In this video of Sons of The Forest, I moved bases due to hard survival being very difficult during winter without a water source. Though it works out, because I find a better place to build.

About the pond freezing over, it would make sense to me that you should be able to use the axe to break the ice and get at the water beneath.

Dang brah that's solid, MAYBE they could also make an ice storage that could be a makeshift freezer like olden days, or even an underground one if they ever pop off digging mechanics

problem is the ice system is basically they shoved an ice texture over the water. if it worked like real ice then there would be a lot of performance problems. i feel like we need a sledgehammer for building with stones btw.

I'd love for it to *feel* like a survival game, as opposed to a zombie horde simulator in most areas. Playing Peaceful for example, but cold matters, hunger matters, food and animals are scarce. I'm going through the settings trying to find the best fit for a solo island survival playthrough.

Farket, you can put pots on a fire and get another pot. i got ~6 pots at my base currently. you can also put them in the shelve

@@asherhargis-roycroft933 I've gotten 2 creepy armors off the ones that are only slightly different and tankier than the normal dudes, I tend to have more trouble with the twins than those ones and the twins are 2 mutants in one so why not 2 creepy armors?

@@Gardolind personally i find the glowing blue puffies tougher than twins because they have more health do more damage are faster and have a way harder to learn attack pattern twins attack pattern is so easy

@Farket from my testing recently the npcs clipping through walls seems "almost" consistently fixed. What I've found is that after you get past the draw distance, the npcs don't see obstacles just like we don't aka no walls. (I ran far way and then used free cam to test it multiple times)

This is where me and a mate have built and I adore it. Running water, fish, and easily defendable. Plus, it's not far from a 3d printer and pictereque. I love this spot.

You can store pots of water on the shelf etc, but true, you can only hold one at a time. You could have stored them for the winter before the lake froze over. You can also have multiple homes, no need to move your base.

I love this base location. Animals are plentiful and you're near so many great supplies (like the 3d printer cave). I built my base right at the lake/pond in normal and hard mode. Now I have it just above the camp in hard survival.

This is exactly where I built. Great site! I built on other side of creek and when pond froze built it overhanging cliff. Zip line down too. Fish in creek. Great site.

There's a can opener I found where you spawn in at the beach near the rocks where you also find the cereal boxes, ropes, and duct tapes. I don't know if that is always there or randomly spawns there but if it helps you, try looking there.

The back of the glider is long. Use hotkeys and stash it when climbing, take it out when ready to jump.

Looks like a great spot! We built our cabin in the middle of the lake that has 4 rivers feeding into it, to the west of the mountain, in the winter time and it's so far been a superb place. The only time we're woken up is during the winter, and not too often. There's the rivers right there and it's semi central to a lot of things.

@Farket from my experience enemies spawn in a certain distance from the player. So if you have a large base footprint it's possible for them to spawn inside your base.

In my base there are also 3 points of entry, but I realised if you keep 2 of them fully sealed off and one open, the enemies always run around my whole base to go to the one entrance instead of breaking down walls. makes it an easy choke point for traps n stuff

Yup, I'm always in charge for constructing the killing floor. With a good entrance, you can easily power up many weapons in a row with any attacking mutants getting absolutely demolished before being able to get through the traps. Also, if these Spider mutants come, they get drawn to sound - having that one radio trap will make them get aggro on it. Build 2 spin traps right in front of it, and these fast mutants will run straight into their death without heavily damaging surrounding traps.

The very first thing I build with my first rope is a bow. The aiming sucks at first, especially with stone arrows, but you get used to it pretty quick. I don't even think about aiming anymore. But fighting cannibals in the early game with a bow, compared to using melee weapons, is a night-and-day difference. A single headshot to an unarmored cannibal will kill it. The big "leader" cannibals die after several repeated headshots, and each time you hit them in the head, they will momentarily be stunned and fall to the ground, allowing one to two axe hits to the head. I highly recommend making a bow and some arrows. If you can't find birds to kill, just build a couple birdhouses in your base. FYI, the explosion sound you heard was due to those propane tanks you can find at some camps. The campers used them for portable stoves/hotplates. If you jostle them around enough times, hit them, or loose objects roll into them (like logs), they will detonate like a grenade.

Much better than last episode. To be fair, I did enjoy an entire episode of you going absolute ham on cannibals. In The Forest, it was possible through consistent nonviolent behavior (the person I watched wielded a stick with a cloth on it) to sort of train the cannibals to not attack you. The video I watched, she just picked a point where she couldn't get approached from behind, and whenever cannibals came, all she did was look at them and block attacks. I dunno if it's possible to reduce hostility in this game, but if it is, maybe consider a go through where you train the cannibals to not hunt you? Be interesting to see both extremes of the aggression bar, from "never stops attacking" to "never bothers you".

There is a small island to the left half of the map, has a big body of water around it but it you position some posts just right, you can form a bridge to take you from the main land to the island, so during the summer months they cannot attack your base (unless they know how to cross a bridge now). Build some defences around the small island so during winter you are also protected. For water, there is a waterfall very close by, set up a single zipline and you have all the water you need. I built there in the first few days of playing, never once had an issue at my base. The bridge isn't defended during the winter months, but you can build defences on the ice on either side of it for safe travel. Easily the best location i've seen.

I was so hyped about this game.. bought a new pc in the same period that this game released. Played for some hours but i got so bored when i had to play solo. This game is way better when you play co-op. I miss old days when i had lots of friends that played The forest 1st game together

21:12 I think I know what that was. There's little camper stoves in some of the camps. You can't use them to cook food however, they will explode if they are jostled too much. Often animals will run into them and cause them to explode sometimes killing them. Cannibals and the player too though with the player it only happens typically if you attack it. Also it could be they are still utilizing enemy patrol routes in SotF which is why you get attacked in some places more than others.

I have only been playing this game a couple weeks. My base at fang lake froze over so I just put up a couple zip lines to streams close by. As long as you eat AFTER you drink all damage is healed.

The cave entrance to the golden armour cave is a great place to build. U will get water 365 days. And it is very easy to defence . Start building during winter is a better time.

I'm pretty sure you can leave a full pot on a shelf. Then go get another pot from the camp site. You can leave them full of soups for later use.

So I have this mod menu for the game, and it allows you spawn in all items in the game files, which include unreleased items, so here is some items coming to the game as far as I know: -Spring (Prob for crafting only) -Airgun (AR) -Sleeping Bag -Airgun Scope -Battery Charger -Climbing Axe (Prob in a new cave they make) -Laser Pointer (maybe on a 4th purple icon on the gps) -Food Tray (similar to cooking pot) -Contact trigger (prob for pistol) -Blue Shirt Some of these do work, like the sleeping bag, and blue shirt but the rest has missing textures and stuff

tip for those laffy taffy slinky monsters, if u stun them then quick swap to a time bomb, great way to deal with them. 2 timebombs max to take em out, sometimes only 1

I think you can find multiple pots you can fill and stow on shelves. But you can only carry one at a time so if you know where the pots spawn and don’t mind making multiple trips surviving the winter could be easy.

they've added hot springs in the snowy areas, i usually build by the river. water don't freeze. in fact i've been building on almost every pond in the game

For that exact reason, the best place to build is the never freezing pond near that modern axe spot. Build some simple platforms as a bridge at first and make your home in the middle of the lake. Enemies will drown trying to get to you.

I get what you mean about constant attacks. sometimes they just keep coming for seemingly no reason. I feel like its a bug sometimes. btw idk if you know but water collectors during winter are pointless since any water in it freezes just like ponds. so its better to build near a river so that you can get water from them.

The Greg recipe being so easy to make plus having Kelvin does help quite a bit with the building in this game. Wonder if there will be more features added to the game to speed up building or not.

Farket, Another awesome video! Just one thing I saw that might make things easier for you. The issue with placing the spikes and the spacing due to the game wanting you to use "stick fence" spacing.... If you ever run into an issue where you want to place a new stick somewhere you cant, finish the other spikes so that the game no longer registers them as sticks, but rather as spikes. That removes the snap point, and many times you can place the new stick for a spike either right where you want it, or very close. There are still some weird spacing issues, but id say that this method fixes about 75% of them. Cheers!
