When I fasted for 16 plus hours a day, in a belief that it was a must for being healthy, I really struggled with stress an anxiety. Eating a keto diet for that period (over a full year) certaintly didn't help and my sleep was trash.. right until I reintroduced carbs and I sleps like a baby..

Nice, Everyone's body is a little different than others, and everyone needs to learn about their body to keep it positive and healthy individually, some can keto, some can't. Some tolerate wheat, some don't, etc.

I think fasting can help you get into a meditative and contemplative state when combined with other meditative techniques, there is a reason so many religions have fasts. I fast for 25 hours (no food or water) on Yom Kippur and I find that when combined with the repetitive chanting and singing of the prayers over many hours I get into a meditative introspective state looking inwards rather than thinking of the physical. This doesn't happen if I only fast without the communal prayers, and it happens much much less without the fasting (e.g. on Rosh Hashanah when you say similar prayers)

Fasting works fine for me when i want to lose weight. Some people would rather cut clories by eating smaller meals, but that doesnt work right for me as I feel more hungry through the day. So, i cut calories by fasting 16 hours a day, and occasionaly doing longer fasts, and feel fine that way.

Unfortunately, you DO need to debunk this… 🤦🏼‍♀️ I once had a patient who was convinced that if they fasted long enough, it would kill all their cancer cells. I explained that starvation would affect ALL his cells, not just the cancerous ones, and no, a 21 day fast is not recommended. They kept saying that they knew I couldn’t “officially” condone it, *wink wink*, but for some reason still thought I was giving them the secret go-ahead nurse signal. No matter how many times I tried to tell them in no uncertain terms I would never recommend that to anybody and that fasting that long would kill them, they refused to listen because they’d rather believe ding-bats like that oaf.
@Kroitk

I always believed that too, but a strange anecdotal occurrence happened to a family friend of my father's. We was diagnosed with a form of cancer and was given 3-5 months left, him being in his late 40s. He didn't want to do chemotherapy and instead, realizing he had not meant options, fasted heavily. Long story short, it's been 6 years now and he is cancer free, and has lab results of before and after, showing the cancerous cells in one and free from them in the second. I do not know how or why, but the proof even had doctors unsure how this happened. I was shocked so I looked up online and found a number of people sharing a similar story. As someone who believes in the scientific method, we shouldn't discount real empirical evidence in front of our eyes, and we need to study this more because people are literally alive right now that were written off.

@@Kroitk This is the problem when people use "science" to dismiss things that go against what is currently known, as if the information we have now is the final say. How this video really should go is determining whether fasting is associated with higher self reports of spiritual views or experiences, and it's worth pointing out that hallucinations are strongly correlated with what are considered spiritual experiences, especially in the context of psychedelics. I've had enough times where a nagging injury from lifting or overstraining went away permanently after fasting for a couple of days that I can confidently say that this is pretty likely to occur again.

@Melesniannon
@Melesniannon Жыл бұрын
@@VegetaPrinceOfSaiyans Yeah, hallucinations are strongly correlated with what are considered spiritual experiences. One wonders why. Could it be that they're all just that: hallucinations? Naaaah, too obvious. And in the context of psychedelics, when it's incontrovertibly established they're tripping balls, you think they somehow gain access to a spiritual realm? If you want to explore that nonsense scientifically, explain why these "spiritual" experiences aren't consistent or coherent, and unable to produce any predictable results in reality. It's a simple fact that people who hallucinate, make up stories about it. As for "injuries" (more likely just DOMS from the description) from lifting or overstraining vanishing after a few days... yeah, that's how your body works. It's called "healing", and it occurs naturally all the time. Protip: it also works when you eat. If you were actually injured, you'd be healing for a lot longer but you think you've stumbled upon a miracle 'cause you have some muscle soreness :D. But thanks for the completely non-scientific anecdote, just too bad there's no evidence for fasting assisting in any healing process.

24 days were the longest I have accompanied a person closely during an extended fast. Always supplement with micronutrients (Sodium, Potassium, and Magnesium) + an "A-to-Zinc" multi-vitamin/minerals. He was obese, and on this extended fast, he lost almost 18 kg. Now we do see it's interesting to supplement protein ("not-fast"). But still, what's the problem with extended fasts? ( if accompanied by a professional even better ) A 3-day liquid "fast" (with or without aminos/protein) is a blissful thing, man. There's a loss of muscle, yes. (Yeah. Yes) Still, it's a solid proved way to attain intercellular autophagy. And just to add a little note, daily intermittent fasting, in the sweet spot of 18 hours, there's a blissful moment of pure well-being and even a sense of "spirituality" or whatever one wants to call it. I associate it with a burst of neurotransmitters/feel-good hormones. It's pretty common and reported in some studies. Of course, with all that said, YES, THERE'S MUSCLE LOSS in the process (Yeah, yes). And the dude he is reacting to is oblivious and over the top, surely. I just wanted to sprinkle a little divergence as food for thought. It's indeed magnificent to fast, especially after more than a decade of studies and practice. When you "don't fast" by adding aminos/protein to reduce muscle loss, which indeed happens even more in low body fat subjects, one do see benefits in emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Always open for inquiry. I hope this is received wholesomely. Peace ✌🏼

In case anybody reading this doesn’t know why that’s a problem: “Cachexia [aka “wasting syndrome”] is estimated to occur in up to 80% of people with advanced cancer, depending on the cancer type and how well they respond to cancer treatment. And it’s thought to directly cause up to 30% of cancer deaths, often because of heart or respiratory failure related to muscle loss.” www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/research/cachexia So yes, in some cases carbs and fat do feed the cancer cells. But they also feed the rest of you that needs to recover between treatments.

@@limitisillusion7 this is only bad information. You like others provide no details for analysis. "Fasting" for one hour? For one day? For one month? Or for one year? Not all cancer the same. When not fasting, was the person eating extra? Other medications? See, lots of nuances. This is the problem with these types of comments and the internet. A small amount of information is significantly more dangerous than no info. Not all fasting is actually "fasting". Not all cancer the same......all data from American cancer society shows life expectancy is better with support of a doctor vs those trying only fasting and internet "solutions".

My longest water fast was 7 days (it was just over actually because I slept at the beginning and the end, 175 hours). The last 2 days were agony. Constant headache, hunger and nervous energy. Towards the end of day 7 I even got disoriented. That said, days 3, 4 and 5 were actually pretty good - I went for long walks and felt great the whole time. Not sure what the bro is on about, but I can see how messed up you'd get after your body starts eating its own organs to get by. So, yeah... He was experiencing his brain cells dying for sure. Must be trippy as hell. FYI, I wouldn't recommend anybody to fast for longer than 2 days. Absolutely no point. Fasting can be a good strategy for people who enjoy large meals and don't do well with calorie restriction but don't mind fasting (I am like that). You eat on a surplus most days, and fit some fasting to make up for the extra calories you took in. It is probably not optimal for muscle growth though, so keep that in mind (it is not easy to work out HARD when you are fasting, at least for me). As far as a mental/will power/discipline exercise... Do something else, don't fuck with your food just because you want a challenge. It's the other way around. If it makes you feel good, do it. Otherwise just don't. And have a good relationship with your certified, real, professional doctor.

You'd be surprised what the human brain is capable of. No one can explain consciousness, yet all our observations are dependent on that consciousness. There are absolutely some altered states of consciousness that can be induced that can change your entire view of reality in minutes. It's very difficult to believe this stuff if you've never experienced it. Put it this way, the quantum physicists are too afraid to admit it because they don't understand everything yet, and there's a lot of push back by the current paradigm. But spirituality is getting closer and closer aligning with science. That doesn't mean any particular religion is right, but more so that the people that started these religions knew stuff we didn't. There wisdom was lost though, and religions turned into ways to control people to varying degrees. The idea that we are the most advanced civilization to walk this Earth will be a laughable in 50 years. The matrix is dissolving, and if you live long enough, you will get to see it happen too.

@Melesniannon What one might call magic, another would call 100 years of rapid technological advancement. What do you think those people on Sentinel Island think about planes? That's our egos blinding us.

Ya know, they “everyone is allowed to have their own opinion” arguement is thrown around in the wrong way a lot. An opinion is a feeling or a preference. Ie, “I didn’t enmjoy that movie.” “I really like that song.” “I feel sad when this thing happens.” (That last one is even verging on “fact”) When someone is presenting something in a definite manor, it is no longer an opinion. It is being presented as a fact. Facts should be scrutinized, and proven wrong if they are in fact wrong, because that is how we strengthen actual truth/gain knowledge.

We often hides from opposing opinions, and increasingly hide from opinions that challenge even the margins of our beliefs. We hide from the sun in drywall enclosures and live in concrete jungles breathing pollutants, far away from the dirt and forests that bolster our immune system. It's kind of sad really. People believe crazy shit like this for so many illogical reasons, until someone comes along and smacks them around with the scientific method so hard they disappear into obscurity, and a lot of the misinformation out there could cost people their health and even their lives.

Yo! It would still be interesting to hear about the benefits of fasting though. When he talks about the body eating bad cells he certainly refers to the process of "autophagy", which does have some scientific backing. Also, I thought that the body does get some sort of water supply when it burns fat, no? All chemical elements of water are in bodyfat as well and intuitively it makes sense that the body has such a function. I am no expert at all, but I would appreciate a more nuanced video from you about the benefits of fasting.

I actually experienced a deep sense of spiritual calm and connection which I’ve never sensed before on my third day of water fasting. I get that this is supposed to be comedy, but for a scientist you’re very quick to judge.

The old paradigm is strong. It will be dissolved in time though. People can't explain their own consciousness which they use to make all their scientific observations, yet we deny the idea that we might be missing something.

Nah, there's stuff we don't know about the brain yet. This guy is actually into something. Our pineal gland has some incredible abilities. Look up Tony Wright.. he has a theory that I expect will be the consensus in 50 years. Our left brains are dominant because of degeneration due to our poor diets. Sleep deprivation also does some very weird things.

Christ fasted in the desert for 40 days. There’s a definite spiritual benefit from prolonged fasting. I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water on this one.

@@thebodychange666 surely when you have created your username, the idea must’ve come from somewhere? Which is quite ironic because when Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11) he was tempted by a certain “something” that denies his identity as the Son of God, exactly like you do.
