My mother was proud to be part of the Jungpioniere (Young Pioneers) and was severely disappointed when she didnt get her red handkerchief and couldnt join the FDJ because of the GDR collapsed too fast. Edit: This doesnt mean she liked the government just to clear that up. Being part of the FDJ was simply an unwritten prerequisite for getting an good job later on.

If you're an East German who was born in 1900 and made it to 2000, then you saw so many "this is totally the one true political answer" paradigm shifts in your lifetime. It started with the Kaiserreich, where monarchy was cool and democracy was lame, then went to the Weimar Republic, where democracy was cool and monarchy was lame; then the Nazis, where communism was an evil specter, then to communism, where the former political doctrine was the truest evil. Then suddenly communism is no longer cool and it's all about democracy again. And all the time, you had to mentally capitulate and truly believe in your heart that whatever the current party line was was the one true thing, otherwise risk being a thought criminal. Yet somehow Germans think that they are free and that the present censorship is legit because mirabile dictu, the country finally, this time around, really did hit on the ONE TRUE THING.

Exactly. My grand father who went in school in the 40s/50s when France went through 3 differents regimes (Conservative leaned Republic, Fascist regime, Communist leaned Republic), everytime he returned to school to learn how the previous regime and the previous stuff he was taught were wrong, always told me that, in the end, there is no way to be sure who are the good guys. So the best is not to listen too much to your government narrative, and more follow your brain/heart.

The difference is that back then we had no choice but to act as if we were supporting the government. These days you can be sure about how many actually support it. And if there isn't enough support the government changes. That is the difference.

Why do the band refer to the Warsaw Pact as "Warsawapacht" rather than "Warschauer Pakt"? Surely "Pacht" means a lease of a building rather than a pact, and "Warsawa" looks like a misspelling of the Polish name for the city (Warszawa) which in German would be Warschau.

Something tells me this particular upload won't be regarded as "controversial", hateful or racist. A song praising a criminal oppressive regime that spied on every citizen can be tolerated by KZbin censors. However a song praising the Kaiser, a thousand year old battle, or a soldier longing for her girlfriend in a blooming meadow, well, that cannot be tolerated and should be erased from memory for ever!

Well while I don’t blame you for you views upon the existing discrimination against German culture committed by KZbin, I must tell you that this song was neither written in the GDR nor it is a pure propaganda song. It was written in the late 90s by a Swedish experimental band and I think also in a satirical intention.

It’s so hard to tell whether or not this song is satire, so many of the lines are just incredibly funny but also people genuinely believe in that sometimes

I think it's not meant as a mockery but also not completly serious. The artists are probably atleast sympatisers of socialism/communism
