in several biographies of gay men. It is difficult to make a video like this, and add all the source material used in research. I have been working on a video project with historical references. We need to divide a video like this into sections, those individuals that were openly gay in their lifetime, and those that were rumored to be gay. And those that were outed due to legal issues surrounding homosexuality.

Gay - straight ... what does it matter? Look at who a person is, not what they are. That should tell you all you need to know.
@jpiccone15 жыл бұрын
It mattes because the title of the video is "Famous Gays in History". And it most certainly does matter beyond that - being gay results in a much different life experience and perspective than being straight. It doesn't matter to one's value as a person, but I don't think anyone is arguing otherwise.
