In defense of double kneepads, some people (myself included) really do need them. I would shot leading with either leg and the issue wasn't the mat burn. The problem was the impact. I had chronic runner's knee for years before I even stepped on the mat, then after just the first month of practices I could shoot more than a handful of times without immense pain. While I could have just focused on one side during a match, that was a no-go during practice since we all had to drill with both legs.

I use the Tornado headgear because that’s the one I got in 7th grade and I’ve been using it ever since. I’m in 10th grade now and I still use it. The headgear you wear doesn’t mean jack shit. A real way to spot a newbie is his stance before the match begins and how he warms up

I think an abundance of visible fat is one for me. I wrestle 140 and 152, so most of my opponents are very tall and muscular. However, I will sometimes come across a guy that’s kind of short and fat. I see this as a guy whose mom or dad is making them wrestle, and therefore have a lack of commitment.
@Mocha- Жыл бұрын
I wrestle 225 and 285 (heavyweight) and I personally have a fair amount of visible fat. and I am a relatively good wrestler. Obviously this is far more common for the really big dudes but just my opinion.

My brother Ed, who wrestled for Canon Mac in the 60s, would give the fish handshake once or twice a season to an opponent he never saw before. He would act wimpy, then hit the guy with a blast double when the whistle blew. The surprised look on the opponent was always comical. So beware - the newbie action may be a psych job. good stuff guys
@FancoWrestling5 жыл бұрын
🤣 That's hilarious. Mind games are huge in wrestling. We had a guy on our team who shook hands with his left hand to throw guys off. And it worked. Btw, Brendan and I both wrestled for Canon-McMillan, so it's great to have you watching. Thanks for the support!

That was my M.O. as well. At weigh-ins, roll my shoulders forward to look like I had a sunken chest and a wimpy handshake before the whistle, then light em up. It works until everyone knows who you are.

@@michaelwernett504 Right, once they experienced it, you couldn't do it again to the same guy. My brother Ed also did the sunken chest - weak handshake and coughed. Funny - you two thought alike.

One knee pad(right knee just because of having it drained so much), Aisic(special ordered Gable edition) wrestling shoes, squeezing knuckles together so hard that they nearly break when hand shaking prior to the whistle, cliff keen headgear(or none @ all when wrestling in any/all Greco/Freestyle tourneys...plus Cliff Keen even makes Tornados...sadly a lot of the rookies on my HS team had them, constantly cutting peoples ears up when sparring. Eventually, ALL of our state qualifiers made it known that they weren’t going to wear that shit anymore during practice lol. Never had a college teammate wear Tornados, but wrestled against others who wore them often), regular socks(double stripped) up high, singlet high, triple smack to face from either older sibling/father, and one of about maybe 3-4 old hardcore metal/rap song playing in the CD Player, and warmed up just enough that nearly ever vein is showing & blood is pumping. My old traditions from memory from HS & Collegiate Wrestling(I’m sure I’m forgetting a few). And my personal opinion was the “hand shake”. 99% of the time, when that hand shake is weak, they’re weak. However, I had a teammate that would do this on purpose & reach his hand out over top hanging it their like a female to see his opponents response. And literally lightly shake his opponents fingers w/ the most psychotic smile. It was priceless! He was 4 time SC 4A State Champion & Player Collegiate Football for Clemson. Given, I don’t think he started doing this until his Senior year. Too funny 🤣
