I keep forgetting how poorly soils drain in various parts of Texas. I lived outside of College Station: clay soils kept the water above ground. I lived on a slope. My grandchildren's home looked like a shallow pool, just like your photo shows.

This is the reason I'd really rather use a hammock. If you're campsite turns into a 1" deep puddle 10 feet in diameter, at least you're not laying in it when you wake up.

If next year, the Texas Winter Hang looks cold and rainy consider a trip to Brooksville, FL and join us at Hangcon. We would love to have you teach a class about the history of hiking/camping.

To be honest, I haven't been to a hang in quite a while. The power company that owned the lake and leased the land to Fairfield State Park closed the plant (it was coal powered), terminated the lease, and sold the land. But you've made an excellent suggestion, I could kill two birds with one stone. When is it?

In the meantime, you can fill your Kelty pack with a trash bag full of wet clothes, and go for a walk around the area, so you can get stronger legs, learn your limit, or whatever. We used to do this with bricks wrapped in old blankets before going to the Rockies.

I've used 1/2 gallon bottles of water. Fits well in an external frame pack bag, you know the weight of each, and you can use it to keep hydrated or for hurricane prep. Thanks for watching!

👍 Really nice looking kayak. Looking forward to the video on your new tent. Totally understand postponing your trip, no one likes camping in a large puddle, especially with the creatures who swim around in those puddles. Take care.

As soon as I'm able, I'm setting out. I might have to shoot the video first weekend in March on a camping trip with my grandchildren though.

@@ROE1300 Well, we're actually going to be doing big steel and nylon tents, but I'm arriving a day early to claim the campsite and will have a bit of time to set things up.

Crazy like a fox, that's whar. Since we two-leggers first started rooting around, we figured out the importance of shelter. Our dwellings have gotten way bigger in order to protect and organize our accumulating stuff. BUT, we still incorporate bedrooms into our builds. The lessons passed down are still followed to this day. Rain is going to happen, like it or not. It might happen while we're out. Only a lunatic would wantonly put themselves in that situation. That's one reason we have houses. You'll get no grief from me for not going camping in the rain. Even Cousin Herbert Lopithecus knew better.

I would normally camp in a hammock in this weather. If your campsite turns into a 1" deep 10 foot diameter puddle overnight, at least you don't wake up laying in it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching and the advice! But to be honest, its a bit too much for me to handle by myself and I'm likely going to sell it on Facebook Market place.

I understand that sound too when I got a canoe ... ha ha . For several years I lived on the West bank of the Brazos and fished and canoed it , watch out for those bad currents and logs after a rain. I preferred the San Bernard there was better crappie fishing.

To tell the truth, I'm going to put it on FB Market Place for $50 and see what happens.

Hey Sarge , in your various trekking into the dusty and cobwebbed world of classic camping, have you come across pack baskets much ? I know they were/are and pert near have always been in use in the Pacific Northwest and further North. But what about in the rest of the country ?
@sargevining
@sargevining 5 ай бұрын
They are "officially" called Adirondack packs and until the first decades of the 20th Century were pretty much relegated to the Northeast US and bordering Candian provinces. For some reason, yah, you see them in the northern tier of States, probably because of the Canadian Voyageur influence. They have a good deal of utility in canoe trekking where portages are required, but are kind of uncomfortable for longer distances, which kind of explains why we don't see them too much further south.

We had tall banks along the Brazos River near where we lived. No wonder your daughter would be screaming.

Yah, normally there's a 40 foot drop on my side of the river, although the rains have made that a bit less. She can rest assured, though. My plan is to put it on Facebook Market place.
