One fan game no one ever talks about is Zelda Classic. Recreates Zelda 1 but adds a multitude of enhancement options for custom quests. Has its own quest editor, kind of like a Zelda Maker. Look into it!

A few more recommendations: Streets Of Rage Remake is everything all 3 of the games were and more. All of the levels, all of the endings, all the characters, and a whole bunch to unlock. Castlevania The Lecarde Chronicles was so good, the VA for Alucard reprised his role for the sequel, which was also good, but goddamn is it hard Castlevania: Simon's Destiny is a fps remake of Casltevania one, powerups, enemies, and dickishness intact. But it's amazing, so long as you remember the hidden meat. Psycho Waluigi is a game that takes it's own spin on the Mario formula, and runs with it, playing as a psychic Waluigi in a platformer. And last but not least: Super Smash Bros Crusade is even better than Super Smash Flash 2 in my opinion, with a full roster of characters, unlockable characters, multiple forms, and an amazing soundtrack to boot

I’d like to pitch in my own personal favorite-Fire Emblem: The Sacred War, AKA one of the greatest ROM hacks I have ever played in my life. Aside from being significantly harder than the original Sacred Stones (which, while not as piss-easy as some might say, is still pretty easy to trivialize if you know what you’re doing), The Sacred War has some of the most extraordinary map design I’ve ever seen. Where most games in the series often rely on stat inflation to create difficulty, then force you to bunch up all your units into one space to mob the enemy, The Sacred War harkens back to FE4 with larger maps and multiple objectives and incentives that encourage you to split up your forces and conquer them all separately. In fact, I’d say it’s better map design than just about *any* FE game sans maybe FE4 and FE5. It also revamps the class system, making it much more balanced. Classes have fixed weapon levels, meaning that certain classes won’t be able to use certain weapons at all (for instance, the Druid’s Staff rank is C, meaning it can’t use the Fortify staff in this hack.) It also gives each class a certain skill. The effects of each class skill vary from class to class-for instance, the Wyvern Knight has Pierce, which, aside from its functionality in the normal game, allows it to use the Storm Spear weapon. Meanwhile, the Wyvern Lord has the Nestmaster ability, which (among other things) allows WLs to take advantage of terrain effects despite being a flying unit. This gives every class a unique purpose (and never one so niche you’ll never use it!), and makes the game truly feel at least somewhat balanced without making all units essentially the same. Some units are still worse than others, but almost none of them felt like they were dragging down my team. Another great change was the alteration to critical hits. Crits have had their power nerfed down to 2x damage instead of 3x, but in exchange they’re much more common. (It’s actually possible to have a unit get a 100% crit rate without cheats or the Stone/Hammerne glitch!) This makes critical-reliant characters much more viable than they were in the base game. It also adds a ton of incredible endgame content that I found myself spending a massive amount of time on because it was sooooo GOOD. While the early levels of the game were fairly easy, the endgame Rift dungeons were insanely challenging. Holy fuck is this hack good. Play it. All of you. Yes, even those of you who don’t like Fire Emblem. FUCKING PLAY IT.

A really interesting one to look into is Sonic Robo Blast 2. Technically it's a mod for Doom but it's a 3D Sonic game running on the Doom engine. It's been in development for 20 years and still gets updated. It's not finished but the amount of mods for it, including a Kart racer, could fill a video.

I'd recommend SRB2 and it's companion fan game (yep, a fan game of a fan game) SRB2Kart and Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch All 3 run off of the modified DOOM Legacy engine and I enjoy all of them SRB2 is basically a sprite based 3D sonic game akin to the Adventure series SRB2Kart is a racing game using the same assets as SRB2 and a really enjoyable time with a pretty dedicated modding community and online playerbase Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch is a 1st person shooter where you can play in arenas themed after stages from Mega Man 1 and you can play as Robot Masters from 1-10, although they all use the Mega Buster as a default weapon until they find special weapons in the arena They are all really fun and superbly crafted fangames that I highly recommend

Haven't watched the video all the way through yet. But as far as fan games go, this morning I finished the Sonic run of Sonic 3 A.I.R (Angel Island Revisited), which is a remaster of Sonic 3 & Knucles, and with the more recent updates, the physics finally feel 99% correct, there are a few hiccups, but that is understandable. And I am also playing through AM2R, and I had been following the project off and on since 2006/2007, and I am glad to say that it was 100% worth the wait.

Wow, this was a great list. I gotta thank you for helping me discover Pokemon Uranium and Mega Man maker. You TOTALLY gotta make a part two of this and talk about Streets of Rage Remake though. That game is the best fan game I've ever played or probably ever will play. It took 11 years to develop and Sega tried to take it down just as it was being finished. After all that work it was devastating that it might all come crashing down wasting all their effort but the public outcry was enormous and Sega ultimately backed down.

The biggest complaint I have of Pokemon Uranium is that all he pokemon feel like they have tons of attack power and very little defense. You can have wild pokemon 15 levels below yours hit for half your health with a single attack. I do like the concept of uranium type pokemon and the weird twist for that pokemon type.

If you ever do a second part, i recommend Sonic Robo Blast 2, its a doom legacy mod that is honestly the best representation of 3d sonic, with coop, race and even deathmatch modes and a thriving modding community
