I was at a Mariners vs Dodgers game and a Mariners fan cost the team a double or even a triple by reaching down and picking up the ball. He was kicked out while other fans booed as he was escorted out. Fans should know the rules too.

@@MitchellStone-or6bf The height of how much the fans glove was over both the wall and the fielders glove trumps the fact of the fan being in play. Hell even when the fan was catching the ball he pulled the glove back a little. There's no way the player was going to catch even without the fan there mainly because of how much he was able to get above the wall and how back the ball actually was. The fan barely touched the player and that was when the ball hit his glove.

It's called Newton's 3rd law of motion... The ball isn't going to drop straight down. It also appears to glance off the fielder's glove on the way down. Second... I agree with genesispuredeaf2390. Also, look at the fan’s waist, it’s pressed against the yellow top of the fence. Further evidence that he’s leaning over the field of play to some extent in order to get the ball to hit (the heel of) his glove. On the plus side for him, at least he uses two hands. 😆. On the minus side, he misjudged it. Not that I could have done any better. 😄. I think the umpires made the correct call. Sorry, Colorado fans! I’m a Padre fan. I know how it feels. 😆 The fan’s “punishment” for this foul deed in fair territory should be to have to serve time down on the field in left field during batting practice until he can make 100 catches… … while wearing a clown costume. 🤣🤣

Reminds me of game 4(?) of the 2018 ALCS when Altuve hit a similar ball to RF. A fan interfered with Mookie Betts making the catch, but it was even less likely the fan reached onto the field, and less likely the fielder would have caught. Umps called it fan interference and an out. If replay review existed at the time it probably would have been overturned. This play was so similar, very hard to tell if the fan reached over the wall, very hard to say that the fielder would been able to make the catch, the result is a HR taken away from the home team by a home team fan.

Dude is leaning on the rail. The yellow line is part of the field of play. Dylan Moore's glove is catching that man's arm. If the fan wasn't there, Moore makes the catch. Sucks for the fan who was trying to catch a game winning home run. Moore didn't get the chance to make a highlight play. The Rockies still won though, so at least the fan was able to live to see another day!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's interference cause he 'reached' onto... The second ruling you stated said 'without reaching' onto field of play... You even put emphasis on the 'without' but he clearly still reached. The spectator also 'prevented' the fielder from catching and unlike the 2nd part, the spectator has to 'come in contact' like by not taking action and getting hit I assume. Field of Play - Per baseball rules academy: Rule 2 Sec 42 "..Any wall, fence, barricade, rope, wire, marked or imaginary line is considered a part of the playing field. Any areas beyond those boundaries are outside the playing field."

The umpires’ job is to nullify the act. It is not an out just because it’s interference. The replay official judged that, without the fan, the fielder would have caught the ball in the field of play. That’s why it’s an out. So, actually the batter had something to do with hitting a ball exactly deep enough that it would go over the fence-except the fielder catches it. (Except the fan got in the way)

You can't award the home team a HR when one of its fans interferes with a ball that had a possibility of being played. @MwD676
@MwD676 2 ай бұрын
Minus the fan, the ball may actually have been caught by LF. It is difficult to determine if the touch is over the field of play. The top of the fence is technically in play, but “no interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence” is also in the rule book. So, the fan reaches over the field. But touches it right at the boundary. He prevents the fielder from making a play. But, that potential play would have been over the fence. (Not sure that he clearly catches it.) Wish we (and the replay officials) could see a view from the side to determine position and trajectory of the ball.
