There was a Patrick Whillems Video about how in the 70s it was dark gritty director driven movies but in the 80s it became bombastic and simple, producer driven movies. In part due to the success of Star Wars. I think the era of producer driven movies has come to an end as we reached the logical conclusion of that with the marvel cinematic universe (where director visions are subsumed into a greater whole). We are once again looking to see who the director is before we go see a movie and if we liked their previous films chances are we are going to like this one. The other thing I noticed from the movies you highlighted is that it seems Hollywood or at least netflixwood have remembered how to make comedies again felt like there was collective writers block for comedic writers for the last decade.

For John Wick 4 - It was amazing, and then the amazing seemed to drag on too long. Every major action sequence was so nuts, too nuts, it was almost exhausting each one. I feel like if they took 40% off each sequence, that movie would have been perfect. I still really liked it, and if it means a bunch of great stunt people get great pay to make another one, Ill watch it...

I'm very much still on the Wick coaster. I would love an essay about 4. And Oppenheimer. That video essay, I am very much looking forward to. The only movie on this list I didn't see was M3gan. An underrated favorite from last year of mine was The Passenger. A tight, intense thriller/character piece that feels like it was ripped from the 70's, which is immensely appropriate given how apocalyptic it feels at times. And seeing Oppenheimer in IMAX was incredible, though it makes me hate the fact I missed my chance to see Nope in IMAX all the more

I wanted to share this because to me it's hilarious. 😂 My dad responded to the D&D movie, and I quote, "It was unwatchably bad." I had to explain to him that the behavior of the characters and the campy tone was very evocative of a genuine D&D campaign. I'm not an expert by any means, just a player for the past 5 or so years w/ a group of friends from high school. D&D is a great game, and the movie is a great introduction to that universe imo. 😁👌 I just thought it was hilarious that in spite of your comments of universal appeal, my dad defied the odds. I too felt it was a well executed movie that should have universal appeal, but ultimately I think my dad was expecting something more grounded like LOTR. I don't blame him for having a false expectation, but I'm going to remember this until the day I die because god damn, that's some funny shit right there 🤣

But I saw it YEARS ago and MAN! What a thrill ride. I couldn’t understand most of the dialogue but damn if it wasn’t one of the best monster flicks I’ve ever seen. It’s a movie that deserves so much more conversation around it.

I love long-form cinema like KotFM and Oppenheimer, but unfortunately my ageing bladder does not. I really wish we could see the return of intermissions to go with these very long films, so that they are easier and more comfortable to experience in the best setting possible - a cinema screen. (p.s. Godzilla for film of the year, but Holdovers a close close second, a shame neither made it into the video. I'd LOVE a Minus One video essay!)
