The rituals are always _botched_ rituals, too. Sure, most of them require human sacrifice, but they tend to (supposedly) be in service of preventing a larger disaster. The ghosts tend to become a problem because one time, something goes wrong. Japan in the Fatal Frame series seems like a hellish place, in that context. Communities constantly under threat by supernatural forces, and having to perform grisly rites to appease them. But if the rituals ever fail, everyone dies and leaves the area a _literal_ ghost town.

@@RomnilWater Why wasn't the official ritual working to cure the blooming?
@RomnilWater5 жыл бұрын
@@DGneoseeker1 it's been awhile since I've played/ looked into the game so let's see if I can remember this. The public ritual was basically a tourist trap, yes it was a ritual honor those who died but it brought a lot of people to the island. The secret ritual underground was actually the original, non tourist, version of the ritual. I believe the point of the ritual was to allow a priestess to commune with the Dead. The only way to do that was to be both living and dead at the same time and that was the point of the ritual to temporarily cause that to happen (instead of closing a Hell Gate for once). The doctors found out the purpose of the original ritual and they thought this state between living and dead might cure the disease and decided to try it on Sakuya to cure her. The problem was no one had done the original version of the ritual in hundreds of years so they weren't really sure what they were supposed to do and messed it up and inadvertently caused Sakuya to bloom (which only happens after someone's died) while still being able to move and spread the disease to everyone. I know I'm missing some of the finer points but this is the general idea.

@kierax0015 жыл бұрын
spoiler warning fix! . . . . . . So, first off, all five girls did survive the failed ritual, only to later bloom and die off the island. Secondly: the ritual failed because Sakuya herself was almost bloomed and the mask she wore was made wrong, with fractured knowledge of how to make it. The one to do the dance should have been strong of mind, but Sakuya wasn't, as she had already lost half of herself in her sickness. Thirdly; the disease they suffer from is not necessarily "paranormal". It has to do with the island being intricately connected on a spiritual level, and each person having their own inner song. These inner songs linger after death, and the ritual was meant to cleanse the island of the lingering inner songs so that they don't mix with the living's. The disease is when people with weaker 'inner songs' are flooded with the lingering songs of the dead, confusing them and having them loose what makes them who they are. Blooming occurs when another person's inner song, be they alive or dead, takes over someone elses. That person has completely lost who they are, and has become a mass of confusion, which bursts out in blooming. These details were sort of scattered around, but like all fatal frame games, you have to put everything together, and some things were lost in translation.
@crossxfuse5 жыл бұрын
I just finished the game today and read all the books but I didn't realize it was other people's inner songs that caused the blooming to occur. 19:11 apparently the reason the underground one failed was because they got the wrong girl for the dancing ritual, and the failure of the secret one had a knock on effect to the other.
@i308174 ай бұрын
Multiple reasons are implied. Tourist ritual: "impure" or non psychic handmaidens, well meaning but possibly unfit nurse leading the ritual, the implication that the mask was completely unfit and the real one was with Sakaya since Ruka's father could only build one, not sure if the music was missing since it's not clear if the only person with that information (Ruka's mother) was playing or if the father was even aware considering what happened in the underground ritual. The underground ritual had the missing music and apparently also made the mistake of having the dance leader already being affected by the disease, which progressed her to the blooming stage, which screwed everything up, including breaking the mask, and it's implied that the handmaidens were already affected too so the doctor appears to have actually saved them with the music therapy after the failed ritual since one of the notes mentions that the way people progress to the blooming stage is to see a person in blooming...
@i308174 ай бұрын
I'm actually surprised this game went with the less obvious "death from attrition" for the 2 girls that die in the intro after they all understandably leave the island. It would be a slam dunk to have some of them stay in the hospice as a ghost from blooming, in the years before Sakaya rose up and killed everyone. It's likely that Ruka was the last alive because she was the only one that actually forgot less easily (since the disease is a metaphor for Alzheimer) since she actually played (not well) the lunar melody as a child (from her mother), not just heard the (implied) cobbled together version from the mental hospital.

Good review as always! A few corrections tho about the story: everyone of the first public Kagura died of a heart attack, but everyone of the second secret and correct one survived. The five girls all lost their memories, and Marie and Tomoe (the girls who died) died later on after leaving the island. You're right it's not completely stated why the correct ritual failed, but it was probably because Sakuya (main boss and the dancer of the correct Kagura) wasn't mentally stable. The public Kagura was only a stage show, it didn't do anything. But the secret Kagura was the correct version and thus was supposed to guide the souls of the dead to the afterlife. Because of all the souls beinhg trapped on the island for so long is why every patient developed Getsuuyu Syndrome.

The patient will forget all memories, and their face will look like sand in water or ’bloom’ like a flower. The person will start walking around, making people who see them bloom on the spot, all while walking towards the place closest to the moon. The person is basically dead, but they still walk around like a living person; also the blooming person can survive without food or water, as shown by Sakuya surviving a two year coma without anything. The only way to stop them is by playing the Lunar Melody, as mentioned at the end of the story summary. Hope that explained it, ask if I shall explain anything else!

Fatal Frame 4 story is one of my favourite on par with Fatal Frame 2. I love the modern setting and the hospital atmosphere in game like this. The doll room in this game really creep me out. This time I like all 3 playable characters. I like this game ending the best among all canon endings in this series. Other thing that make me love this game is the characters voiced by my favourite voice actors.

Now all we need is a Fatal Frame + Luigi's mansion crossover game. (One that is canon to both franchises)

Man I want this series to continue forever. With how VR is becoming a bigger focus, I'm very hopeful for a sequel or at least a remake of the first one to come on consoles with VR.

I laughed so hard over the Vsauce joke.^^ The description of the gameplay pretty much sounds like Killer7 with all the handholding and pretty much on rails leading. And since Suda doesn't like horror games I think that's why the scares are so lame. It's all about storytelling and here Suda usually doesn't disappoint.

Still pissed that this never got an American release. Although I guess I should be lucky that it didn't end up like Fatal Frame 5...

But at least we get to play it through the english fan patch. While Fatal Frame 5 on the other hand is almost impossible to find nowadays lol
@TrueNoirChloeMoko4 жыл бұрын
@@xcheriia only thing really hard to find for 5 is trying to get ahold of a WiiU with enough space to play the game, especially in America when it is digital only and hasn't been brought to the Switch, which I would pay to incorporate it into it, like say even a small doggle, attachment, or something to put into the Switch that connects to the tv and it acts like the Gyropad from the WiiU where you can use the Switch to look around like a camera while the game still shows up on the tv. The Switch has some form of gyrocontrols as in Fire Emblem 3 Houses on the portable mode for the Switch and not the tv, you can tilt the Switch left and right and the little 8-bit version of your avatar runs along the bottom during all loading screens in the game. (Don't shoot me because I only have Fire Emblem 3 Houses to play on the Switch and not really anything else because I haven't been able to get anymore games before what is going on now and I keep having bills to pay, which even lessens any other chance I can buy games with. 3X)
@xcheriia4 жыл бұрын
@@TrueNoirChloeMoko I'm from Europe and I can't even find an affordable WiiU. I'm not going to pay 300€ for a console that I'm only going to use for one game lol. Aside from that I wish they would port the Fatal Frame series to the switch, I don't see why they couldn't... The motion sensor in the switch could very well work with Fatal Frame 5

I think part of why the 1970 secret ritual failed had to do with the Haibara family being a little bit too "close" with one another. Like the whole thing was tainted. Ayako isn't the way she is without reason. But also that the ancient ritual hadn't been done in so long that the tradition of the mask maker and the song were not passed down after the first day without suffering. Haibara stupidly used the camera obscura to look in to the past to learn how to do the secret ritual and how to design the mask, along with getting the partial sheet music for the Tsukimori song. The mask Souya made broke even though he made it correctly, possibly because of his mental state by the time he was done making it, and Haibara perverted the Tsukimori song in the way he tried to use it on the patients even though parts of it were missing.

Still surprised Suda51 directed a Fatal Frame game. The series has similarities to Suda’s work, but his tend to descend into more heavy surrealism while also touching on complex themes at points. The Silver Case is by far his most thematically deep game, as it touches on the end of the millennium and the rise of the digital age. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a intriguing narrative and want to see Suda’s earlier career given it was his first game with Grasshopper Manufacture.

I would like to mention that for those that don't have access to the original Wii for homebrew purposes, you can instead emulate the game and its English patch via Dolphin, provided you have a decent PC or laptop to do so. I have no idea if you can hack the Wii U to be able to do the same, however.

I really appreciate the silent hill enemy examples, what with assessing the enemy vs immediate interaction. That's something I've noticed about horror games but never quite put my finger on until Nitro pointed it out.

As I watch your Fatal Frame entries, I'm learning that the employed main camera angle of your player and taking advantage of the environment limitations they are placed in is one of the important recipes in scaring the player. Taking advantage of your console's hardware and software is important too! (...tho tbh theres not much I can think of for modern PCs /laughs) Making the player reach the emotion of "scared" is a science because you have to consistently balance them staying on the "tensed" threshold and make them slide off the tension for breathing room. Welp time to study more horror games!

Funny thing: i played fatal frame 4 atleast 5 times to completion and i NEVER had to rebattle the last ghost due to me messing up on the piano. i didnt knew that this was a thing so.. thanks :P fatal frame 4 is, in my opinion, one of the more interessting one because mental hospital stuff is relatable in a way. i really enjoyed playing it and i always love to go back and watch other people play it and watch reviews.. just like this one. good job mate
