The price of electricity is set by the regulator, who deem that the highest cost of generation is the benchmark. Namely burning natural gas. 47% of England’s electricity comes from burning gas. 1% of Scotland’s electricity comes from burning gas. 99% of Scotland’s electricity is from renewable sources, onshore wind, hydro power, offshore wind, pump storage hydro and solar. Why do Scottish consumers have the highest bills in Europe. Simple, because England deems it so.

Bringing down energy bills is a fantasy. Private Equity,Asset Management companies who effectively own all of our utilities, it's not in their or their investors'interest to bring down or cap energy bills. The same goes for commodities like grain and milk. They used to invest heavily in commercial property,but residential property investment is where they are now ploughing money . They control the amount of houses being built therefore control of the market and prices. You'll hear from past and present governments that to increase our housing stock we need private investment ? Asset managers and their clients need to control the supply to keep profits and returns high. You also heard Rishi Sunak talk about issuing more drilling licences to maintain our energy security ? Oil extracted from the North Sea is exported overseas and we buy it back at global market prices. The UK owns virtually nothing as a result of Margaret Thatcher's privatisation policies and continued by Blair.

The problem is that UK prices for energy do not make sense. Scotland, which has more renewables, at present, than any other part of the UK, and therefore uses less gas for example, pays more per Kwh than other parts of the UK. See Octopus energy calculation which shows that adapting electricity prices to the actual costs, at the most granular level, so for example for each substation, which is easily possible, would end up saving the UK about £15 -20 billion per year because usage would reflect actual costs.
@TonyWelch75Ай бұрын

Answer: "The Regulator allows us to say that". Even if its not technically correct, I would say we are all being 'Gas lighted'.
@r2drone227Ай бұрын
GB energy own nothing, they produce no energy and they have no control over pricing. Labour energy policy will cost at least 100,000 jobs over the next 5 years and rely heavily on imported products that will cost us even more. There will also be the distinct possibility of blackouts as the use of gas and oil is reduced. This is only going to push bills up, not down. Lack of guaranteed energy will also put big business off investing in the UK. £300 per year off energy bills but costing billions of gdp doesn’t sound like a very good idea to me. I’ll sit back and watch this huge waste of time, money and energy (forgive the pun) fail!

My own humble opinion is that GB Energy is nothing more than a token appeasement to Scotland to be based in Aberdeen while the vast majority of Scottish renewables energy production is stealthily and slowly fed into the suddenly improving grid for use in millions of homes and businesses down South. Profiteering by France via TotalEnergies, with even China and Thailand benefitting in their involvement with SSE projects. Fabrication of windfarm bases in China- small platforms to hold the wind towers fabricated in Indonesia and UAE. Motors for the wind propellors made in Germany, Installation of the subsea cables from Scotland down to England by European marine companies, albeit Scotland does get token benefits of some work on the building of the onshore connection points directing power down south and storage of components arriving in Scotland from elsewhere, they will have small constant workforce looking after those onshore stations once the cables are up and running and renewable energy is connected to the grid. Also a smallish cable manufacturing set up via a Japanese company. The failure over many years was not having a suitable grid connectivity set up in Scotland and back up energy storage as it was not urgent enough and of no benefit to Westminster but now that extra power will become available from Scotland offshore to England the Grid is being upgraded. So many Scottish onshore windfarms were effectively switched off in the past as they over produced , couldn't connect to the UK National Grid and there was also no where to store the power while it was being generated. (plans are now in place to build battery storage areas but are slow to get approval or indeed they get rejected by out of touch Councillors). Maggie stole and misused the oil revenues from Offshore Scotland to balance the books and Westminster is now openly and happily stealing the renewables benefits. Scottish residents will still pay over the odds for energy produced on its doorstep which should be cheaper but never will be as long as Westminster keeps control of the energy assets of Scotland. The two reps being questioned who can't supply specific details smack of the same issue we had with covid style miracle companies (we can make those for you! never mind checking the specifics) . If you can't provide even conceptual ideas and basic budgets with targets of aims then it is a recipe for budgetary waste and no doubt mismanagement and disappointment for many going forward. Check out details as follows:- costs of execution to date. Costs to execute until all parts are up and working, cost of benefits to Scotland specifically and Benefits to Westminster coffers and profits to foreign companies. That would be an interesting and hopefully detailed read. Benefit to private companies I would suggest would exceed the benefit to the public in Scotland and we will still have higher fuel bills than they should be!

! Raise the point about the energy companies profits that have trebled, they can afford to bring them down but won't there to greedy

Gotchas.... If they had just said "No but that is an aspiration" then that would have been accurate although still lacking in information. But they didnt want to say "No". They would rather waffle for 5 minutes in order to try to say "there is no way of knowing at this stage" than keep it short, sharp and to the point.

Lets catch a grip. Energy companies making 900% profit, they should be allowed 10% and the savings passed on to the public. Energy needs to be natrionalised as EDF was in France where the UK still subsidises France through profits from the UK.

Here in Scotland some of us call Stephen Flynn the Hitman because he's a sharpshooter with his questions.

What a farce.

Flynn and the SNP are not on myChristmas Card list, but he is absolutely correct to ask for straight answers from this character. Is it male or female or somewhere in between? Disgusting that it cannot decide what it is before appearing in such an august meeting. Why give credence to such characters?

We have come to the point where congratulations are in order for an MP to individually question a bill instead of waving it through.
